All the glory of this song goes to Merry Clayton. This tired, pregnant woman dragged herself out of bed in the middle of the night to record the most powerful backing track in history. I wish I could thank her personally.

Merry's singing is unsurpassed but the glory of the record has to go to Keith Richards, who wrote the music, did the arrangement and played both guitar parts, which drive the song.

I give her all credit to this song. For what she went through after the recording with her miscarriage,I don't think they ever proved her miscarriage was caused by this but they have always believed it was.

@@smokingthereefer92 Her singing is what made the record memorable, but it would still be a classic without it. Its like Ruby Tuesday as an example. Brian Jones' recorder/flute playing is brilliant, but it would still be a great song if he hadn't played.

I must have watched this video 10 times already. It's the most real reaction I've seen from anyone. I know the song is a reflection of the times, Vietnam, civil rights, protests and so on but I think Leo, normally goofy and funny, is taking it in a whole different and very personal reaction for him. Fascinating and impactful to watch.

Arguably The Rolling Stones’ best song. Amazing guitar layering that they’re known for.. But it’s Merry Clayton’s outstanding backing/duet vocals that make this song IMO. The Stones’ producer called a pregnant, sleeping Merry Clayton in the middle of night to come lay down vocals; she arrived with curlers in her hair and nailed those crazy lyrics in 2 takes🔥 Sadly her attempt at launching a successful solo career never manifested. But her powerhouse vocal on this track will forever stand the test of time. 👏🏼

"Gimme Shelter" is a masterpiece. Powerful then, and powerful now. One of my all time favorite Stones songs. Mick Jagger said this about the song in a 1995 interview with Rolling Stone magazine: "Well, it's a very rough, very violent era. The Vietnam War. Violence on the screens, pillage and burning. And Vietnam was not war as we knew it in the conventional sense. The thing about Vietnam was that it wasn't like World War II, and it wasn't like Korea, and it wasn't like the Gulf War. It was a real nasty war, and people didn't like it. People objected, and people didn't want to fight it ... That's a kind of end-of-the-world song, really. It's apocalypse; the whole record's like that." And sadly Merry Clayton had a miscarriage after singing this.

This is one that the story of the making of the song is just about as fascinating as the song itself. Lots of legends about it, some true, some not. Even the people there have told conflicting versions over the last 50 years. That said it is one of the most iconic Stones songs and most prolific protest songs ever written.

Moonlight Mile is my favorite Rolling Stones song, it is a beautiful song (there is a really touching movie of the same name that came out back in the late 90's early 2000's?? that I really enjoyed). I have been lucky enough to see the stones live, it was brilliant!

The Rolling Stones thought so much of Gimme Shelter they made a whole movie based on the recording of the song and the U.S. tour that was happening at the same time. It ends at the infamous free concert at Altamont Speedway in December 1969, where four people died, including one on-screen murder, and three babies were born. The young lady, at the time, who does the Rape, Murder line, Mary Clayton, is the sister of Little Feat Conga player and sometime Vocalist Sam Clayton. Great reaction dude.

Mick, when asked about this song, replied that it was a "very rough, very violent era." Kennedy had been killed earlier in the decade, there were lots of demonstrations going on and at Kent state some protesting students were killed by the National Guard. Fifty thousand (!) American soldiers' lives were lost in that war. People were angry.

So they decided to have a woman sing the "rape murder" part because it was so much more impactful. Look up The Rolling Stones at The Altamont Speedway. They hired Hell's Angels as security and it did not go well.
@LeGrandSarrazin
@LeGrandSarrazin 3 года назад
From what I remember of the story, it goes that when they hired the Hell’s Angels for the concert, they had mistaken the criminal biker gang for the casual British motorcycle club, also called Hell’s Angels. While they thought they were just gettin a couple tough guys for show, they ended up getting a band of felons. They seemingly had no idea who it was they had hired and it was an unmitigated disaster. Although it was an honest mistake they were associated together for some time and had the positive and negative effect of making them seem darker and more dangerous than they were trying to be. Which made the parents more afraid of, and the kids fall even more in love with, them. Wild times, indeed!

The promoters hired the security, not the stones. Apparently the payment was beer, don't know if that's totally true but it sounds about right.

I feel he is saying "children" meaning us.. the youngsters he was talking to at the time.. it was what.. 1969 or 1970 when that song came out.. times were different.. instead of "dudes" it was "cats"...man, that cat was really tripping hard.. I don't think he meant literal children. What is so bad-ass about this song is the lady who sang her ass off.. 9 months pregnant in the middle of the night. I saw an interview with her where she said... "I'm fixing to blow the roof off of this place".. and she did just that. Remarkable!!!
