The criticism I hear often about Airbnbs in Kenya is that finding a team of people to manage it as you are working remotely, people who are reliable and will not swindle you is near impossible. Has this been your experience?
@planB-BacktoAfrica
@planB-BacktoAfrica Год назад
Yes, definitely has been my experience. It's a challenge, but I developed a strategy to built a reliable team that I can trust. Now 4 years being a superhost in Africa speaks for itself.

Thanks for the insight and for focusing on those on the continent, it’s long overdue for us to use what we have right in front of us to the best of our ability. I wish I could sit down with you, have some coffee and pick your brain for more ideas and inspiration 😎

Yet another well thought out vlog. Fab insights and a timely reminder of what Africa has to offer instead of always yearning to leave the continent. The biggest barrier for those wanting to invest in Africa is lack of affordable capital. For those with access to capital, the opportunities are endlessa and the returns are even better compared to other places outside the content. James

For sure. But I think we also have a limited set of entrepreneurs with the requisite ingredients to capture that capital, whatever they are (including self-belief)

Im also staying at an Airbnb in Mombasa and frankly, if this goes on, the local tourism will end. Previously, we could stay in a hotel and have bed and breakfast e.t.c thanks tk economies of scale. Before covid, i came with my son and nanny. It was okay. Even adjusting for inflation, now it is not okay. The dollar prices kill, the extra airbnb rates kill, then we have to go our looking for food buying towels and all stuff. Not good. In the end, i will only stay here until thursday because my budget is taking a hit. Everything is impossible. Hate it. So, thats my perspective as a Kenyan 'enjoying' this so capitalist amd truly exploitative way of business.

Sorry you made such a bad experience, but I can not relate. In my airbnb, guests get towels, soap and are even invited to eat with us locals. We take them along to our traditional events and make sure they get to see the real authentic Africa beyond the hotelworld where they are surrounded by muzungus only. When I check into airbnbs I make sure I get what I myself offer to my guests. Maybe you should do better research next time to avoid this experience. Let me know if you need a youtube tutorial on how to book the right airbnb and avoid being scammed. I'm happy to help!

Sorry if I have misunderstood. However, it seems that you are suggesting that people without resources to get their own property can own and rent out airBnB properties, which to my knowledge is not possible. If I have missed something, happy for the clarification.

Overpriced hit the whole world economy especially the real estate industry, the consumers are struggling to go out and spend for entertainment. AIRBNB is more about an in entertainment industry.

I agree with you. I had to cut my holiday by three days even in Mombasa and with less people because the whole Airbnb thing is not sustainable. Maybe for foreigners and tourists but not for the average Kenyan. This crap sucks.

I must say I stumbled on your videos by accident but, I really like your content. It is quite inspiring for those of us in the diaspora. Regarding your advise on Airbnb, I would like to hear your advise about finding apartments or house where landlords are willing to allow me to sub-let the unit. Most leases that I am familiar with categorically forbid sub-letting. Also, I would like to know if Airbnb website allows you to list sub-let units that you don’t own. Thank you and looking forward to hear your comments.
@planB-BacktoAfrica
@planB-BacktoAfrica Год назад
Hi, thanks for watching! Sub-letting is no issue for majority of the landlords. I advise you to include them in your business as your property manager, which makes a lot of sense when you are not on the ground. So try to create a win win situation and you will get their full approval. About airbnb, it's not their concern if you actually own the property you are renting out via airbnb. The system of rental arbitrage is used by many hosts on the platform. Hope this information helps.

Truly beautiful and cultured lady with brains. Thank you for the TIP - I will look into BNB. Which is better? BNB or renting a house long term? BNB seems to offer much more freedom.
@planB-BacktoAfrica
@planB-BacktoAfrica Год назад
First of all, thanks for watching. While short-term rental on airbnb is more profitable, I personally prefer long-term rental agreements because they are less stressful, and you get to know more interesting people from around the world with whom you can connect and learn from. When doing airbnb, I believe we shouldn't be guided by the money only but the other benefits it brings.

On one hand you have the capitalism mindset of pursuing monetary gains whenever possible - on the other hand you have the harsh truth that when AirBnb starts getting popular in a city - it prices the LOCAL PEOPLE out of the market - the locals will no longer be able to afford the rents because you have guys coming from New York, UK, Russia with stronger currencies - think long and hard about what you are encouraging, not just for money but MORALLY. What kind of society do we want Africa to be in this new age?
@planB-BacktoAfrica

It´s clear you have not even watched the video, but sadly you are quick to jump to conclusions and comment!
@michaelomondi-gq5yh
@michaelomondi-gq5yh Год назад
@@planB-BacktoAfricawe can agree to disagree - the airbnb's once they start taking off will be priced for foreigners - not locals - the problem has gotten so out of hand in some cities that the governments have sought to limit which buildings can be used to airbnb or ban it outright - your intentions are noble - but theres cause and effect with any action. At least think about the possibility that i'm right and form a further thought out conclusion - Right now rental market in kenya is relatively cheap and basically a wildwest - Airbnb will turn Nairobi into Medellin Colombia or Rio de Janiero - tons of overpriced apartments sitting empty

@@michaelomondi-gq5yh Dear Michael you have to learn to think outside the box. In Real Estate we have Commercial Real Estate, Residential Real Estate and Industrial Real Estate. Airbnb falls in the commercial Real Estate, you have to learn how tourism builds country and the revenue it brings to the locals. I mean, we have lots of lands in Africa that is untapped, that is where residential comes in. Please let's tell the world our story as an Africans and not what the western countries put on media. By telling our stories brings foreigners to visit our dear Africa continent. Do you know how much Dubai generate from Tourism? Please learn more on Tourism and change your mindset. Thanks and shalom

I've also had the same experience.shared my thoughts on it too. This lady is trying to tell us what we should feel and how we should experience it. No. This video is meant for maybe more investors who will come here and take over coz the laws are easy to go around - to the extend of suggesting we renting to list. So, yeah, this video is not for the average Kenyan. It is for the foreigners who are looking for skirtable investments
@michaelomondi-gq5yh
@michaelomondi-gq5yh Год назад
@@GraceMusyoka Your other comment illustrates exactly what I am trying to explain to her, I hope she read it. Look, what I am saying is not controversial - there are hundreds of articles written about what Airbnb does to 'up and coming' developing cites around the world, when it becomes very popular it prices the locals out of the market - and the trend has already started in Nairobi - in the Kenya coast right now you can rent a large 4 Bedroom house only a few meters from one of the best beaches in the world for 30 days for $1500 - when the airbnb wave hits that region the prices will at least double. As I said her intentions are noble - but when videos like this become more popular in the coming months,on youtube "Airbnb in Kenya!" you will see how it will make rental prices too expensive for locals that work regular jobs and dont earn money in Dollars or Euros
