Yeah, I know... I accidentally uploaded this to my 'classics' channel the other day. I need to move it here where it belongs.
TANTRAS: The ritual seven notes of freedom to learn and to know the ritual of life. Life is a fight between sources of evil and pure love. Alan and Chris present and relay the struggle out of which comes a positive source. Nous
sommes du soleil. We are of the sun. We can see.
Lyrics:
Nous sommes du soleil we love when we play
Nous sommes du soleil we love when we play
Open doors we find our way
We look we see we smile
Surely daybreaks cross our path
And stay maybe a while
Let them run, let them chase
Let them hide between
Constant doors will open eyes
As life seems like
Life seems like a
Fight, fight, fight
Maybe I'll just sing awhile
And then give you a call
Maybe I'll just say hello
And say maybe that's all
Hurry home as love is true
Will help us through the night
Till we're coming home again
Our life seems like
Life seems like a
Fight, fight, fight
Catch as we look and use the passions that flow
As we try to continue
We receive all we venture to give
Maybe we'll just stand awhile
And surely we can call
Dreams are said to blossom courage
Constant to the soul
Change we must as surely time does
Changes call the course
Held inside we enter daybreaks
Asking for asking four
The source
The source
The source
Sent as we sing our music's total retain
As we try and consider
We receive all we venture to give
All we sai is our
Soul constant sight listener
We won't tender our song clearer
Till we sail
Then I will be there
And I will be there
As clearer companions
Shall call to be near you
They move around tell me that
Move around surely sing
As they don't seem to matter at all
At all at all
Hold me my love, hold me today call me round
Travel we say, wander we chchoose love tune
Lay upon me, hold me around lasting hours
We love when we play
We hear a sound and alter our returning
We drift the shadows and course our way back home
Flying home
Going home
Look me my love sentences move dancing away
We join we receive
As our song memories long hope in a way
Nous sommes do soleil
Hold, me around, lsting ours
We love when we play
Nous sommes do soleil
Nous sommes du soleil
Nous sommes du soleil

I'm a big Yes fan, since 1973. Lucky enough to have seen them live 6 times throughout the years. It took me about a year to get through Topographic Oceans. It took a couple of more years to actually enjoy listening to it. Now decades later I truly love most of the album... especially this song. It's a true YES masterpiece. Beautiful, powerful, meaningful.

@@Metal_Auditor Rick thought the tracks were too long. He said (and claimed that Jon Anderson came to agree with him) that the album would have been better if it had been made in the CD age rather than the age of the LP, when each track had to fit onto one side of a vinyl album.

I was 19 when this came out. Already captivated by Fragile and Close to the Edge, I listened to these four songs endlessly lying on my bed with my headphones-just me and them. Though critics blasted it I always knew there was something deep and moving under the layers and layers of melody and incredible instrumentation -either you felt it or you didn’t. It remains to me-unparalleled.

My first Yes concert was in 1977, I just turned 16 literally the day Elvis died. It was the GFTO tour and I knew a decent handful of songs but I fell in love with the band that night. I didn't know Tales, Relayer, or Yesteryears and it was a labor of love to discover them. I spent many nights with headphones and Yes. Ritual is my favorite off of Tales. There is a RU-vid video called top 10 bass performance of all time and Chris is on it doing the middle part of Ritual. Brilliant!

Why this is in a different category than the rest is that Jon was light years ahead of any of the 1970s prog rocks in terms of Eastern thought. His songs are from his heart, pure light. I had NO idea what he was talking about at 14, but at 50 I see what he was saying --and he like early/mid 30s when he wrote this stuff. Things like: Maybe I'll just say hello and say maybe that's all. SO simple. Like the end of Soon . Like the time I ran away, turned around and you were standing close to me. He is a master of true heart! Timeless and universal

I can't explain it in words now, but when I saw Yes perform this live in 2001 ("Symphonic") I understood *exactly* what Jon was trying to communicate. I'll never forget that moment - I GOT IT, for the first time. It isn't rational, linear thought, which is why it sounds so cryptic to Western ears - but it isn't, really. It's common sense of the soul.

I played Topographic Oceans day and night when it first came out. Hearing it again it still amazes. Forget about trends and genres, this is truly spiritual music. Indeed most of Yes music without Anderson is just pop music, and most (but not all) of Anderson's solo work is embarrassingly corny. But when they came together? YES! Even some of their later work (Magnification, The Ladder) ranks among their best in my opinion. Don't worry about being cool. Follow your heart. You are resonating with many like souls.

This album's right up there along with Close to the Edge and Gates of Delirium. That cycle of out-of-this-world insane key modulation that they go through at the end of the song, with Steve soloing over it... it's one of the greatest things in the world. I can literally listen to it over and over again and it never gets old. You don't even have to listen to the whole thing, really. That part's good enough to stand on its own. I had to listen to it thrice to get the key changes at the end: B minor, G minor, C# major, A minor, Eb major, B minor, F minor, C# minor, G minor, Eb major, A minor, F minor, B minor. Who says you have to keep your chord progressions simple?

Interestingly about that....one of the reasons Rick hated this album, was because he felt they were "bleeding things to death", and that this was not the direction he thought they should be going....the bleeding things quote was in part to things of that nature with the Howe quoting the Close to the Edge theme.

I caught that when I was 15..i wondered how many others did...Yes throws a little taste of other song passages sprinkled thoughout their catalogue..many other bands do that a LOT...but those bands only have 4 chords to work with over and over !!

I was fortunate enough to have seen three shows in NYC and New Haven during the TFTO tour. Unfortunately acoustics were awful at MSG so you couldn't appreciate the intricacies. But this has turned out to be one if favorite albums from ny favorite band. What a time it was, their music will live on through the ages. Happy Holidays to all the YES fans out there!!

Bill Bruford might be a better drummer overall, and is definitely more precise, but there's no denying Alan White's place is Yes. His longevity and service to the band aside, he is also an extremely powerful drummer. The way the blasts those drums during the solo in this song is with such a power than Bruford couldn't come close to.
@Atom-56

ThrawnTheater Good to read your comment, totally agree, Alan plays with real passion for the music.
@arkanoiddude
@arkanoiddude 5 лет назад
I agree...Bruford was a more technical player and was great at syncopation and giving the songs an off-kilter feel, but he was a very subtle drummer, never really a hard-hitter. Alan White was a hard-hitter. With that said I usually do not like Alan's takes on Bruford-era songs, he is incapable of playing in that awkward style that Bruford was so good at.
@Atom-56
@Atom-56 5 лет назад
arkanoiddude Yeah, any musician can play any song. But a lot of them have their own style of playing,, which isn't easy to duplicate, they can only play how it comes natural to them. We all know that no two people are the same. You can't deny, Alan was undoubtedly, the right replacement for Bill Bruford, different of corse, but he brought, a certain quality of depth and richness, to TFTO, which is his debut album for Yes. It's a shame when folk start bickering about who is the best drummer, guitarist or keyboard player. Throughout the years, Yes have had many changes to their lineup, and each musician, has made the diversity and brought an individual ambiance to each of their fantastic albums.
@RiverEdger

Nah..Bruford is THE best prog drummer to pick up the sticks. I like Alan too, but not in the same conversation as Bill. Just listen to Heart of the Sunrise or some of his work in KC.

Thank You for uploading this! I used to walk around the Hoover High School campus in Fresno, with my dog-eared copy of "Autobiography of a Yogi", and this music churning in my brain! - until I met the strange Armenian girl -Kim, who had hair down to her knees, and wore Victorian dresses, with combat boots! She got me "Hooked" on Peter Gabriel, and Genesis - and sadly, YES retreated into the ether! Hearing this was like seeing a Great Old Friend!

This was the first studio project for Alan White as a member of Yes, and he clearly showed he had the mastery of musicianship that it took in order to collaborate with Chris, Steve and Rick, and also be on the same wavelength with Jon's writing and vocals. Alan's creativity really shines through in this masterpiece, The Ritual.

Yes and this album took a beating from critics and fans and even Wakeman. But millions of Yes fans have a special place in their hearts for Tales. Plus so many of us have not just been entertained but truly moved by the beauty and message of their music. They call it ponderous, pretentious, the death of rock but to us it’s just beautiful, healing and inspirational. Their message was all about love. If that’s wrong then Im happy being wrong.

This IS (as some of us 'old-people' say) from a "desert Island" album TfTO (or download -now ?) now-days maybe in a bunker ?? THIS is "all" Jon, Chris & Alan; The Soon portion is to me the pinnacle of prog (and probably) ALL rock, as it WAS (since those days playing the CASSETTE Tape & the (original-issue) Vinyl Album in 1980 (& "Yes" Chris Squire was & IS the best Bassist, to date - it was an honor to see this very-talented man play live - a bright bit of humanity in an often in-human world) PRAY FOR THE PEOPLE of the Glorious state of Ukraine;

I've always thought Tales was a bit too stretched out, but it certainly outdoes anything attempted today. Although being a huge YES fan since 1971, I love their music, but I've never truly understood anything Anderson had to say. It just sounded really great. Their music fit like a jigsaw puzzle as Rick Wakeman once explained to me and others at a greet and meet. They will always amaze me with their complex works of art!!.

First time I've listened to this since the 1970's - then a teenager now a sixty year old wearing headphones infront of his computer and crying his eyes out. This track - the percussion from 14.25 in, I dont know what I'd been on back then but I have a vivid hallucinogenic memory, once seen never forgotten, of crabs on a beach all dancing in time to it, waving their claws and stomping their little crustacean legs.
