The 2012 Alan Fraser Piano Institute held at Smith College, Northampton MA brought ten pianists together for a week's intensive work designed to create a breakthrough in their piano technique. Feldenkrais lessons every day, lectures, and of course, work at the piano. This excerpt zeroes in on the role of the arm in piano playing. Great advice Allen, thanks! “when the finger goes down, my arm moves up a millimeter”. This advice makes you aware of the inter-dependance of all the parts of the playing apparatus. Paying attention to it prevents excessive pressing into the pianokeys I noticed. My playing gets more elastic and the sound improves. I also noticed that I sat too close to the piano, with the upper-and forearm in a 90 degree angle. This locks me up. Now I sit further away, and now the angle is more a 45-60 degree angle. The fingers are now in better contact with the arm and keys. Correct me if I’m wrong!

Some of this stuff seems pretty strange. I'm sure a physical therapist could help you in explaining what goes on

It seems strange to you because you are not familiar with the Feldenkrais point of view. We offer a less mechanical view of human movement than physical therapy, and so we have different ideas in many cases, including this one.
