This album stayed on my turntable for six months. When I saw them on July 13, 1978, they played every song from the album - except Some Girls. Summer of 78 ruled.
After this album came out, Saturday Night Live had Garrett Morris (who was the one black cast member) do a guest editorial on the Weekend Update segment. He comes on saying he heard that the song says certain things about black girls, and he is very concerned, and “I just have this to say to you, Mr. Jagger…. where can I find these girls?” 😂😂😂
@@mr.brenman2132 I'd say The Who were the most raucous stage band, they invented the nasty stage performance. Their signature moves and destructive performances have been copied by many bands many times over.
@@alphajava761 B.S. Nothing the Who ever did would be cancelable by today's standards. The stones had two decades of offensive material. The real bad boys.
One of my first LP's bought back in the day with my paper route money. Still have it. Thanks for the reaction and making me remember how good it is! BTW your subs is nearing 31k! Grats. You guys deserve allot more subs that for sure.
Yeah, that's a bunch of men on the cover, the band members. One thing people don't talk about much is the Stones' sense of humor. Other songs like Far Away Eyes, Factory Girl, and Jigsaw Puzzle are songs that showcase their humor. By the late 70s, the band had branched out into new territories, genres and instrumentally as well. It really comes out in the backbeat Watts and Whyman lay down, with lots of funk, soul, jazz, and even rock and punk. Listen to Watt's drum playing on Miss You, very tasty and jazzy. GREAT stuff. You would do yourselves a service if you went from Black and Blue (one of my favorite Stones albums) to Tattoo You. ALL great stuff. Keep going down that hole; it's a deep one.
The cover of the original vinyl album had die cast cutouts of the women’s faces, and the dust jacket inside had the faces of The Rolling Stones members along with some female celebrities such as Lucille Ball, Judy Garland, and Raquel Welch. The images of the celebrities were used without permission so they had to change the art to remove the womens’ faces for subsequent pressings. So what you’re seeing on the cover here is the revised cover with the women’s faces removed, and all that’s left is The Rolling Stones.
@@danmayberry1185 With all the great music available at the time, along with a smorgasbord of fantastic concerts, I couldn't care less about music I wasn't into and never listened to, even if lots of other people were buying and enjoying it.
I'm not really a big fan of the Stones, but this album is one of my all time favorites. "Respectable", "Miss You", and "Shattered" are all great tracks.
Agreed. I hope they will find a good live version of Miss You with Bobby Keys (sax). The horns section is killer. The entire pace of the song is fire! Man, they know how to work a big stage!
One of their best records. As far as pure funk goes, I would recommend their Black& Blue record, start off with "Hey Negrita". Another banger from the BEST channel.
The Stones sense of humor comes thru on this one, as it does on Far Away Eyes, Miss You and Shattered. Such a great album. Love when you guys review the Stones, La and Che---you get the intensity of the music. Thanks!
This tour was my first concert I ever attended. Anaheim Stadium, festival seating, 70,000 + people, the Stones were 5 hours late, the good old days! I believe the ticket was $9.50.
Loving that you two are digging deeper into the treasure trove of Stones songs. There's so much more to hear from this band - please don't stop. You've only scratched the surface, believe me.
@@flyingburritobro68 Yes I meant he released it as a response. Of course could be several interpretations but in a throw away line Mick said something like maybe it was an apology for some girls. But he also said it was about a friend could be a man or woman. He liked fucking around.
With the addition of Ronnie Wood in the mid 70's the Stones got a booster shot of attitude! Check out the rest of this album, as every song is a boozy, up all night good time!
By the time this album came out in 1978, the Stones’ popularity had faded a bit with some people (not me!) for a variety of reasons and other genres of music like punk and disco had pretty much taken over. But, this record (first to feature guitarist Ronnie Wood) reminded people what the band was all about and is worth checking out in it’s entirety. That’s blues musician Sugar Blue on harmonica, by the way.
@@tonytony5380Ronnie had been a guest guitarist on both Black and Blue and It's Only Rock and Roll, but this was his first album as a member of the band. He'd only appeared on maybe 3-4 tracks on the prior two albums.
@@tonytony5380Actually, it was the third Stones album that Wood played on (“It’s Only Rock and Roll” was the other), but he wasn’t a full member of the band during any of those recording sessions. That’s why I said “featured”, guess I should’ve been more specific.
Some Girls definitely stands out, along with a few other albums, as part of Summer 1978. As a 13 yr old, "some Puerto Rican girls is just dyin'' to meet you..." this line got me.
The Stones understood that sometimes, or most of the time, rock music should be fun and dirty and obnoxious, with no socially redeeming value. I love that approach.
Great one guys! I was so happy to see this one come up. People were dismissive of this album when it came out. Several of its songs are great live. How about that harmonica! Mick was a busy man on this one. Thanks you both, as always.
@@frankmirra8243 My only reference (other than reading the liner notes 45 years ago ha ha) is seeing Mick do it all several times live. It makes sense that somebody more proficient would do the album track. Sugar Blue must be such a person I will look into him. Thank you.
Former UN ambassador Andrew Young and Garret Morris asked Mick Jagger on SNL "Where can we find these black girls"? at least if memory serves me correctly
My buddy had a gold trans am and he temporarily took the decals off. It was the coolest looking car I've ever seen. I tried to convince him to leave it that way but he wouldn't do it.😆
Probably not their best LP overall (Exile) but happens to be my favorite. Was just coming of age around that time (14-15 yrs or so) so it hit harder than some of the earlier stuff for me. Also, came out during the disco era and was refreshing to get a good solid high-quality rock n roll LP. I think they'd love 'Shattered' from this one which is a personal fav & almost has an early hip hop vibe🔥
totally agree! they thought these lyrics were fun (to some relief out here, probably, to be honest, lol), wait till they hear Mick unload on New York City on the same album!
The parent advisory stickers came on about ten years after this album was released. For more of Jagger's riffing, check out "Miss You" and "Shattered" from this same album.
The faces on the Some Girls cover are actually the Stones and the blank faces were celebrity women that were on the original released cover that were removed because of legal issues.... The original cover is a collectable and worth $$$$$
Always love this song, but it may be the weakest track on the album. You guys should just do the entire Some Girls album. Came out in 1978, a sort of comeback for the Stones after a few albums that were not so well received (but I love everyone). This album has it all, disco, rock, punk, country, etc, etc. One of their best and most beloved albums. The title track- Some Girls is a good blues, a little raunchy, but all done in good fun.
Look closely at that album cover. It's a wig advertisement and they put Mick, Keith, Charlie, and Bill's faces over the girl's faces. They actually got sued by the wig manufacturer for copyright infringement. And... they got a lot of shit from women's groups over the lyrics!
From the last great Stones album. From the 1980s onward, they've been pretty much just cashing it in. This whole album is a stone cold classic and it's as good as anything from the late 60s.
I mean is it really realistic that a band can put out great albums for 20 to 30 years without some decline? No one else comes close to the string of great albums as the Stones but people expected them to excel without any decline in the face of a continually changing musical landscape. They still have done it longer and better than anyone.
@@roberttompkins6489 absolutely. They are still making good music. This is still their last perfect album. Honestly, that they could do this 15 years into their career is still very impressive.
I saw them touring this LP at Soldier Field in Chicago 1978. I remember thinking at the time > these guys have been around a long time..they probably can’t keep it going much longer
Beatles couldn't be cute forever, the Who couldn't be angry, angsty teenagers forever but sleaze is ageless. Check out them doing Stray Cat Blues or Sister Morphine.
@@marymargaretmoore9034 had that on a turntable once when my Mom was cleaning house... She dropped a heavy lamp right on the record, looked me dead in the eyes and said "whoops".
I remember my mom and I getting into a big fuss about this album. lol She made me swear to not buy this album because my best friend's mother had heard this song and had my friend swear, she wouldn't listen to it either. lol😂 I believe I was around 22yrs old when I bought the album. (Of course I heard the song from visiting friends anyway) But this secific album isn't regarded as one of their biggest. Fun listen thanks 4 sharing
Great, poignant song..... Mick gets downright dirty about those women! Here's a track listing....check them all out! "Miss You" "When the Whip Comes Down" "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)" "Some Girls" "Lies" "Far Away Eyes" "Respectable" "Before They Make Me Run" "Beast of Burden" "Shattered" I only have 1 Stones album, and this one's it...one of my favorites!
Just f.y.i.: "parental advisory labels" (**ahem-ahem-couch: BULLshit!-cough-cough🤦🤦**) didn't exist until: midway through 1990 (or, possibly I slipped, it might, even, have been 1991🤷, but).... Some Girls was recorded in 1977 (finished in early '79s, actually) and released in 1978. Such things weren't, even, remotely being discussed, or considered, then! ...and: the attitude towards women, overall: idiotic, inhuman and puerile. ...complaining about how YOU've been 'fucked over'🙄 by people you've, just, fucked over, or, at the most: care, abosltely NOTHING about and consider as disposable as dirty socks or disposable drink glasses ???? ...not very astute or "witty." A bit of "a rock star gets to complain about everything because he's a rock star" syndrome. ...🙄🙄.🤷🤷 --However: This album is GREAT! Their 2nd album with Ron Wood sharing the guitar slot (I guess, really, his first "full" album-if you want to think of it that way....). ...and: The Rolling Stones (by this point: "the old men on the rock 'n' roll farm"!): dealing with a, relative, sense of "irrelevance/"old-timer-ism" ...due to: the (brief, yet: currently -at the moment that THIS album was created and released!- unavoidable (and undeniable!)) dominance of: disco, the rise of punk as a (then, at this moment briefly; withing a decade+: more solidly and fully) "fresh nearly overwhelming!) kid on the block" musical style and energy and, actually: The Stones finding ways to incorporate those things (plus a few others) into their personal repertoire on this album and shew that: despoiler their having been around a whole., that they were, still, more than just "relevant" ...but: campanile of "swinging a dick with the new elephants on the block," basically! ...They., even, made the transition into the '80s with their follow-up: Tattoo You, but, yes: there is no way to argue that Tattoo You comes anywhere CLOSE to the: energy, "juice," relevance or overall fun of: Some Girls. Truly: a legendary Stones album and: it deserves to be.
You think THESE lyrics were fun (and they were, lol, altho, yeah, a bit spicy and, well, pun intended, , RACY, even for 1978!), wait till you hear Mick go off on New York City in "Shattered"! Over another strong, groovy foundation! We will look forward to seen' you guys dig that!
🤔 You guys should check out Kieth's Band, The Expensive Winos. Got to see shows in NYC while he was here working on Chuck Berry Movie he produced. Keith & Chuck were LETHAL on stage together. Chuck played New Years shows in NY evry year! 😏 Him, Grace Jones & Sam Kinison were my New Years staple shows since they went on after we were done with the MTV NYrs Surprise Band played. 🤩 I miss the old NYC! 😁🥰🐰
I believe the guitar effect Keith is using is a MXR Phase 90. There was also a 100, but I think 90. I also thought EVH used a Phase 90. Great song on a great album! 🤙
Please listen to ozzy Osborne 1981 live crazy train and mr.crowly I think you guys will like it.Back before randy Rhodes was Ozzies lead guitarist.Randy was considered one of the best on par with Eddie van halen.Randy was classical trained always learning.Check it out you guys won't be disappointed. And keep up the great work you Led zepplin heads...
As much as I love the Stones surprisingly I only actually owned 2 of their albums: Some Girls and Goat's Head Soup. Some Girls is fantastic. You must listen and hopefully react to Far Away Eyes. It's a real country hoot!
there was a time when the Stones sparked outright anger, with the band being accused of racism and sexism. While the band had quite a few drug busts to their name, it was the lyrics of some of their most famous tracks that drew particular outrage. On this day 43 years ago, on 6 October, 1978, one of their songs was branded racist and misogynist by a famous Black civil rights activist - and the chairman of their own record company. [ was this song..Some Girls]
I love yells show for so many reasons. You guys are just cool dudes and I feel kinship to people who have love and understanding of music. I love that comparison with the rap song. All of us as young dudes can't deny how music can play a part in shaping your attitudes with women. This came out when i was preteen. This was like " This what I'm in for ?" 😂😂.✌️❤ from KY
I have the Amsterdam original cover version with all the famous women still on the front and the album is orange vinyl. I was bummed when I checked eBay and saw many people have it. after printing a little bit of it, they had to stop and take the famous some girls pictures of famous women because they sued them. check with Wikipedia and you can see who the famous some girls on the cover were..
Lmfao, I've been waiting for your reaction to this nasty gem. I loved seeing your eyes get bigger as Mick spits out those lines. I remember hearing this on the radio when it first came out my senior year of HS 78. When it came to the you know what line, I couldn't believe my ears that the whole line slipped through uncensored!! ......I just don't have that much jam." Wow. It took em a few weeks to get that line censored a bit, but man, this was raw nasty Stones at their bluesiest and dirtiest. One of my big regrets ever was hearing a midnight FM radio announcement that the Stones were going to play in my town (ol St Loo) at a small 3000 seat theater in a few months when the rest of the Some Girls tour was going to be in bigger hockey arenas. Tickets on sale the next morning. It was close to graduation time etc, but instead of getting down to the Theater window to score a few tickets that next AM, I chickened out and went to school. Apparently people started forming an all night line right after the midnight radio announcement, and it was sold out the next morning within an hour or 2. So I missed one of the smallest and most intimate Stones shows in the 70s on an album that is hit after hit. Dammmmnnn.
