I know it's older but this video is still relevant. I recently just bought a brand new 18238 in 18K yellow brand new. It has the sunburst stick dial, and the diamond model was available. However I could not pass up the chance to have a new President 18238 vs pre owned. I do like the end links on the new models, however the 18238 in my opinion is much more elegant and sleek wearing than the new pieces. All the polished surfaces on the new models were brushed back in the day. Except the case sides. Less shiny. The lugs are slimmer and it wears less bulky. I love them both, however I would rather own a new 18238 than the new current model. The clasp is where the new model really shines. Other than that I would find the absolute best pre-owned version you can find. Or buy new. You really want to experience this watch when you purchase it as close to new condition as possible. And double quickest of course. However I would not pass on a single quicker model that was NOS condition either. They are just getting very hard to find and actually buy for a fair number. Once you get these Presidents soft and wonky, you can get them cleaned up and put back right by a real pro, however once you pay the man, and waited for months on end, you will wish you had just bought an excellent example in the first place. P. S. That diamond dial with baguettes at 6 and 9 is the truth! Other than one of the exotic dials, that particular diamond dial and the stick dials are my favorites. Keep em coming Archie
26/8/2017... Today I just bought myself a Rolex 118238 yellow gold President with the champagne/ diamond dial plus the diamond bezel... feels so satisfied about it... never been so happy... enjoying every moment wearing it
I just bought a mint 18248 yellow gold bark finish watch and love it. My next one will be a 118239 WG DD .. 2 watches for the cost of one new DD 40mm,now to me that makes more sense.
go 118238, it has about 20% more gold, and weight is what the day date is all about. it wears a lot more substantially on the wrist and also has a much better bracelet and clasp - solid end links, solid center links & machined hidden clasp.

A bit bored, snowing here, so doing some research on the 18238 I own in yellow gold with the MOP Serti dial. You always make me smile with your over the top reviews, but gotta say the Valium, or perhaps the thorazine enema you took prior to filming this vid worked on every level. Truly sounds like you know your stuff when you dumb-down the high intensity emotions. Great job Archie, Paul, Andy Kaufman, or whoever you really are. Cheers and be well...
I disagree. This is not an old mans watch. I purchased a new one with the champagne/ diamond dial plus the diamond bezel and I am not even 25 years old yet. Its not an everyday wear watch of course but its definitely the best out of the collection.
Hello My Friend, You Are The Only One On RU-vid That Has Given A Proper Review Of The 36mm Gold Day Date President. No One Has Mentioned The Difference In The Size Of The Dial And Weight. The One On The Left Is A 18238 (Which I Own) The One On The Right Is A 118238 (Which My Friend Owns) , Although Both Are Considered To Be 36mm The Are Obviously Different In Size And Weight.
I was wondering wow this guy not cursing any more and sound so so good, and finally you said it oh ......but you did good bro you really tried your best and your advise was very very good. I think you used f word only twice, I would use it too and do a lot but on youtube I mean you should refrain. i'm diamond and watch jeweler in Qatar and just got in to rolex and I love it.
re: the stretch, this also happens cos most people wear their day dates like a loose hanging bracelet - which ultimately removes microns of gold every time you hear metal on metal clanking. wear it tight and it will preserve the bracelet even more, as well as not looking like a complete tosser
Nice commentary, Archie! You really are a performer because the guy in the video was completely different from the normal abrasive Archie Luxury. Well done. Why aren't you in luxury sales for fuck's sakes?!
Gold mix used in newer President is much stronger, than in 80s, and before, but gold is really bat material for wristwatch.Steel and Titanium will last you a lifetime, but gold only in your safe.
There is only one hot watch at this time: day-date 2. The smaller one day-date is history. It was good 40 years ago. Right now the small 36 mm is for women and for guys with a 5-6 inch wrist. End of discussion "fuckers" :)
