Still holds up today. You might consider it the first "HD"-capable console since you can hook it up via a vga-adapter.

Antony ARey agreed. If that hadn't happened they probably would have gotten more 3rd party support, which means they would have gotten Madden, which actually would have made a big difference

If they hadn't released the Saturn early and actually LOCALIZE THE GOOD SATURN GAMES, it wouldn't have failed.

Saturn being very hard to program for as well was a dealbreaker when it was underperforming. But you can go back further in the "should have" machine to when Sega turned down Sony for a new CD option.

I understand that. 32 shouldn’t had been a thing, but Sega Saturn is not a mistake.

I totally agree. I cannot think of more than a handful of PS2 games that I actually liked, and they're usually games that was available on other consoles. Dreamcast was the first console Sega produced that felt to me like a quality product. If Saturn would have had dreamcast's release strategy, Sega would still be a powerhouse hardware company IMO.

DC is better than ps2 for the engine. Ps2 has more power for the graphic. While DC still in the cd format (but much much more powerful framing and everything than other similar console like PS1, N64 or gamecube..) , PS2 was already with a DVD format. And it produced a better sprites for graphic. The sad thing is, the majority of people will always choose graphic over gameplay. This made PS2 won.

@Dawn Wings Lunaleon depends on the person. I played my ps2 even when the ps3 released. I rarely touched my dreamcast. With games like mgs and jrpgs

+Lord Cthulhu Yes, I do...Your initial assumptions were incorrect as I bought Final Fantasy three _(FF6)_ when it first came out for $89, and Fantasy Star 4 for $100, because back in those days, pickings were slim for RPGs which is why I didn't care too much for the glut that was being released for the Dreamcast... _(BTW, My first game system was Magnavox Oddessy II...But I was too busy playing outside to get into it...)_ As the domestic releases of sports and shovelware sucked in comparison to the Japanese titles that never made it over here, we were stuck with utter shit, unless you like cookie-cutter platformers and sports titles, and if so, then you're absolutely correct, Dreamcast was a great system... For a little while...Now compare that to the overwhelming success of Playstation *_(ONE)_* And no, it wasn't because of hype, it was because of the availability of software domestic and abroad, coupled with much better third party developer support and unlike Sega and Nintendo, it wasn't *_as closed_* a development environment for third-party developers. As far as anything beyond the Playstation two's second wave of titles, I wouldn't know too much by personal experience as I had already gravitated to the PC for my gaming bliss...And that's a whole other can-of-worms in and of itself! ;^)

Well, you can always buy one off of Amazon. But i do share your sentiments. I've sold mines months ago, I was in a financial strut. but I regret that badly. that's why I'm getting it back.

I remember wanting one so bad as a kid but my dad was a 'PC or console, not both' kinda guy so... when I got one a decade later for 20 quid I loved it, shame at the time there was no community for it! Games too hard to get hold of..

I never had it, but my friend had. I was so envious, it had insanely good titles. Shenmue, all those rpg's i loved... you name it. Thumbs up, one of the best consoles ever for sure.

Actually, the original Xbox is a continuation of the Dreamcast. The original Xbox launched with an ethernet cable, had DLC and online multiplayer, a hard drive where all saves were saved and had the same thumbstick on the top part of the left-hand side of the controller just like the Dreamcast. In a way, the original Xbox continued what the Dreamcast wanted to do. Xbox Live was launched in 2002.

That and I think pirating killed it. Way too easy to pirate games.

imo, its not about lack of DVD player, it's lack of third party games..(people found so many better games on the ps2)

to me three things killed it. lack of dvd. lack of third support from other game companies, and sega being cheap, not making high quality games besides shenmue, mostly importing their arcade games into console. which not all bad.

You are correct in saying that Sony and MC aren't gaming focused. But they are also not the only ones making games for there respective consoles. Have you played the recent watched and clank games? Those have always been full of charm. The new Spider-Man game is looking pretty good.

With better technology coming out means that games kinda HAVE to use those graphics. You don't want to be playing a game with ps2 graphics in 2017. I feel gaming has become less honest, more for casuals than the people who care.

hahaha the PS1 success was founded by developing GAMES. Man, even if you weren`t alive back then you have so much access to info thanks to the internet and yet so much ignorance. the PS2`s early success, granted, it was the DVD. PS4 is full of great games, you just aren`t looking at the right direction OR you are getting too old for gaming, I mean, Yakuza series, gravity rush, ni oh, last guardian, persona 5, horizon, nier automata, bloodborne, I mean, no magic?

Kitty McRatSlayer Sega and nintendo were true gaming. You paid full price for a game, and got a complete product. Now they release 1/2 finished, bug-filled games, charge u full price (or more), then nickel-n-dime u for items and features that should already be in there. That's why i only stick with pre-dreamcast era of gaming. Fuck Sony and microsoft

With Wii U, Nintendo lost all respect i once had towards it. I hope they fix things with the Nintendo Switch. 3rd party developers, game titles, those old game titles like Metroid, ( zelda is coming ofc ) etc... Better UI for end users, multimedia / streaming capabilities. Good multiplayer support in game titles. All the things that really matter in todays gaming because all companies have great titles anyway, nintendo can't just reinvent the wheel so much that it's games would be far superior, they're not.

it wasn't just Sony. It was EA leaving them, relative lack of third party support, releasing the Sega Saturn 4 months early, and the fact it didn't have the ability to play DVDs. Also, +Puny Poppy, who plays Nintendo consoles for third party games? Not to mention whenever Nintendo tries some current technology, it fails (case in point: the Famicom Disk system)
