COVID-19 has deepened our nation's hunger crisis. Since the pandemic started, as many as 7 million people have enrolled in the federal government's food stamp program, and many are relying on food banks for the first time to feed their families. Correspondent Lee Cowan visits San Antonio, Texas, to find out how charitable organizations there are stepping up to feed the demand.

That's a lie. I live in San Diego. We are doing pretty good as a county. But Harris County (Houston) is suffering. Minute Made park has lines on top of lines of people begging for food. I know this because my Brother drives over the interstate next to it on his commute after work and video messages me on WhatsApp the struggle. You just don't know because you don't live in an affected area. Same with Baltimore, Maryland. In Baltimore people are struggling. And in Newark, New Jersey.

Ander is 100% correct. Even in natural disasters, our government gives so much aid. Our shelters are overflowing with donations and there is a church on most every corner willing to help. It would be very difficult for an adult to go hungry in America. These commenters think going without a cell phone, cable TV, and internet means poor.

Most of my family and friends who I give Christmas presents to really don't need more stuff. They are all doing OK and have what they need to get through this pandemic without much disruption to their lives. This year they are all getting a donation to their local food bank in their name from me. I think if we have enough money for gifts then we have enough to help our fellow Americans regardless of party or anything else. Many of our countrymen are hurting and their welfare is more important than some trinket or toy. Suggest you do the same. Tell your friends too.

I was very grateful for what I got but it’s just not enough to feed a family of four. And our job said today that we’re off till August. And our state quit giving unemployment so the food banks the only place I have to get food. So bless you.😇🎄p.s I am in the state of Indian,

And every time I got a bargain on chicken I cooked it up, made bone broth, chopped and froze the chicken into easy to use packets in the freezer, and pressure canned the broth. Exactly Dan! We've become a nation of professional victims. Food insecurity in a country experiencing the "Great Resignation" simply because they don't like their jobs? Help wanted signs up everywhere, employers in many areas of the country offering starting wages of $15 to $20 an hour for entry level jobs, but people won't move to where the jobs are and then claim they can't afford to eat? What a joke! I'm just not buying it! The beans and rice thing is both a metaphor for survival during hard times and literally true! Big bags of pinto beans or lentils are less than $1 a pound and full of protein vitamins and minerals. A 20lb. bag of white rice at my local Walmart is currently only $9. You and I both know the incredible amount and variety of fresh vegetables you can produce in a tiny 8' x 10' garden space with minimal effort. And it's a fun family activity too! The maximum SNAP benefit is $204 for one person, and $680 a month for a family of 4. I spend less than that on food! LOL! Ever notice that most of the people suffering from "food insecurity" are morbidly obese and drive luxury cars to pick up their free food from the food bank, while also receiving SNAP benefits and a premium tax credit that pays for their health insurance that treats their type 2 diabetes caused by lack of exercise and obesity. Give me a break! Yep! You hit the nail on the head! The same people that laugh at me for having an entire shelf full of beans and rice, are the same ones going to the food bank! Folks definitely need some "adulting".

People with back yards or no yards can start to grow some edible plants and edible mushrooms. Edible fungi that grows from woods and plants are better than the button mushrooms that grows on compost. No manure about it! That's something that can be taught at elementary schools to grow an ORGANIC community garden at elementary schools. Instead of a grass lawn, a edible ORGANIC plant garden and edible fungi that grows on woods or plants. People forgotten how to grow plants especially organically. No RoundUP as the main ingredient is toxic and causes cancers. RoundUp is a weed killer. Instead of trees with no fruits, plant more apple trees, orange trees, lemon trees, etc. Date palm trees. We are too reliant on a few large farms that specializes on one plant or farm animal. We need local farmers. Small farms. More mom and pop organic farms. More back yard edible organic plants. Maybe more incentive rebates from water and power utilities to grow edible organic plants instead of grass lawns, etc. No more grass lawns!
@trainablemonkey9912
@trainablemonkey9912 3 года назад
How long does it take an apple or orange tree to grow? You need to eat every day not years from now. As for fungus and plants you need to BUY seeds and spores. Food stamps do not cover manure or fertilizer as far as I know. Human waste is illegal and unsafe. Sure it would be nice to have started growing your own food years ago while working 60 hours at the office.
@michaellee888
@michaellee888 3 года назад
60 hours at the office?! Try 70 hours or more. Try being an entrepreneur and to discover its 24/7 challenges. Try being a 24/7 caregiver. Try being on a 12 hr shift as a nurse on the frontlines. Try being in Afghanistan. Last I heard welfare doesn't pay people to invest. A fruit tree would need to start at some point to develop and to bear fruit. Last I heard food stamps doesn't cover all food expenses. Most SNAP (food stamps) is about $194 total in one month for a single person. Depending on what that person buys that can either go quickly or covers all grocery expenses. I don't remember discussing human waste specifically. But no government agency will audit anyone's farming when that farming is ONLY for their own consumption. I don't remember talking about being a farmer and selling the crops to the public. Waste and how it is used is largely dependent on localities. For example, a plastic surgeon was recycling the fat waste from all the liposuction surgeries that were performed by that surgeon. The surgeon was using the fat to convert to bio-fuel for vehicle use. Unfortunately, some people discovered that and were completely disgusted about that and a local ordinance was created to make that illegal. Had the surgeon use his own fat to use on his own vehicles then government would NOT be able to intervene. The issue was that the surgeon was using fat harvested from the public. I would imagine it would be illegal to go and scavenge for waste for fertilizing use. In India, it's illegal to go scavenge for waste to use as fertilizer. Local laws and customs are many and that deserves its own RU-vid video. It's safe to generalize that using your own resources for your own use on your own property would generally avoid government audits. Many people totally living off grid and being self-sustaining use a compost toilet. They often do use that compost for their gardens. Look up any tiny home community. Last I heard there are plants that grow both indoors and outdoors. Many use an "AeroGarden." Yes, it's a thing and yes you can google AeroGarden. People grow indoor herbs, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. AeroGarden prices range from $69 to $476. As of today, Sunday, 12/13/2020, the $69 sprout kit from AeroGarden is SOLD OUT from the AeroGarden website. Would you look at that?! I wonder why?! Spices and herbs at the local grocery stores can be pricey. For example, buying every bottle on the spice racks will NOT be cheap. It can be $200 or more. So, $69 is being more frugal. Obviously not the $0.99 cents onion or garlic powder at the 99 cents stores. Notice all the groceries at the 99 cents stores are usually NOT organic. I WOULD imagine that if everyone learn some basics to gardening starting as early as kindergarten or earlier that most people wouldn't have to buy a kit. For example, many items at the grocery store already have seeds and spores to use. Shiitake and all other fungi do have spores on its fruiting bodies. Potatoes, onions and other root edible plants can still grow. Seeds from fruits can be used. I would recommend buying the organic foods to harvest its seeds and spores. But seriously there are some skills to farming. That can be learned. For example, putting a banana peel when planting a new tree. No manure about it. "But skepticism about biosolids comes from more than just our hesitance to talk about our poop - some organizations, like the Sierra Club, worry that using human excrement as fertilizer is significantly riskier than using animal manure. Almost 50 percent of biosolids created in the United States are applied to land, with the majority being used in agriculture. Are we endangering our health by putting human poop on our farms?" You can read more about it on the Modern Farmer. See link below. modernfarmer.com/2014/07/stink-human-poop-fertilizer/

The government should be doing what it did during the World War decades and do outreach to show people how to manage their food shopping, food storage, and menu planning to handle adversity. I thought this should have been started immediately in February of 2020 to get ahead of the problem. Of course, personal responsibility should have kicked in by now. The empty shelves in March and April apparently weren't enough of a wake up call. I've maintained a several year pantry of food for decades, many decades. This was done by relying on staple foods that were abundant and inexpensive at the time, so I never participated in any panic buying. It also relies on my own industry and thrift to can excess produce, dehydrate vegetables and mushrooms, and grow as much as I can in any given year--even indoors. No special equipment required to be thrifty. Just old-fashioned menus and cooking skills.

stephanie medina, I agree that there is a problem with priorities when people have cars and can't afford food. I understand that mass transit isn't great in many cities but I see expensive cars lined up at food banks. My neighbor had an old truck that needed work. He couldn't pay his bills but got a new truck from a dealership on payments. He was evicted shortly afterwards for failure to pay his rent and I often wonder how long it was before his new truck was repossessed. Easy loans come with a hefty price tag. Blessings to you!

You probably are frugal in many other ways, too. People have forgotten that they really have a hard choice to make--new vehicle and high payments or a vehicle they can afford now and peace of mind. A six-pack of pepsi or bags of rice and beans for the pandemic pantry. A bag of potato chips or a couple of $1 spices that will last for a month of frugal home cooking to make rice and beans into tasty meals. When I see my huge jar of shelf-stable peanut butter in the pantry next to a huge box of macaroni I start thinking of what I need to make an Asian-style peanut sauce from that peanut butter to go into a pasta stir-fry sauce. A little vinegar, a little sugar, a little salt, a bit more garlic, a saved packet of soy sauce, and a sprinkle of ginger powder and it comes together very nicely. Umami!

Watching this video, I am struck by the vastly varying meaning of 'insecurity' in different countries. In my country, owning a vehicle is a sign of affluence, even if it taken with a loan. Some of the vehicles in the queue I saw in the video are affordable only to the upper-class in my country. In the video, I see hundreds of vehicles lining up with occupants waiting for food handouts. Whereas in my country, many could never afford a car but have reasonably reliable access to food, even though we import nearly all food from outside. I think the issue here is last-mile access to food supplies for the common people though in US, not lack of food.
@coreenaburke5775

In America things are farther away you have to have a vehicle to get to your job, to get to school or to the store. It is very different than other countries. The town I grew up in was small but used to have a store in nearly every neighborhood within walking distance. Each with a Butcher and bakery. Now there is one or two grocery stores several miles across town usually Walmart in the next town 40 minutes there and back. No public transportation maybe a taxi cab wich is very expensive.

@@Chamelionroses What are your struggles with food? Are you able to cook at home? Have a refrigerator, pots, pans, etcetera? Can you shop at a dollar store or stores with even better prices? Do you know how to cook from scratch or are willing to learn? I like to go on the internet and type in a few ingredients to search for interesting recipes to use up what I have. Because of that I've learned how to make a delicious hummus from a dreaded can of peas (I hates them!) that were gifted to us, that I served over some stale saltines that I rebaked in the toaster oven to make them tasty, and boiled some carrots (cheapest vegetable ever!) to serve with that. It made a nutritious and tasty lunch until I could start a big pot of bean chili to have for dinner. Then the bean chili lasted for days and days of tasty meals. We froze half of that so we wouldn't get bored. The bean chili was made for well under $5 from "dollar store" staples that works out to about 25 cents a meal, per person. I love to pick up a 2 pound bag of dried pinto beans and a 2 pound bag of white rice for $1 when then have that at our local Dollar Tree. The tomato sauce is cheaper at Walmart but the concept is still workable. Olive oil, minced garlic, chili powder, tomato sauce, and pre-cooked pinto beans can be simmered for a few hours then served over white rice. A homemade masa flour tortilla and refried pinto beans makes a nice wrap that can include shredded carrots and cabbage (another bargain vegetable) rounds out another cheap, nutritious meal. Unfortunately, Dollar Tree doesn't carry carrots, cabbage, celery, or onion, else it would be a food paradise instead of a food desert store. They do have canned sauerkraut.... I still fondly remember my starving student days when I put myself through college. Instead of ramen noodles, which were too expensive for me, I'd make rice soup or rice bowls with onion, carrot, celery, and cabbage, and chickpeas. If I wanted pizza I'd make it myself on a tortilla.That's when I learned to love tofu and canned salmon, which were cheap back then. I'm sure I ate a more varied diet, but that was an illustration of a nutritious, cheap, staple meal and a fun meal. My grandkids still love a tortilla pizza and they are about ready for college themselves.

Yes, more needs to be done. However, there is an expectation that manufactured faux food products will always be available and people often feel entitled to that illusion of abundance. Yet, our family eats very, very well on about $1 a day per person, without the necessity for buying any manufactured faux food products. And nearly everything on our menu can be created from "dollar store" items, to illustrate that even a food desert can yield inexpensive, nutritious foods to feed any size family. I could easily spend more money but refuse to do so out of a sense of responsibility. I suppose you could say this is now a money-saving hobby that yields an abundance of food security for our family. A concept borne out of the lessons of the past, most recently The Great Depression and Dust Bowl era survived by my grandparents. I listened to the lessons well. Because I know for a fact that it can be done I urge anyone facing food insecurity to examine their own habits. Are you willing to make use of every bit of food that you can get, whether given or found? Are you willing to cook for yourself? Are you willing to learn how to spend less, eat better, and use any savings to build a pantry of shelf-stable foods for emergencies? Do you have rice, pasta, dried beans, lentils, canned salmon, canned tomatoes, canned vegetables, canned fruit, apple sauce, jarred minced garlic, peanut butter, nuts, regular oatmeal, powdered milk, vegetable oil, salt, spices, sugar, and vinegar on in your pantry? Does your refrigerator contain several dozen eggs, real butter, and low-cost fresh vegetables like carrots, cabbage, celery, and kale? Do you know that beans can be eaten cooked, refried, turned into hummus, made into soup, stew, chili, and even lentil spaghetti sauce? That bean burgers can be made from those same shelf-stable ingredients, and are delicious? Salmon soup can be made from the broth in a salmon can. SNAP benefits can be used to buy seeds for easy to grow vegetables like green onions, kale, spinach > in the house, year-round. If you buy celery you can regrow more from the root stalk so you can always snip off some leaves or a branch to add flavor to your recipes. You absolutely can do more with what you have. I volunteer for a local food bank and the amount of real food that is refused or left behind the dumpster is extremely disheartening to the staff because we try so hard and realize the need is so great. A number 10 can of tomato sauce doesn't intimidate me because I can make some large recipes like spaghetti sauce and chili, then freeze dinner sized portions to eat later. Cook once, eat many times! Saves time, energy, and money. A huge bag of cucumbers becomes cucumber salad, cucumber soup (both hot or cold), and a cucumber relish to go with salmon patty or bean burger. Too many apples in the commodities box? Make your own refrigerator apple sauce or chop and freeze into small containers to make a quick apple dessert later. Take these types of foods and gift them to friends and neighbors. Try to figure out how to incorporate them into your weekly menus. Right now we are eating from our pantry, not spending money on food except for the occasional bag of carrots and onions, beets on sale (eat the greens!), and any greens that are a good price. The grandkids love homemade oatmeal sweetened with apples or applesauce. Homemade pancakes can be eaten with apple sauce instead of syrup. For Christmas Day, I'll serve Salmon Loaf with a homemade teriyaki glaze, rice pilaf, and canned green beans, plus homemade chocolate chip cookies made with shelf-stable coconut oil instead of butter or margarine. I've got a few boxes of shelf-stable milk gifted to us from the unwanted contents of a commodities box that I can use in recipes. I'll use up some gifted "government cheese" and make a baked macaroni & cheese casserole, topped with homemade croutons from bread crusts I've saved in the freezer. An elderly friend gifts us the commodities box items and we, in turn, provide him meals made from the same ingredients. The broth from two cans of Aldi salmon ($2.29 each) will go into the next Salmon Soup I make. No, it's not traditional for Christmas, but every item is a proven favorite in our house and with elderly neighbors that get to enjoy a plate, too. It can be both challenging and rewarding to think outside of the box when it comes to good nutrition.

Too many of us live pay check to pay check so when that pay check shrinks or goes away all together we're faced with horrible choices. Food or medicine; medicine (or/and food) and the roof over our families heads. How many working Americans depend on their jobs for affordable healthcare? Loose that job and... Then there's the ever increasing cost of basics such as food, utilities, fuel. Half of the new cars sold in America cost almost as much as a small, 50 year old house. Compare rent: My 50 year old house mortgage is $650/mo. My coworkers are spending upwards of $800 a month to rent apartments in one of the worst neighborhoods in Des Moines. Due to restaurant closures and slow sales from Covid issues my hours last week were 25. My take home was $343, of which we paid one bill (Medicom at $148) and the rest went on groceries for my wife, myself, and our two cats. On average we spend about $200 a week at the grocery store. I can't seem to walk out of the grocery store and spend less then $150 without giving up something. Abd this is Iowa, I can't imagine what it costs in other states. I spent $4.85 for a gallon of milk as an example.

Growing your own cow? Need 1-3 acres and feed. Growing carrots? Takes a while, but you are hungry right now.

If a person is hungry now perhaps they should have purchased $100 worth of shelf-stable staple foods with their stimulus check instead of a larger tv. And maybe getting rid of cable will be the difference between paying rent or being evicted. In our household, $100 worth of shelf-stable foods can be made to last for two months of nutritious menus. If people have nice vehicles but no job learn a new trade, like home delivery services or ridesharing.

@@GeckoHiker Thank you! You are a lone voice of common sense in a wilderness of fools! Right now, an 8lb. bag of pinto beans is $6 and a 20lb. bag of white rice is only $9 at my local Walmart. A 200 count bottle of store brand vitamins is only $8. So, two 20lb. bags of white rice and two 8lb. bags of pinto beans and one bottle of vitamins would provide one person with about 3000 calories a day and all essential nutrients for one month for $38 before tax. You have to be a professional idiot to starve in America.

@@jasonjames4254 Exactly! Be sure to also include a healthy oil to help make the nutrition more effective. We pay a little bit more for Aldi coconut oil and ghee. I like to splurge on California Ranch olive oil for salad and toast. We also eat very well for no more than $1 a day per person in spite of the splurges. I wandered into Kroger to get bananas, cabbage, and Kroger butter on sale, plus I had great coupons in the mail for these items. As I walked past the meat section it made me glad I know how to cook beans and rice. Wow! $22 for a four pound roast ! Aldi is having a sale Wednesday--$4.90 for 10 lbs of chicken leg quarters. Roasted, deboned, chopped meat and a gallon of chicken stock later this will make at least 24 meals when used in soup, chicken tacos, pilaf, chicken salad, chicken patties, pulled bbq chicken sandwiches, and some stir fries and curry. Salmon is still around $2.79 a can at Aldi. We bought it at $2.29 a can and filled our pantry last year. We'll have salmon patties on the 8-pack hot dog rolls that Walmart sold for 50 cents, with homemade cole slaw, plus home made french fries from our garden.

A problem I see with many Food Banks is the food is heavily processed. It's cheap food. Heavy carbs. Lot's of bread, and often bleached, bromated white bread. Canned everything. Low grade American Cheese. These foods promote Obesity, Diabetes, and Compromised Immune Systems, in a word Disease. I celebrate the Helpers and Volunteers out there. And, we need to educate America about what nutritious food is, and is not.

I feel bad for people who don’t have enough food. That said...those are some nice vehicles. And I’m willing to bet most of these people have a new-ish iPhone, laptop, big screen tv, cable/netflix subscription, etc....the list goes on and on. Many people simply did not live within their means and prepare for a rainy day. And now they are paying the price.
