But there are some, whom I know /know of personally who are right now on the cusp of a "If I can't have it, lets burn it all down" mindset. Ob course, I hope nothing like that happens, but... for some the tension is there.

Yeah, the entire college of heralds pretty much came to a screeching halt asking how did that happen, how do we prevent it from happening again, and what do we do to make sure this gets counted the same as offensive charges.

And FWIW, I've been in the SCA for 43 years (that's 2 more than that jackass), and I need to state that: a) Those of us who've been around for decades have NO more claim on what the Society should be, outside of what's in Corpora, than anyone else who's been in long enough to have a good grasp of what the group is. b) The more bigots with shriveled hearts like him that we eliminate from the organization, the better the SCA will be. I am SO glad he's identified himself publicly so the rest of us can know to avoid him, and warn newcomers about him. c) I feel sad for the good folks of Ansteorra who have to live with the shame that this asshat is not only a Viscount, Knight, and Pelican, but also a Lion of Ansteorra. He is no role model for anyone of decency. d) I don't know you, sir, but you are now my new hero. Nice faux-Texas accent, too, though it appears that he's originally from elsewhere so probably doesn't speak like a good ol' boy unless he acquired it as protective plumage. Just to clarify his claim that BLM is against traditional family values: in the About section of the BLM website, they state they wish to remove the emphasis on the traditional nuclear family and replace it with extended family structures, village structures and other non traditional family groupings. This would be frightening to people like Galen because it destroys the idea of A MAN as the head of the household, rather than acknowledging everyone needs help sometimes and raising kids is HARD WORK.
"When I was a young black child...." I grew up in the deep south in a small Louisiana town. There was a "village mentality" when it came to how kids were raised. It was kinda nice, looking back.

When I first became involved in the SCA, over 25 years ago, what attracted me most was the egalitarian idea that it was inclusive as opposed to exclusive. And that inclusion was explained to me as not having race, gender, sexual orientation, etc., matter in the least. And, that while the purpose of the SCA was to study medieval history, as reenactors, we were to recreate medieval history, not as it was, but, rather, as it should have been or could have been; an ideal society -- something to aspire to. Like many, I have been disappointed and disillusioned by the backbiting, ugliness, and backstabbing that seems to have become more prevalent in recent years. It is my personal hope that, with work, we can do a better job of recreating The Middle Ages as they could have been. Well said, sir.
I do not understand how someone who studies history cannot understand THAT TIMES CHANGE. That hopefully as time progresses the "circle of humanity and respect" grows. Plus the SCA has always cherry picked its values. We do not have Serfs, Slaves, etc. The whole point is to learn about history and to bring the best values of the past into the modern day... and to reject the bad parts of the past.
I had fallen from the SCA a number of years ago and was unwilling to return after hearing about people like this. Thank you for reminding me that accepting all doesn’t mean accepting terrible people like that too. Perhaps it is worth returning after all.
He had to work at it. He started (when I met him) as a devout Pagan, polyamorous, open marriage, and - when the situation arose - supported abortion. He was fine with his sister being part of a thruple, and lesbian. Now, his sister is married to another woman & Galen was the only member of his family not to attend (I was there) One of his children is transitioning -- but not at home. They live with their aunts. He may or may not have continued his bondage fetish. My bet is that he did. And his Army "honors" consists of various "I was there", "I was this rank" and the crowning honor -- a good conduct medal. I kid you not. Most of his family don't confess to being related.

Well, I joined in 1974. A lot of us were counter-culture ex-hippies. The SCA was our dream world but we never forgot we were part of real life at the same time. Galen seems to think he speaks for old timers; he doesn't. By the way, I dropped out in 1997 to become active in church and am now in ministry. My God is God who celebrates love and diversity. Go to a local event first. Decide if you like the people you meet there. Going to Pennsic as your first event is like drinking right from the big connection on the fire hydrant. You need time to get your stuff together, too, so you're not wearing the same tunic for a week. (I did that, recommend against it)

I only ever knew Galen peripherally, when I dabbled in the SCA decades ago. Didn't really catch these attitudes from him, but I guess I wasn't paying attention. I have run across the occasional SCAdian who expresses similar attitudes. It's just very dismaying, and I'm disappointed in him.

I am not sure I believe his statement that he's been in the SCA for 40 years, unless he is counting from the time he was a little kid. From the tone of some of the comments I'm reading, it seems he has a reputation (not a good one) and what he DOES understand, delivered with a huge overcurrent of anger, begrudgery and overwhelming indignation, is that the SCA is evolving into a better model, he's being left behind, and his bad attitudes/behavior will no longer be overlooked, no matter that he's a peer, a noble and ex-prince. GOOD! Now.....what kind of barbeque sauce goes good on his extra-crispy kind of ribs?
