In this video, Sam heads into the Roding River Reserve in the Richmond Ranges for a day tramp to the United nad Champion Mines.
This area is accessed from the end of Aniseed Valley Road near Richmond (South Island, New Zealand).
The tramp starts at the Roding River Reserve car park and follows a 4WD road east along the Roding River. This trip takes in the Roding Dam which still supplies water to Nelson to this day. It then continues on to the Champion Mine smelter which still contains a number of relics and remnants from the smelter which existed from the late 1880s through to the 1910s.
After leaving the main track, the track then heads uphill to the United Mine where the no1 and no2 mine shafts are still in place but are not safe to enter.
From the United Mine it is possible to continue to climb up and over the saddle of the hill and drop down into the Champion Creek valley and the Chamption Mine. The Champion Mine area also contains interesting relics and a number of deep mine shafts can also be viewed. Again, please be very careful around the mine shafts which are not fenced and are very deep.
Overall, this is a facisnating area and must do loop for anybody interested in the history of Nelson. It provides a good insight into the remote and difficult circumstances the miners would have been dealing with as well.
