1:00:18 WOAH 319 hit points sounded like way too much, I tried to figure out how that number was gotten and only got 219. the first level in rogue would give 8 hit points, the other ten levels in rogue would give (10*5) 50 hit points. the six levels in barbarian would give (6*7) 42 hit points. the twenty constitution would give (5*17) 85 hit points. Finally, the tough feat would give (2*17) 34 hit points. all added up is (8+50+42+85+34) = 219hp. Am I missing something? where did the extra 100hp come from?

Considering a level 20 barb with 24(+7) con and tough would have 320 HP, I think it's safe to say you're right here.

What's 100 hp between friends? >.> great catch - I totally fat fingered that one! Pinning this and editing the spreadsheets/graphs (it changes the numbers, of course, but doesn't really change the overall result of - "this build is middle of the pack vs. other tank builds against direct attacks, and much better against dex save spells") :)

For roleplay: rogues don't have to be seen only as "the thief." Rogues are the most skill based class of the martial classes. Going back into rogue can be seen as returning your focus onto honing your craft. In this case, your agility and prowess in making the killing blow. Looking at the phantom subclass the roleplay opportunities are just *chief kiss* so I feel I would be more inclined to go that route but maybe one of your ancestors was a powerful wizard. Think it could be fun to have a bickering fight between your mother's and father's side of the family. One was more martial and the other were casters.

I have my own quite effective and strange version of this build. Basically you abuse the Ancestral Protectors by running away after you strike a creature. The build relies on running in, dealing damage and then running away. By not requiring a high AC you can boost strength and utilize reckless attack, without the downside of enemies attacking you at advantage. You start off with Custom Lineage and pick up the Mobile feat. This gives you a 40 ft movement speed and makes it so that creatures you make an attack against don't get attacks of opportunity against you. Your stats should prioritise strength followed by constitution. You start of in rogue for the dexterity saving throws proficiency. After that you take 5 levels in Ancestral Guardian Barbarian, this gives you extra attack and now 50 ft movement. After that you take the rest of your levels in Rogue. You wield two shortswords and use strength to attack with them. A typical turn would look like this: You run 25 feet towards your enemy, you strike them twice at advantage with reckless attack. You deal your sneak attack damage and your rage damage. If you want you can bonus action dash as a rogue to make your total movement this turn 100 ft or attack again with two weapon fighting. The enemy you attacked can't make an opportunity attack against you so you run away. You run either 75 ft or 25 ft away depending if you attacked with your bonus or used it to for example disengage from other enemies or even to hide. Now the enemy has disadvantage to attack any of your allies in range of it and even if they hit they would deal half damage. Neither can the enemy hit you with the advantage from your reckless attack. There is also great synergy between evasion and danger sense making you unbeatable at dexterity saving throws. I'm aware of the many situations in which this tactic fails, such as when against many fast creatures. But even when this tactic fails you're essentially still in a great position. If an enemy hits you you're still quite bulky and at higher levels you can uncanny dodge. This build also does great damage by doing guaranteed sneak attack and rage damage, with advantage on the attacks. All this while most often greatly reducing the threat of the most dangerous enemy on the board.

I made a build like this using a Longbow and then just utilizing steady aim to give myself Advantage from 80+ ft away. You rage on your first BA and just hope one attack hits and then keep on attacking the rest of the time. You lose out on most Barbarian features but it works pretty darn well overall.

Different but somewhat similar, I've thought about a swashbuckler/battlemaster (5th lvl) as a sort of rescue tank (not the front-line tank). I love the combo thematically because swashies really should have reposte, and in this case it also means 4 extra sneak attacks per rest. So, Dueling with rapier and shield (with your studded leather). Once the dex hits 20, your AC is 19, and hopefully you'll improve that with magic armor and/or shield. Also, two attacks, so even if you don't have advantage you are still likely to hit at least once, triggering your sneak attack (combat-wise, the whole point of rogues). So, at the cost of two sneak attack die (because of the non-rogue levels) you gain a better AC (the shield), two attacks (and still have your bonus action), +2 damage, 4 ripostes (extra sneak attacks), and you are still thematically a swashie.
@leonardoellis5033

Wouldn't a creature that targets one of your Mirror Images have disadvantage on the arrack roll if its affected by your Ancestral Protecrors? That would add additional tankiness to the build. Also if you pick the Sentinel Feat it would provide another chance to use your Sneak Attack out of your turn.

Finesse weapons allow you to chose to use strength or dex as the modifier. If you use a Rapier as a strength weapon you then get your damage bonus from Rage, you can use Reckless Attack, and since Sneak Attack only requires that the attack be made with a Finesse Weapon this attack qualifies. Up the tank factor by being a Wild Hunt Shifter so nothing can get advantage on attacking you within 30ft while shifted.
@DnDDeepDive
@DnDDeepDive 2 года назад
You could definitely do this. Unfortunately, you'd either seriously hurt your AC if you tried to maximize strength, or your damage if you tried to maximize Dex. I think the best of both worlds is to still max dex and use it for attacks, though we'd miss out on the 2 rage damage per attack.

Re: your earlier tank builds and spell damage - some small changes to the Artificer-Armorer tank make it competitive. Run a forest gnome to get the advantage on Int, Wis, and Cha spell saves and take Shield Master at 4th for the Dex saves. You can follow with Lucky later if you want. That greatly increases your tankiness to spells and you can afford to use the feat slots.

College of creation bard and any artificer, maybe armorer. Specifically in a campaign where gold = Exp Bard creates item, artificer infuses item, bard uses charm person, make friends or a high persuasion roll to sell the item at max price or higher. You can use alter self, disguise self or alter memory to keep from getting caught. While strictly useful outside of making money and thus leveling up, it might work well in a less combat heavy campaign where bribes are common

Great work Colby, good to hear you had a nice break. Ancestral barb was my first double digit level character, handed down by the DM for a one shot. I even got to use the divination ability, which was a huge boost to helping me develop the "RP" of RPG. It was def the best tank for ally protection; the black dragon had a terrible time targeting anyone else. This tank is SOOO good for taunting BBEG if they have no add mobs. I do have a question: when did Mountain Dwarf let you choose the subrace +2 ASI? In the PHB, it's +2 con for any dwarf, +2 str for Mountain. Was there a variant or optional rule I missed letting people play with scores like that in RAW? Thanks!

I actually feel that bouncing back and forth between two classes is the MORE organic storytelling way of doing it. That way, both classes are a part of your character the whole way through. It's much more jarring, imo, to have to manufacture a crisis of faith to describe a class switch, rather than having a coherent identity the whole way through. Unfortunately, extra attack encourages you to sprint to level 5 in a martial class before branching off, rather than simultaneous progression, so it's much more MECHANICALLY satisfying to stick with one class for a run of levels before going back

So, about halfway through this build I couldn't help thinking, "This is supposed to be a Rogue Tank build, right? Seems more like a Skillful Barbarian build." Then finally comes the 2nd level of Rogue at level 8 and now I'm thinking, "Wait! What about Feral Instincts? Getting Advantage on Initiative and Raging on Surprise Rounds." lol That said though, I would perhaps look into getting that 2nd Rogue level much sooner. Possibly around level 5 or 6. That way, after hitting a target and applying your Ancestral Protectors on them, you use Cunning Action to Disengage. Now they either have to attack the nearest ally (presumably a second tank so you have your Sneak Attack from an ally within 5f of target) with disadvantage and with half damage, or chase you down, potentially procing AoO unless they use their action to disengage, or have some other means to escape the second tanks AoO. This does make for more of an off-tank rather than a main tank for the party, but either way could still be an option with this build. As for reasons about going back to being a Rogue. For this build, given you went with Dwarf, You could say that you've always been a rogue, utilizing your craft and such, and the whole Ancestral Guardians thing you could flavor around Dwarven beliefs/connections to their great Ancestors. As for all the raging despite playing off being more of a rogue/thief, well... your a dwarf. You love battle. lol A concept I've always had since 3.5 however, was essentially a former bandit turned mercenary. His life as a bandit is what made him both a Rogue (using cunning and guile, setting traps and ambushes) and a Barbarian (Growing up in a "Survival of the Fittest" type society) and he later employs both of these traits in his mercenary work. Sadly, 5e makes it a bit hard to make an urban style barbarian, with Berserker perhaps being the only non-tribal/nature sort of Archetype.

You are not wrong about the typical number of encounters/day. Most tables I've been at have 3-4, maybe 4-5 and I find if I am in a PUG players expect that and will often go Nova immediately in the first fight then get pissed if they don't get rests. For my groups at tier 2 or higher I am running 5-6, maybe 7-8 per day. But I have a pack of cheese monkeys that control their water through fights and barely break a sweat in typical encounters. So I intentionally write adventures in live dungeons and cities. On the occasions they encounter an old abandoned ruin or cave networks, each encounter is a bit tougher and its also possible for random encounters to occur

Your 1st paragraph is also my experience/observation of tables. At my table though we don't get pissed as the DM does provide 1 short rest and 1 catnap (if someone picked it up). Those short rest classes/abilities are designed to be used 1/2 combats and thankfully my DM understands that. no more boring combat sequences of "i attack" every single round or "i eldritch blast,". This also balances more the weaker martial/gishes with the long rest casters.
@dhaas4698
@dhaas4698 3 года назад
It's a balancing act right? I am pretty liberal with short rests. 1 hour? Psht, fine, whatever. A whole day? Nah. To me its about resource allocation. Let the melee classes do their thing, step in when necessary. Like music actually. One of the hardest things to teach young musicians is that great music is an artistic combination of sounds and silence. Silence is the canvas for great sounds. So too in gaming. Knowing when to cast a spell or when to let the fighter finish it
@TheRobversion1
@TheRobversion1 3 года назад
@@dhaas4698 multiple long rests in a day though is too much. makes casters too powerful. IMO a basic daily combat structure would be: 1st combat short rest 2nd combat catnap 3rd combat long rest if the dM just wants to make sure the casters burn more spells then simply add more enemies or up the difficulty of each combat.

Rogue Tank story idea: You're a ninja that is visited by your ancestors or "Ancestral Guardians". They curse you because they believe you are bringing shame to the family name. The curse is some kind of Oni/demon thing. Role play whatever you want , maybe you now have an ugly Oni faceor something else, but this is the reason you become a Barbarian. After a while they see that you are on the path to honor and they begin to help you in battle. Grandpa doesn't get an axe to the face, he catches or parties it because he was a badass samurai. After some more time they see that you are using your rogueish ways to help your friends (finding and disarming traps for example) and they lift part of ugly part part of your curse and you continue to hone your ninja ways with the help of your ancestors. A ninja mountain dwarf may be a little weird. A regular thief, and a different kind of curse, but you get the idea. Colby, I'd love to see that Shadow Blade build that you were talking about before. If I may: Don't worry about comments about your damage reports. Many people will not listen to caveats, no matter how much you emphasize them. People will learn more by consistently applying the metric you use, even if it's a bit flawed [Source: me. I teach statistics for a living]. If they want a different metric they're welcome to invent one, and in doing so, move the art of optimizing D&D characters incrementally forward, but your videos are really about character creation, so you shouldn't worry about whether your metrics are perfect or not, just use them consistently, as you've been doing all along. Also, I think your metrics are great - you've done a nice job of making easy, medium, and hard, level-appropriate encounters. Obviously none of those encounters is actually going to occur as-is, but there is no "standard" encounter, so your physical-based ones are great. I will suggest that your choice of a dragon as a physical attacker may be what's giving your viewers issues. People don't think of dragons as physical attackers, they think of them as breath-weapon-users. Anyway, keep up the great work, I love seeing your creative builds, and I love that you start with a problem you're trying to solve and make a build to do that. You could get more armor class or HP some other way and have "bigger numbers", but it would all be for nothing. You do a great job of making the most effective optimized builds, which is what anyone would actually want to play.

Versus Thieves Tools being available to anyone. Bards love that stuff. Then thematically the Party rubs off on you and you abandon your barbaric ways. - Also this depends on how evil your GM is. Getting Magic Missiled in the face starts to really sting without Totem barb.

Elf instead of Dwarf, with backstory that at the age of 20 (reminder, Elves are generally not considered adults until 100) they were kidnapped by slavers, brainwashed, and spent the next century or thereabouts helping the slavers break other slaves (Rogue 1 Expertise goes to Insight and Intimidation, and I'd use the Tasha's duplicate weapon proficiencies rules to start with whip proficiency to reflect this). I'm still debating Rogue subclass (Phantom has flavor, Scout has maneuverability, Mastermind has massive party support, or Swash has appeal as well). AG would be to reconnect and deal with their guilt.

What are your thoughts on replacing the Ancestral Guardian 6 with Rune Knight 7? You don't gain the b/p/s resistance until 7th level, but the Cloud and Storm runes are amazing tank abilities that come back on short rest, and Runic Shield is another great tank ability. Losing out on Unarmed Defense is a major blow, but you don't need to be raging for all the tank abilities to work, which means you can cast spells during combat. The abilities also get spent a lot quicker if you don't get any short rests in. (e: plus, You do get an extra ASI, and don't need the 13 strength, so that might somehow make up for not having unarmed defense.)

any particular role you have in mind? tank, striker? a themed build for example i'd do with this is infiltrator 3, tempest cleric 2, rogue x. Get that one big hit in with your lightning launcher, add the sneak attack and maximize all of that dmg with tempest cleric (yes you maximize the sneak attack dmg too since your sneak attack in this instance is lightning dmg).

I disagree with your rogue choice though. I did zealot/swash myself and that's because survivability and also getting that sneak attack without needing an ally nearby is awesome. Otherwise your taking a whole subclass for one spell and 2 cantrips. Swash gives you way more even without the charisma score. You can disengage as part of your attack and STILL have your bonus action free for cunning action.

In defense of the conceptual side of alternating levels when you multiclass, for me it comes down to how you look at it. On the one hand, you could view it as X levels of class Y and Z levels of class (didn't think this through when I started at X) A. That does feel a bit odd if you're alternating. The other way to look at it is in planning out your build, you're essentially constructing a new "class" that consists of a mixture of abilities from the classes you selected, so a fighter 10 wizard 10 is really a fighter-wizard 20, and whatever order you gain those abilities in the process is just the natural progression your character goes through. I can't imagine in the in-game world, characters are sitting around talking about taking a 5th level of fighter before multiclassing into sorcerer; they're just a mage knight, spellsword, or some other term that would be associated with the skillset combining those classes would represent. This character's rogue barbarian mix could represent a scout, or it could be explained away as some synonym for rogue with the caveat of desperately needs anger management classes.
@TheRobversion1
@TheRobversion1 3 года назад
x3000. your character in game doesn't know his a fighter 2, cleric 2, ranger 1. He doesn't know he's taking a ranger level next level up. All he know is he's improving his martial skills, training to be more at home in the wild or building a stronger connection to his god. his multiclass is basically his own personal take on his archetype. People should really stop pigeon-holing themselves into classes and think of themselves as unique archetypes. Each class just provides a suite of abilities you should be able to mix and match as you please as you build your own character. much like when people build their backstory and borrow from different concepts/ideas/fiction.
@Tomrash
@Tomrash 3 года назад
This. It bugged me to no end how he went back and forth trying to explain his levels. This charakter is not Rogue 1, Barbarian X and devinately not just defined by what class he took last... he is a very angry stabby guy who can do some lockpicking. And whatever else he is depends on you. And while we are at the topic of rage: If you wanna play into both classes archetypes, your rage could even be calm anger, the charakter just staring others down and the enemy just knowing he is pissed without him having to scream and shout.

honest feedback: there is something fundamentally wrong if a build does all it should do at tier 3 (lvl 11) Most of the games finish by level 10 and for myself, an Adventurers League player, the build basically says this is no rogue, this is a barbarian with a 1 lvl dip into a rogue (what is nothing to out of the box). It would have been interesting to suggest ancestral 3, rogue 7 so you pop rage and soft taunt in the two hard encounters and use blurr in easier ones. I understand the optimization point of view but you should try to do one or two episodes where optimization = how soon can this build get online? Otherwise, some optimizer can say, yeah your optimum is at lvl 11 but I came up with this thing that has a smaller local optima at 6 that is somewhat weaker but brings me much more fun waaay earlier than yours. tl:dr: From a theory craft point of view, this channel is great. From a practical one, builds should ideally be online at tier 2 (from levels 5 to 10)
@TheRobversion1
@TheRobversion1 3 года назад
This is how i theorycraft as well. builds should be completely online by level 10 at the latest ( as my own table finishes around level 12-14 in most campaigns). I also never build around spells that are higher than 4th level or class abilities that are acquired past level 8 as i feel the build isn't experienced soon enough. my own suggestion would be put out a complete build by level 10 then for final thoughts/dmg reports what could possibly be added as the pc heads into tier 3/4.

Rules as Written, (as you like to use to be able to hit the most tables), sneak attack requires a finesse weapn, but does not say it requires you to be using dex, and rage bonus damage only requires you to be using your strength on a weapon attack. Even with a lower strength, you may still be better off attacking with strength to benefit from both sneak attack and rage, and maybe ever reckless attack to give yourself advantage each turn. Nothing against anything you said here, just informing these numbers could be even higher for damage output.

I would actually just leave the str score at 13. Using point buy, it costs 2 points to go from 13 to 14, so you could raise any other ability score by 2 points between range of 8-13. I'd rather have +1 to wisdom or int/cha saves than +1 to athletics and weapon attacks I'm not using.
