You're absolutely correct, outside of platinum selling or artists who have been around for decades, there are very few who make a dime off the actual sales of the album. I always assumed that the royalties, which are between 10-20% on average, were pocketed by the artist. Hell, that's not even close to being true. Before you even start looking at the numbers you have to acknowledge that the 10-20 percentage isn't calculated based on the price a consumer paid for a record, but the price the label sold each unit for to the vendor, which is less than half of retail price. Once that amount is calculated, the label usually takes anywhere between 15-25% of the total royalties for packaging and shipping of the record. After that's taken, recoupable costs are taken. These often include promotional costs, production costs, video costs, payment to any backup musicians or backup singers used during production, money needed to shoot a music video, and quite a bit of tour and travel costs.
