The Road - Context 

You are certainly right. This story could have taken place 500 years ago in a time of famine. It doesn't matter. The story is about a doomed man trying to protect his son. It also very poetic at times. He describes a dark grey sky with a barely visible sun moving across.. I paraphrase as I remember, "Like a grieving mother with a lamp"
