Intelligent, indestructible and with no humans on board, these sailboats are plotting their own course through the waters of San Francisco Bay. If Richard Jenkins gets his way, soon there’ll be hundreds of them - trawling the oceans for data.

I guess what kcaz is saying is to resolve any mysteries. But I would say the mysteries are largely surrounding the magnetic anomalies in the area, and also the fact that there are two sets of nearly identical looking islands but quite some distance apart which caused issues for dead-reckoning navigation. I don't recall hearing any incidents since modern navigation equipment such as GPS came in to common use.

Nothing short of genius. I only wish the video had shown how they sail on a run or even on a reach. Clearly they looked as if they could pinch upwind. I also wanted to see them knocked down by a following sea and then pop back up again. What do they do in the Horse latitudes? (the doldrums) Do they need to hove to in a squall? What type of proximity sensors do they have? How do they navigate through shoals? Can they take advantage of tides? I have lots of questions.

I always wondered if larger versions of these unmanned sea drones, would have "submarine" capabilities, to instruct the drone submarine to move to a certain point, DIVE, then follow a plotted path across the sea, Rise and then dock. These will be able to transport or smuggle packages across oceans, undetected by radars and coast guards. like how aerial drone are being used to drop off packages, these will be the underwater versions. You wont need a crew for them, or food for the long voyage.
