What a catastrophic american trailer! You don't sell such a movie like you sell The Avengers! In fact this movie is the proof that you don't need massive visual effects and stupid omnipresent symphonic music to sustain your attention. It's an absolutely captivating movie, beautiful and inspiring. Zhang Ziyi makes just an outstanding, unreal performance. I greatly recommend it to any thoughtful and inteligent person, the others just go watch The Avengers 2!
Just finished watching this movie. My wife and I cried our eyes out.... We only managed to see it because we rented it from our local japanese konbiniya....
A mesmerizing film about love. And not in the Hollywood-bullshit-sense, but in the real sense of the word love. A piece of advice: If you're suicidal and you feel like all hope is gone, just watch this film. It might convince you to stay a little longer.
Thank you my friend. Your taste in film is immeasurable as well. I will never forget the first time I watched "Raise The Red Lantern". That film is amazing. I just recently watched a South Korean film called "A Werewolf Boy" and I was blown away by it; so much that I ordered the South Korean extended edition blu-ray version of the film. Yes I agree, "The Road Home" is a masterpiece. I was also really touched by Zhang Yimou's "Happy Times" and of course "To Live" as well.
This is the type of film you can watch multiple times, and and pick up new small details each time. If you watch closley, you will find something interesting in each shot. Rather than make the story so complicated so that the acting and filming takes a second seat, this film focuses on the acting, and the environment in which these people live. For me, this film flows like a good travel documentary, in that it shows the good in humanity rather than find its faults just to make a good story.
I totally agree with you. First Chinese movie I saw was To Live. That is such a fantastic movie! Some other really good Chinese movies are The Blue Kite, Raise the Red Laltern and Farewell My Concubine. Zhang Yimou is very talented.
Also check out some of Wong Kar Wai's films like "2046", "In The Mood For Love", "Days of Being Wild", "Happy Together" and "Chungking Express". Powerful films. "2046" is mesmerizing with an all star cast of Tony Leung, Ziyi Zhang, Carina Lau, Gong Li, Faye Wong and a cameo with Maggie Cheung, "2046" has an incredible score too highlighted with songs by the late, great Nat King Cole. Chen Kaige directed "Farewell My Concubine", "Temptress Moon" and "The Emperor and the Assassin".
Few love stories on film compare to this masterpiece, the only other two being Chinese Box with Gong Li and Jeremy Irons and Total Eclipse with Dicaprio!
Thank you for your suggestions. I have never seen “The Story of Qiu Ju”, “Happy Times”, “Life Show” nor “Seventeen Years” and I like your taste so much I just bought them on Amazon. Now here are my suggestions for you: “Kinamand” and “The King of Masks”.
Yes, “Not One Less” is very good. “The Road Home” was a masterpiece so it’s hard to measure-up to that film but let me know if you liked “Kinamand” and “King of Masks”. By the way, “The Way Home” was an excellent movie in which I saw in a theater when it came out. The fact that you loved “The Road Home” and “The Way Home” tells me that you have very good taste (at least in my opinion). Enjoy.
I watched it more than ten times the time I got the VCD. I cried every single time of it. The story is so simple yet so incredibly beautiful. I wish I can own a DVD, this is timeless classic.
Man, Chinese cinema of the 1990s and early 2000s was really something else. The amount of masterpieces they produced is unreal. In the Heat of the Sun, Hero, To Live (Huozhe), Chungking Express, Farewell my Concubine, You Hua Haohao Shuo, Suzhou River to name just a few. It was an incredible time for fans of Asian movies.
Beautiful film, breathtaking acting bu ziyi zhang though somehow repetitive in some scenes lacking depiction of their falling in love and also the male actor is quite frankly not good looking. This movie could have been an unforgettable classic of chinese filmography if a few changes where made.
This the greatest love story (or one of them at least). Truly sad films don't make me cry they fill my heart with a deep aching sadness. My eyes were dry in this film. That's how I know it truly struck a chord. I would recommend this movie to anyone.
One of the most beautiful movies ever made. Zhang Yimou is in top form here. Wo De Fu Qin Mu Qin is the real name of the movie and the actual translation of the film is "My Mom and My Dad". One of my Top 10 films of all time. Ziyi Zhang is angelic in this film. This is what love is suppose to be. If you like this film, watch: To Live aka Lifetimes, Eat Drink Man Woman, The Story of Qiu Ju, Happy Times, Life Show, 20:30:40, Seventeen Years and The Way Home. Wonderful films.
What touched me about Zhang Yimou's "Happy Times" was not necessarily the core story about the man that is trying to find a wife but the touching story within about the blind girl. Her story is very sad but yet motivational at the same time. "Happy Times" is really something to see. ^_^
I am glad that my suggestions have helped; such great works of art are these films. I have "The King of Masks" and haven't watched it yet. From your suggestion, I am going to watch it ASAP. And I am looking for "Kinamand" as I type this comment. I heard the "Ocean Heaven" starring Jet Li is really goo; I have it but haven't watched it yet. One of my other favorites is Zhang Yimou's "Not One Less". Wong Kar Wai does some amazing work too like "In The Mood for Love" and "2046". ^_^
just watched it for the first time!! woow no words to express what i am feeling now!! i feel love!! warmth and everything!! such a wonderful movie!! hollywood crap can never beat asian cinema!! just wow!!
Simply put, this is the best Love movie ever committed to a screen. It has no equal. This is real, raw, unadulterated Love that somehow was perfectly captured in celluloid.
