The region of Ladakh, often called "Little Tibet", provides access to the rest of India via an air route normally operational in summer. However, during the winter season, this connection becomes uncertain, with frequent delays or cancellations of flights. The only viable route south, towards Manali and Delhi, which runs along the Indus Valley, is impassable for more than nine months a year.
