Our state has still never let go of this team. You see people wearing whalers jerseys to sporting events, concerts, or just random bars. We even used the same color palette for our minor league baseball team the Hartford Yard Goats.

It never helped that the Whalers were set in the middle of 2 original 6 teams that had long since staked their claims to the Ct. fan base, Rangers on the western side of the state and Boston to the eastern side of the state. Being a Boston fan, I went to a few games in Hartford where there would be more Bruins fans in attendance than Hartford fans. They did have some great players though.

On April 13, 2026, a Hartford-based group headed by Ray Dalio and Todd Boehly will purchase the Ottawa Senators from Michael Andlauer for $1.68 billion, including a relocation fee of $195 million to relocate the Senators to Hartford, if a deal between the Senators and the National Capital Commission to build a proposed hockey-specific venue in the LeBreton Flats district falls apart, Canadian Tire Centre's capacity plummets to 11,084 fans, and the ticket sales start to decline. On April 16, 2026, the NHL Board of Governors will approve both the sale and relocation of the Senators to Hartford in a unanimous vote, so after 33 years in Ottawa (excluding the 2004-05 NHL season which was canceled because of the lockout), the Senators will relocate to Hartford to become the 2nd incarnation of the Hartford Whalers and use the XL Center as their temporary home for the next 2 years until the new $1.2 billion 20,000-seat multi-purpose riverfront venue on the Connecticut Convention Center site is constructed, built, and open for the 2028-29 NHL season.
