I am totally on the General's side - he was aware the whole OP was a bluff and he was ready to take his losing hand when the government called it - even the fact that he launched the missile in the end was just him trying to stay in control of his team when threatened with mutiny, realizing they would just go mad without his leadership. This movie came out at a time when people were even more distrusful of the government - the whole "who shot JFK" ending kinda alludes to the amount of distrust in official narratives that was prominent in the 90`s.

Trying to find a way for everyone to stay outta each other personal lives, especially the government and limit what it could do. Yet we still suffer the devil we know as to not have anarchy but it's getting pretty close these days. They ain't even making laws anymore. Just one local official saying I mandate this and men with guns going around enforcing it. I can go on a long rant but probably get banned for misinformation for quoting the news, government websites or even what elected officials have said. All the sources they say to trust and never listen to anything else. Simple as fine print, understanding how they speak in legalese, technically the truth yet so misleading. Especially the news when they might print a correction, live edit a news article, and still run with the first lie told in every other unrelated story. We are in such a sad state when people have the memory of a gold fish and bureaucrat types that blame you if you get tricked by them.

He was stupid to not make sure everyone was on the same page. How it should've gone: General: "Hey everyone, so if we start launching the missiles, just to be clear, it'll be a bluff, I'm not about killing millions of innocents." Dishonorable Marines: "No General, that's literally what we're here for - to get our fucking money." General: Okay then, we're all going home then. In reality: General: "Well I guess I'll wait until everyone else wants to kill innocents to tell them that's not what I really want."

I recently watched "The Star Spangled Banner As You Never Heard It", and it reinspired me, and then immediately saddened me, to see that we don't have men like this a the head of our great nation.

By checking out most of the videos you have posted i've noticed a war/action theme so i would recommend Hamburger Hill for you. It shows a lot about what was wrong with how Vietnam was fought at the policy level and how the ground troops paid for it. I truelly believe you would enjoy it wether or not you react to it is fully up to you. Keep up the good content budy.
The General's heart was in the right place, and it's sad he felt he had to take extreme measures to do it, but ultimately his methods were too much. Too many innocent people's lives were put at stake. But the best part of the movie is that he's very sympathetic and he's not an evil person.
100% reflected my view on it with that comment to the very last detail! There's much more nuance to these things than "that guy is good" and "that guy is evil". One can do the right thing for the wrong reasons using good methods, or the wrong thing for the right reasons using bad methods or any mixture of the 3.
The dude only wanted benefits paid out for the families of the 80+ Marines who died doing their jobs. He spent years begging those at the top to do the right thing, but they were content to leave the red tape where it was. They didn't care. The price Hummel demanded was a pittance and they still didn't care. He should've just threatened DC.
I feel like Morse in particular never gets praised for his performances, because he’s never off the wall and always subdued, but he elevates everything he’s in. He’s like the film equivalent of that great utility player on a team that plays multiple positions, and while he doesn’t put up all star stat lines himself, ties the team together and puts it over the top.
Absolutely...and Hummel's team is actually packed with terrific actors...David Morse is just the beginning. John C McGinley, Tony Todd, Bokeem Woodbine, and Gregory Sporleder have all had pretty amazing careers and played many terrific roles. And that is even without mentioning any of the other great people in this really packed cast...after all, John Spencer's portrayal of Womack makes him one of the several great "villains" in The Rock. 💯✌
To every other movie reactor out there thats NOT reacting to The Rock.....this is how its done. Not sure why this movie doesnt get enough love but its great.
This was the first movie I watched that the "bad guy" had a very respectable reason behind his actions and acted with honor when time needed. It is probably why it is still one of the best action movies ever.
One of my faves scenes in this film is the "you've been around a lot of dead bodies is that normal?" " You mean the twitching? What do you want me to do kill him again?"
I’ve always loved this movie. As a Grunt it held a special place even though it was total fiction. Looking at Afghanistan right now I see significant parallels to why Hummel did what he did.
He's a sympathetic character, but the cause of what makes a terrorist doesn't change the fact that he became one. Granted, he didn't kill innocents but his men wanted to and he failed to control it.
I can appreciate Hummel's outrage and readiness to cross so many lines. He had over eighty Marines under his command that died doing their jobs. The government used red tape and redacted records to deny benefits to their families. The amount would have been a pittance compared to what they spend every hour of every day. General Hummel begged them for years to pay those families what they were owed, but still they refused, probably while blowing billions on boondoggles. He should've just set up and threatened DC. A decent number of politicians could've just written them a check on a whim.

Glad you enjoyed this, sir. Michael Bay’s best film for two reasons. 1. He still didn’t have enough power in Hollywood at this point to have any budget he wanted, so his taste for excess is, for him at least, relatively restrained. 2. His vomit inducing militarism and flag waving is kept somewhat in check by a smart script penned by Die Hard with a Vengeance writer Jonathan Hensleigh and polished by veteran UK comedy writing duo Clement and La Frenais which keeps the Connery elements authentically British and witty. By the time Pearl Harbor came out, Bay pretty much had carte blanche. All his worst instincts that previously had checks and balances on them were demonstrated in full force and he’s never really recovered. (Plus audiences like it and he makes a ton of money so there’s not much sign of him ever making something as balanced as The Rock again.)
this movie has SO many great lines "hows your bowling arm" , "make sure you don't get us all fuckin killed", "winners go home and fuck the prom queen", "some sniper's gonna get his ass" I love Sean Connery

i always assumed the general launched that missile to take it out of play, knowing if he didn't his men would've launched it instead with full casualties. redirecting it to detonate underwater was the best way neutralise the threat it posed to the civilian population leaving only the one missile that wasn't ready to launch left.
If you have never seen the movie The Last Castle, you should give it a watch. You’d really like it. Ed Harris’s roll in this movie kind of reminds me of Robert Redford’s roll in that movie for some reason.
The ways that Mason's character fits in the bond timeline are so numerous it's next to impossible the character isn't based on James Bond to a degree. It feels intentional.
I’ve seen this movie at least a hundred times and I never get tired of it. It’s one of the all time great action movies and Nicholas Cage was ridding high. I knew this was your kind of movie. Great reaction.
Best opening scene (in my opinion). ''They're not coming for us are they sir?'', gets me every time. It wasn't included in this reaction but just remembering it still gets me emotional.
@@15blackshirt I’m probably in the minority here but I can’t watch will smith movies. I loved fresh prince but he takes me out of every movie he is in. Michael Bay is a weird anomaly. Like he sold his soul to satan or something because he is a terrible director but keeps getting work. It’s like M. Night shamawhatever. They can both keep putting out progressively worse movies and still get more projects greenlit.
Something else to consider when considering the General's position in this is that he didn't make the issue public so there was no need for the government to worry about trying to save face or have a PR disaster - they could have gone through with Hummel's demands and no one but the hostages would have been the wiser - and they could all be made to sign NDRs or face some sort of retribution. You're right - I'm rooting for Mason and Goodspeed the whole time, but this is one of the few where you feel for Hummel, even if you can't like most of his subordinates (but what kind of people would you expect to be willing to turn traitor/mercenary?).
This is my favorite Michael Bay movie, mostly because I'm from the San Francisco Bay Area. I was lucky enough to sleep overnight on Alcatraz back in the early 90s, when I was in the Boy Scouts. We had to help sweep up the paths, and then got a private tour of the island. We brought our own sleeping bags, and slept in Cell Block D. That place is much, _much_ creepier at night after all the tourists leave. The fog rolls in, and you can't see the city anymore. It's like you're trapped in this little pocket of reality where nothing exists but the island. On the other hand, the audio tour is way more interesting when you don't have to deal with the crowds. Looking back, that was such a great and unique experience.

I unfortunately am on a fixed income and can't even afford my medications, out else I would be a Patreon member. But if you see this, I recommend 'the watcher' because I know you like Keanu Reeves. I think I was around 14 when I saw this, back when it first came out on VHS(friend's older brother made us some bootlegs) and holy shit did it blow my mind. The music, the action scenes...growing up in the 90's was pretty sweet honestly!

Agree with you, you can see the general even though had turned to the "dark side", still wanted to do the right thing, and one thing that pissed me off about the government in this movie is that, not only they didn't give af about the soldiers but after everything Mason did to help, they still wouldn't let him alone. Yes, one of my favorites from back in the day. I just remember sitting on the edge of my seat in a movie theater because of exactly how you interpreted it, your not sure who you should be rooting for.
Fun fact, my father did the electronic wiring in the aircraft (back before everything was CGI) to get the cockpits lit up for the filming. He owned his own avionics repair company in California where he worked on a number of Hollywood personalities airplanes and ended up getting recommended. He even did the wiring in an airliner in another movie (think it was the bodyguard but don't recall).
Yup! This was the era when Bruckheimer had every summer awesome R-RATED popcorn action blockbuster! So entertaining. Some might say cheesy, but I say FUCKING AWESOME! The Enemy of The State with Will Smith is another mainstream masterpiece, Directed by Tony Scott (RIP), Ridley's brother and one of the greatest directors of this genre. Heartbreaking that he killed himself...

I'm so happy you got to finally see 'The Rock'. When I first saw it in the theaters, it was a random thing with me finishing work and meeting my friends. I hadn't seen the trailers so I had 'zero clue' what the film was about.. and even after the first scene I started realizing how nice I didn't know / never seen a trailer about it. After that for any film I'm likely to want to see.. I do what I can to avoid the trailers. It's hard but I've found it's definitely worth it. Thank you again for sharing your first time reaction and thoughts of such a very good film. : )
The best part is the self-developed motion sensor in the shower. As its developer said, nobody knows anything like that and nobody expects this. Then set up a standard motion sensor so the Seals have something to play with and as soon as they think they have neutralized it, boooom Mr Backup is ready to go! Incidentally, if General Hummel had really been a vicious psychopath, he would have sent all the rockets off after the massacre in the shower. The only major mistake old man Hummel made, if you want to do something like this, you need a crew you can trust, this other marines, first time coop in such a critical mission... now THAT was a bad move.
The men he COULD trust were the first ones to die. So he was left with Cpt. Frye and Cpt. Darrow who were complete psychos. If his other men had not died first, Frye and Darrow would probably have been kept in check.
I apologize if this has already been mentioned. But a much beloved fan theory is the Sean Connery's character in this film is actually in fact James Bond, and the more you look into it the more it makes sense.
Speaking of the James Bond theory. Look around on RU-vid and there is a guy who actually broke that down and is pretty damn sure that John Mason is in fact 007. And let me tell you, the dude brings the receipts too...
Atrophine is actually not necessary to be injected into your heart directly. Stabbing yourself in the chest puts you at risk for puncturing your lung potentially as well as your heart. You would probably end up bleeding to death with the hole you just made as a result. Either from no way to breath or bleeding internally. This movie got the treatment right. But according to medical experts, not the delivery system. The recommended treatment is Atrophine and combined with another drug known as Pralidoxime. The military, as well as civilian emergency services, uses what's called the "Mark 1" kit that has both medications in an auto-injector. The recommended sites are the thighs or hips if you are by any chance exposed to VX-gas.

Ed Harris and Sean Connery steal the show in this movie. Ed Harris is a criminally under rated actor, specially given how many iconic movies he's been in The Right Stuff, The Abyss, Apollo 13, The Truman Show etc. Great action movie with a compelling base story and a non one dimensional antagonist.
