It blows my mind that Cal and Jani, who are huge advocates for "slippery slope" when it comes to hunting rights, can't make the connection that Steve is bringing up about chipping away at the Constitution or our rights in general. Like, how is tearing down historical statues or renaming bird species because someone might be "offended" any different than a ban on certain types of hunting (bear hunting, hound hunting, etc) because it offends animal rights lobbyist? It's a step in the wrong direction. Give an inch and they'll take a mile. I mean come on. Glad Steve is thinking clearly.

Man discovers species: Is credited with discovery of such species by naming it. Century or more or less later because there are over-sensitive people: I heard one bad thing about that guy who died decades or longer ago, lets get rid of his credit to our historical record cause my fee fees hurt. That's essentially all I heard. It's funny how the birders opposed the name change.

I’m in agreement with Steve regarding the AOS changing the English names of bird species. It’s an overkill reaction to very small problem. Many of the bird species we interact with regularly in Montana would have name changes: Swainson’s Thrush, Steller’s Jay, Townsend’s Solitaire, Wilson’s Snipe, Barrow’s Goldeneye, Clark’s Grebe, Cooper’s Hawk, Williamson’s Sapsucker, Cassin’s Finch… the list goes on.

Thoroughly enjoyed listening (and watching) to Zeke. Clearly a couple of rhe people on the pod grasp how great Zeke is in rodeo. Incredible! Glad the meateater supports him.

I was under the impression Cal’s hatred towards whitetails was due to his lack of ability to consistently harvest them, never occurred to me it would have anything to do with their name.

Etymology is history in it's own right and I think that history should be preserved. It is not within the rights of any past, current, or future heirs of the human existence to perform post mortem justice on figures, peoples, or events. Names of places, peoples, and things seem to only change when a conquering has happened. Words are power and to claim authority over them is a serious matter. The natural evolution of words is normal amongst cultures, regions, and languages but to force that change on a large scope, especially by a minority group (mathematically), is not a trifling thing and should be seriously considered. When I was young I remember waking up to the sound a mouse chewing on the wood of my dresser. Now awake, I couldn't fall back asleep with the crunches and scrapes now gnawing at my ear drums. I found the mouse rather quickly but every time I uncovered it under a shirt or drove it out of some other hiding place, it would just dart to its next temporary refuge. I spent a while chasing the brown blur from spot to spot to spot. Wherever the mouse was found I would remove or block that cover so that it could not be able to return. Eventually, over the course of an hour, I had successfully removed any opportunity for the mouse to hide. The mouse then ran laps around the base boards having been exposed but not yet caught. Eventually I had the mouse cornered in a closet with no way to run without being directly within striking distance of the butt end of a broom I held like a spear. After only a few jousts later the mouse was dead. Changing these birds names today is not the same as ripping up the constitution. I also don't think that it's a means to that eventual end but for most people but for some people, and more than I think I would want to admit, it could be. If language, words, and history (both good and bad) are the mouse, there is a real boy with a broom stick using these events to eventually strike when the opportunity to achieve its means comes. We are already seeing the battle for controlling and policing language happening right in front of us. To Steve's point, this decision to change bird names seems like it has an agenda driving it. I don't think we should give ground in a direction we would ultimately not want to go in. Don't give up ground now because it's more convenient to move on. Eventually you may look around and realize you've been backed into an unescapable corner.

Can we remind Janis and Cal that their way of thinking is shared by those that tell us men should be able to compete against women in sports and share locker rooms with them because we all have to protect their feelings, as well as those that insist women who say they are men prove men can give birth. Just one day before this episode I found a camera thats clearly been in the woods for months or years, and I thought about bringing a device to check it. I'm a descendant of DB. My family ended up in south Indiana during the Civil War. Then northern Louisiana in 1880s. SE Texas on the edge of the pinney woods of the old Big Thicket range and near Sam Houston national forest near the Trinity river is where my family came in the 1910's. I grew up in the hardwood Trinity River Valley between Dayton, Kenefick, Old River, and Liberty Texas. Still spend most of my time down in the bottoms.

Here's an interesting idea, as for the tracking of wolverines a similarity pop's up in my head for an application called Ebird. Could that app or a developer of that app create an application for sighting of animals. Providing dates and time when seen, numbers of animals, GPS coordinates, Picture or sound of the animal identified. All of this fed into a database, that can be used to track numbers and locations.

I got kicked out of archery life for my opinion on sitting in someone elses treestand on public land. A guy was complaining about someone else setting up a treestand near his treestand and I said he was being a baby, and that I would have just sat in his stand instead of putting up a new one. Funny thing is that no matter what we call the bird, the name came from someone. Animals can't name themselves. Furthermore, I don't see any of the proponents of the changes actually discovering any species. Yes it may be antiquated and outdated in practice but those fellas actually went out and discovered new species of animals that we never knew about before. Why take that away from them? Because it excludes everyone that didnt discover the animal? Seems dim to me
