Gangs are always looking for new ways to launder their money, and in cities like London, Birmingham and Manchester, using money mules has become one of their favorite methods.
Young and vulnerable people are convinced by criminals, often on social media, to let them use their personal bank accounts to receive and send on their illicit earnings. However, there can be serious consequences for those who get involved, from being locked out of the financial system, to even serving time in prison. This crime is still massively under-reported, which in part is what leaves many young people so vulnerable.
00:00 Intro
01:45 Meeting the money mule recruiters
06:26 Speaking with a former money mule
09:44 How international gangs launder illegal cash
VICE investigates this new and booming form of crime and meets the recruiters, the police, and people who have inadvertently got caught up in it.

My best friend at our former school (15 years old then) was dealing drugs for some pocket money in a city of Belgium (Flanders) from a big network of gangs across Europe for a year. The police caught him and send him to a Jeugdinrichting (Youth detention center) for a few months, he got released after that without any major implications. He told me he brought a PS4 and a lot of candy/food with the money he got, the police let him keep the PS4 and the little money that was left over, they also didn't leave any permanent records on him because he still didn't understand the seriousness of his actions then. Several years later we're now going to the same university (KU Leuven) and studying Computer Science.

Here in NY we call them something else and we use them differently. We call them “pieces”. A common hustle is to purchase pieces on the black market. You can easily acquire someone’s card info through the dark web which is a piece and then you use it to buy goods that you can then flip for cash on the streets. Like get a new PS5 and then sell it at a discounted price. Then after a few flips you dub the piece and buy another one and repeat the process. Ideally you’d keep your purchases under $2k with each piece. If you get too greedy and run up a piece for hella bread then that’s when you get caught

But yeah, the social media app companies should be doing much more to avoid this type of content. Or, as a possible tactic, is to just overwhelm these type of accounts. For example, there should be users creating simililar accounts which can be found under similar user names, but which would promote the opposite - there is no quick cash, it's risky and you can get into jail or have other huge problems.

In order for a person with the bank account to be charged with money laundering or any crime related to this activity wouldn't they have to know that there was criminal activity involved? Wouldn't the person with the bank account have to have intent to commit a crime in order to be charged with a crime of this type? I understand there are certain crimes where negligence plays a role but does that apply to this type of crime? Can a person who is literally duped into this or who thinks they're helping someone out who can't access their money be charged with a crime of this type? I understand some of these people know what they're doing and are willful participants but I think there can be some who have no idea that's there's criminal activity involved.
