“Sittin’ On A Fence” by The Rolling Stones
Composers: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Lyrics:
Since I was young I've been very hard to please
And I don't know wrong from right
But there is one thing I could never understand
Some of the sick things that a girl does to a man, so
I'm just sittin' on a fence
You can say I got no sense
Trying to make up my mind
Really is too horrifying
So I'm sittin’ on a fence
All of my friends at school grew up and settled down
And they mortgaged up their lives
One things not said too much, but I think it's true
They just get married 'cause there's nothing else to do, so
I'm just sittin' on a fence
You can say I got no sense
Trying to make up my mind
Really is too horrifying
So I'm sittin on a fence
I'm just sittin' on a fence
You can say I got no sense
Trying to make up my mind
Really is too horrifying
So I'm sittin’ on a fence
The day can come when you get old and sick and tired of life
You just never realize
Maybe the choice you made wasn't really right
But you go out and you don't come back at night, so
I'm just sittin' on a fence
You can say I got no sense
Trying to make up my mind
Really is too horrifying
So I'm sittin’ on a fence

"I'm still sittin' on a fence. You can say I got no sense. Trying to make up my mind really is too hard a find. So I'm sittin' on a fence." The songs you love most passionately are the ones that express your life experience. The above 4 lines have been my existence ever since I can remember. This song is so beautifully poignant in the depiction of how life can be so overwhelming that you choose paralysis because you just don't know which path to take. The sad thing is that sometimes indecision is better than the tragic or mundane choices one makes out of apathy, fear, or confusion. It's criminal that this song didn't make it onto Aftermath. They could have trimmed a few minutes off of Goin' Home and added this gem.

They're past the Chicago blues worship, writing their own songs, and haven't yet got locked into the riff-rock of the post-Satanic Majesty's era that has endured since. I just love this kind of nasty folk they did, Child of the Moon, Ruby Tuesday, lasted all of a year or two.

Paul McCartney, of that OTHER band, said a few months ago that The Stones were just a blues cover band, and that HIS former band offered music evocative of a broader pallet of musical genres and cultures. His late mate, John Lennon, never tired of saying that The Stones simply aped what The Fabs had done six months earlier. This is The Stones in their chamber pop/baroque pop mode (which includes songs like "As Tears Go By" and "Backstreet Girl" among many others), which characterized much of their deep-track work in the late-'64 to mid-'66 period, even as they continued to put out a steady stream of blues-based hard rock numbers and before they moved into their brief psychedelic phase (approximately fall '66 to late '67). Can any Beatles fans tell me which Beatles songs or modes, exactly, "Sittin' On a Fence" copies? I never want to disrespect The Fabs (though The Stones will always be my favorite band, sorry, Beatlemaniacs), but I for one am sick and tired of them being put down as pale imitators of The Fabs.

The interplay of Keith and Brian's acoustic guitars is simply magic. Brian plays the repeating "lead" pattern while Keith strums an ever-changing pattern of "rhythm" chords behind it. @@michaelgaskell7408 If you take a look at the early concert-Videos of the Stones with Brian Jones, you can see, that this is very basic stuff what he is playing on guitar, if he plays at all. Keith Richards plays all lead parts and guitar solos. Brains knowledge of the instruments he played was seldom more than beginner-level. Listening to the song again, I wouldn't wonder, if Keith played both guitars, they both sound like him and he often recorded all guitar-parts of the songs himself.
@richardbanker3910
@richardbanker3910 Месяц назад
@@karlwanninger7675This is a tricky one as I wonder if there is more than one guitar at work here but I’d agree that the one that dances around is likely to be Keith. I think that in the Charlie is My Darling film, you see Mick and Keith roughing out the song. Two thirds the way through, you hear a harpsichord and that is Brian at work. Trying to be fair. Brian’s best guitar work was slide guitar, Bo Diddley styled Mona as well as “guitar weaving “ with Keith as Keith says in his book Life. This song may be Keith and Brian’s guitar weaving at work.

I believe Brian plays the lead figure here. If you listen it is very much a Brian Jones part: Repetitive, and in a baroque style. Note for instance the solo moment is literally the riff repeated - which is what Brian did on lead parts on songs like Lady Jane (the dulcimer acting as lead theee), or the slide on No Expectations - the solo there, like here, is the riff repeated. If it were Keith on lead, I think the solo might be a bit more interesting.

@@Bklyn93 Can you cite any examples of Brian playing anything like this? It has Keith Richards classic faux baroque written all over it. Straight out of the same mind that created As tears go By, Sweet Lady Jane and the piano on Ruby Tuesday. Brian never played anything like this and certainly never on an acoustic guitar. The solo is not purely a repeat of the main accompaniment theme...It resolves into a much more baroque flair reminiscent of a Bach etude. This could not possibly be Brian Jones playing the lead accompaniment in this song. He just wasn't capable of it . The idea of American blue grass feel resolving into baroque musical figures as is done in the solo has Keith's musical irony and wit.

This was never released in the UK for many, many years. They gave this song to a duo called Twice As Much on Andrew Oldham's Immediate label. It was a minor hit in the UK.
