abkco.lnk.to/L...
"Dear Doctor" by The Rolling Stones
Composers: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Lyrics:
Oh help me, please doctor, I'm damaged
There's a pain where there once was a heart
It's sleepin', it's a beatin'
Can't ya please tear it out, and preserve it
Right there in that jar?
Oh help me, please mama, I'm sick'ning
It's today that's the day of the plunge
Oh the gal I'm to marry
Is a bow-legged sow
I've been soakin' up drink like a sponge
"Don't ya worry, get dressed, " cried my mother
As she plied me with bourbon so sour
Pull your socks up, put your suit on
Comb your long hair down,
For you will be wed in the hour
So help me, please doctor, I'm damaged
There's a pain where there once was a heart
I'm sleepin, it's a beatin'
Can't ya please take it out, and preserve it
Right there in that jar?
Oh help me, please doctor, I'm damaged
There's a pain where there once was a heart
It's sleepin, it's a beatin'
Can't ya please tear it out, and preserve it
Right there in that jar?
I was tremblin', as I put on my jacket
It had creases as sharp as a knife
I put the ring in my pocket
But there was a note
And my heart it jumped into my mouth
It read, "Darlin', I'm sorry to hurt you.
But I have no courage to speak to your face.
But I'm down in Virginia with your cousin Lou
There be no wedding today."
So help me, please doctor, I'm damaged
You can put back my heart in its hole
Oh mama, I'm cryin'
Tears of relief
And my pulse is now under control

I think this song is their first foray into country music. The lyrics are hilarious here.... It is a joke as Mick literally asks a doctor to put his heart in a jar. It has a drunken country blues feel to it that I really love and it shows for the first time The Stones were as good as any other writing and singing country music.

The thing about Beggar's Banquet--the album this cut comes from--is that it was the Stones' response to the Beatles' Sergeant Peppers. They finally said screw it, we're not going to keep trying to be Lennon/McCartney clones, we're going back to our roots, we're going to make the music we love. In the process they rescued rock & roll from being only about sophisticated pop music, and made it safe to explore blues/country/roots music again.

Actually, they first put out Their Satanic Majesties Request, which was basically their attempt at copying Sgt Peppers, from the music, to the lyrics, right down to the album cover. After a lack of critical acclaim for the album, they then put out Beggars Banquet, going back to their roots.

I'm 68 and I got this album probably the first day it came out when I was 13. I have been iistening to Beggars Banquet a lot recently. I finally figured out why it so great. There is only one guitarist on this record, the only Stones album ever. Keith and Mick working toghether, backed by Charlie, Bill, and most of all Nicky Hopkins. I disagree with a previous poster. Brian Jones had virtually nothing to do with this album. He was so stoned and drunk (and he couldn't handle his drugs like Keith could). Brian either didn't show up at the studio for the recordings, or was so out of it that he just laid on the floor with his guitar strapped to him and did nothing except maybe play some maraccas. Before the Stones hired Mick Taylor (so great). One guitarist. Think about it.

Brian plays the harmonica on this song. Also, Brian plays guitar on No Expectations, and also rhythm acoustic on Parachute Woman. He also plays sitar & tanpura on Street Fightin' Man, and mellotron on Jig-Saw Puzzle. Let it Bleed is the album he had not much to do with.

FIRSTLY, thank you! ABKCOVEVO, that's a great video of a great song. I note that the lyrics of the pull-down menu here disagree with the lyric in the video itself. The song actually says, "AS SHE PLIED ME WITH BOURBON SO SOUR" but I don't think that the RU-vid format here will allow you to edit it now that it's been posted, will it? -I don't know. -Please do let me know. Many thanks & regards, Tony

Someone said the Stones started out as a Rythm and Blues Band. Ne Ne...Alexis Corner, John Mayhall, Fleetwood Mac all took the Black Blues from Mississippi and Arkansas and began the British Blues Invasion. They all were in and out of Alexis Corner, Mayhall and other Older guy's groups stepping up the raw Blues of the South. There would have been no Blues without Gospel from where these black men backslid into the Honkey Tonk Clubs..Robert Johnson, Mississippi Fred McDowell and on. Then the British Blues, Rock and Roll, Rythm and BluesCountry and Rockabilly. Next Heavy Metal, Thrash Rock, Punk .Then sorrows came with no talent RAP REFUSE

Stones started out as rhythm and blues, not really country. Got first single and first lp they ever made. Early records are epic and they were and still are the best ever.

I always wonder about Ian Stewart-the Stone's loyal, and very gifted piano player....he was always running errands, a fixer of sorts, then the Stones bring in Nicky Hopkins. Seems a bit sad.
@paulsnider9208
@paulsnider9208 5 лет назад
Part of the reason for that was that Stewart actually refused to play on a lot of their tracks-- he was a purist & felt much of their self-penned material strayed too far from the fundamentals of the blues & boogie-woogie he cherished... Hopkins had no such issue. Still, it WAS sad that Andrew Loog Oldham determined that Stewart didn't have the "look" of the Stones & encouraged them to sideline him. Either way, Stewart was loyal to the Stones' cause til the very end. A first-rate barrelhouse piano player, you could sometimes hear his parts live, but they kept him hidden from public view...

They were also influenced by a pianist friend of Brian Jones parents, who taught Brian, and speny=t a lot of time at one point at his farm in Slimbridge, Gloucestershire. The parties were notorious and the village had never seen the like before. I think his name was Joe, classic pianist who taught in Cheltenham. RIP Charlie Watts today, what a legcy
