oh please Sasha, we all know that as holy musical Batman wisely put, the true steps to becoming a Batman villai are: 1- select a theme 2- think up plenty of puns about that theme 3- buy a suit in a color that suits the theme 4- find something thematic to wear on your head 5- poison Gothams water supply Obsession with Batman is indeed optional XD

Now THAT'S the Clayface look I remember! Where actually looks a mud monster who could turn into things, then once Sandman happened, they were like, "making weapons out of his hand are rad too." Can't have a Clayface not be a nar unstoppable mud dude!

I was first introduced to Clay-Face by the animated Batman series in the 90's, that's my favorite incarnation, he was filled with so much pathos!

Same here. I loved that show. It could be astoundingly mature and even dark for a cartoon. Like the episode where Batman faces a guy who forces street kids to live in the sewers and steal for him. How that show got past various parents groups is beyond me.

How many chemical baths and pools are there in Gotham? Clayface Pit, Lazarus Pit, Joker Revival Pit.... I know there like 4 more that allow the Dark knight to come out I think... They should really take care of Ace Chemicals betters.

Interestingly enough, none of the Clayfaces were used for the animated series "The Batman". They created an entirely new one from police officer Ethan Bennett. Also, I hope we get a Mud Pack video!

This version of Clayface takes from the Dick Tracy mythology: all the bad guys have a really distinctive physical feature and are named for it (Flat-Top, Pruneface, Mumbles). Bruce's rogues gallery had this with characters ranging from the Joker, Clayface, Two-Face, and Man-Bat. (Clark's rogues were relatively normal-looking by comparison; if they'd followed this trope instead, they'd be Chromedome Luthor, Greeniac, and MxyzLeprechaun.)

3:35 Neither could Catherine the Great- allegedly. Mr. Staub did a great job on the portrait. The B:TAS origin is still the best IMO but this isn't bad, considering the time frame. Also, early Clayface looks a lot like early Ben Grimm as The Thing...

I'm surprised you didn't point out the resemblance of the Clayface panels of him in the blue trunks to Silver Age Thing from The Fantastic Four first issues. BTW, Clayface is hilarious in the Harley Quinn animated series. Excellent show!

I also like your blouse with the black and white stitch work. Very nice. I like Matt better, but I do miss the tragedy you get in BTAS. I am a sucker for that kind of stuff. My introduction to the Matt Hagen CLAYFACE was his appearances on The New Adventures of Batman. Saturday morning cartoon series, Adam West and Burt Ward were voices of Batman and Robin.

My favorite Clayface of all, and not just because he was the 1st one I knew of until Who's Who). His being brought back finally, just to be a quick kill-off in the end of Crisis' run, was yet another thing that turned me off of comics for decades in the mid-80's. At least he died with good (forgotten) company, like the Bug-Eyed Bandit.

Matt Hagen was the first Clayface story I read back in 1969 80 page Batman. Mike W. Barr and Keith Griffin tweaked Hagen's origin and made him a lot goofier in Secret Origins The Mud Pack.

Silver Age Matt Haggen just makes me think he would show up on Batman Brave and the Bold cartoon. I do like the DCAU Batman TAS version mostly because of his backstory, he's voiced by Ron Perlman & he was an actor .

I'm going back and forth from being grossed out by the melting mud monster look to appreciating the interesting art style :) Looking at all the various mud monsters, I think I prefer Basil just 'cause his character had such a personality/unique design in The Batman cartoon.

Loving this Clayface series and excited for future installments! I'd have to say Preston Payne is probably my favorite Clayface...both the most tragic and the most unhinged. I'm also a huge fan of when they all get together in the Mud Pack arc. I also loved Hagen's portrayal on B:TAS, and of course Clayface on Harley Quinn is a pure delight.

Would like to see a live action batman movie with the Mud Pack. Just put all the Clayfaces together. Every superhero movie now has to have like 2 or 3 villains in them.

The clay creature that used to be an actor, and now is unable to hold a consistent character for too long, before falling apart... Is a beautiful sad monster with many visual possibilities

Gotta love it! It has no opposition torque whatsoever (like a helicopter without a tail rotor) so the pilot would be spun 'round and/or hurled away.

The Whirly Bats briefly appear close to the end of the animated movie Batman: Return of the caped crusaders. The film's based on the 60's Adam West Batman and even has West voicing Bats along with Bert Ward's reprisal of Robin and Julie Numar's reprisal of Catwoman it's fun, silly and has a pretty good sequel Batman vs Two Face with Two Face voiced by William Shatner.

Ah, Legend of the Dark Knight issue that gave 10yo me nightmares. I loved it! First Batman comic I think. Fun fact: In India it was a double sized issue rather than two parters. Back home them they came out under the Batman title. They were also bigger in dimension.

It's about time we got a live action Clayface of the same quality as the animated series version. Not in the DCEU though. They fuck up their versions of both heroes and villains. No wonder one of the few successful DC films in the last few years, Joker wasn't set in the DCEU and next year's The Batman film isn't either.
