This is one of my top 5 songs ever. It was ahead of its time in 68 in many ways - a precursor to some of the harder rock to come in the following years by many other acts. The lyrics are genius. To me, it's the perfect telling of the story of the devil - whether you believe he's a real entity or just a character. I think the theme is summed up in the line "I shouted out "Who killed the Kennedys?", when after all, it was you and me." Politesse is a formal politeness - sort of the polish of the upper or political class. He mentions it's their "well-learned politesse" - the kind you're born and bred into in certain families or parts of society. Great reaction. I LOVE The Rolling Stones. I'd love to see you guys react to "Miss You", "Paint It Black", and/or "You Can't Always Get What You Want". You should still go down that Supertramp rabbit hole. :) Also, react to "Long Train Runnin'" by The Doobie Brothers when you can. You won't be sorry.

R.I.P. Charlie Watts. I've been a Stones fan since 1963-64. You guys need to listen to more Rolling Stones. This great song is from their great album "Beggars Banquet." Please also do "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" on their album "Sticky Fingers." btw, they didn't just kick Brian Jones "to the curb." He was fucking up big time, not going to rehearsals and playing poorly because he was so messed up on drugs.

This is one of the few rock songs that can be called truly scary. And outlandish, when you consider how many British Army veterans would have heard some kid singing about being a German general while the bodies stank. It would be like someone today singing about flying a jet into the World Trade Center for Allah.

The guy playing the conga is an African drummer who plays the ritual beat that supposed induce people into a trance. There is an original Rolling Stones video that RU-vid removed back in 2011 due to the Directors copyright complaint which fully displays exactly what the Rolling Stones intended for this song. The video is mocking the goings on in a a Holiness Church!!

Sympathy For The Devil is a political song ( all the events mentioned deaths of Jesus, czar, Kennedys). The song is from their most political album Begger's Banquet from 1968 ( Street Fighting Man, Salt Of The Earth). Rolling Stones performed Sympathy on their 1970 European tour and not again till 1975.

My God! The Rolling Stones man! They are one of the front runners of the best bands that have ever lived! Their lyrics and musicianship is outstanding and they are so undoubtedly phenomenal live! Mick and Keith just destroy everything they touch! Not one bad song period! They are icons for a reason and everyone knows the Stones! Their music influenced so many people it’s beyond belief! Too good to even count how many albums are pure perfection! My God to be around during that era had to be unbelievable! I’m so jealous of my mother who saw everyone and I mean everyone! As a double major in college and my second was theology, people need to realize Lucifer was Gods favorite son so people need to read sometimes. Just wouldn’t love humans…and can ya blame him??? Thanks for doing this as a tribute to Charlie Watts. As for the Stones themselves, they are fundamental, and Mick Jagger is an icon in the industry. Tbh, I didn't get beyond the hits with the Stones until later in life; they were a little too dirty and mean. But after I had lived a little experiencing both the ups and the downs of this life, their music started to resonate - I finally "got" them. Nowadays, I rarely listen to their hits, but they're part of my regular music rotation. The Mick Taylor era is their best. One day you should dive into it. You won't regret it.

As the French writer, Charles Baudelaire, warned in the 19th century, "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he doesn't exist"....and so it is in particular with western man who is blind to the reason of evil in our world.....As the always brilliant C.S. Lewis warned , there are 2 extremes when dealing with the fallen one...."One extreme is to have to a strong attraction to the King of darkness...the other extreme is to not even acknowledge his reality in our fallen world".....

The live version on Get Yer Ya Ya's Out is worth a listen for musicianship. Mick Taylor brings a whole different energy to the song. In essence I interpret the song as We as the human race have the devil in all of us. It is easy to blame satin for all the atrocities of the world on evil and not be accountable, but like Mick said in the song "who killed the Kennedy's when after all it was You and Me". Then in the last verse where Lucifer basically says "so if you meet me, have some courtesy, have some sympathy and some taste" meaning it was all us. I read that in the recording of this song Charlie stated that they did maybe three completely different sounding versions of this song, spending an entire day on each recording and decided on this one because of the percussions and how it flowed.

It seems that nobody in the comments section has the meaning or a close meaning of this songs lyrics. The Devil wants sympathy from mankind because he's been wrongly blamed for the evils of the world. He didn't do those horrible things, Pontius Pilot betraying Jesus, the murder of Czar Nicholas and his family when the Communists seize power of Russia, he rode a tank and held a general's rank as a Nazi when the Blitzkreig happened in WWII, he was there when JFK was assassinated but he says it was YOU AND ME. The Devil didn't do those things, man did those awful things to each other. He was present as the instigator and the force of evil that man already has in his soul. The Devil is telling mankind to give him a break, have some sympathy for him because he was just a player in the acts of evil throughout time. He was always there to see it happen and maybe to be the puppet master. But it is man who is truly evil not him. That's what I understand to be the actual meaning of the lyrics for Sympathy for the Devil.

My older sister is a humongous Rolling Stones fan, so I grew up literally listening to the Stones, so I knew my Stones lyrics pretty much before I knew my alphabet. I'm still a huge Stone fan. I think that they are far superior to the Beatles they have grit, guts, bravado, gravitas, and anything else you can think of. They have woven the fabric of my life.

Brian Jones played the maracas on this song. This was also the last studio album with Jones' picture. The band Psychic TV did a song in tribute to Brian Jones called "Godstar" (you should listen to it). Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman were the only members of the band who attended Brian's funeral. In the world of Beatles v Stones, I'm definitely on the Beatles end of the spectrum. But this song is one of the best songs of the entire 20th century, no doubt. I sometimes fantasize arranging it as a two-piano concerto. The whole song boils down to one line near the end: "I'll tell you one time: you're to blame." Humans invented this "devil" thing as a scapegoat to blame for the sh*t we ourselves do.

***TRUE STORY ALERT*** The background vocalists are actually Anita Pallenberg and her girlfriends, who claimed they were all part of a coven. They were in the booth with the sound engineer as the Stones were laying down tracks for this song. They spontaneously started chanting the “HOO HOO!” And the sound engineer liked it so much he punched them in so the band could hear what he was hearing, and the rest is history.

The story as I heard it is that their manager told them "If John and Paul" (Lennon and McCartney) "can write songs, so can you." He locked Mick and Keith in a room and said "don't come out until you've written a song." I don't know if that's true but it sure makes a good story! I do believe that if they had stayed a cover band they would have died of obscurity. The genius songwriting of Jagger and Richards propelled them to greatness. I suggest you try "You Can't Always Get What You Want" or "Gimme Shelter" (both please use the studio version - if you do "You Can't Always..." you'll instantly see why!)

Weighing in on Jagger: Mick and his father were both gymnasts, and he still practises some sort of exercise regime to keep in shape for concerts. Imo, I feel that Mick's vocalizations aren't that much of a reach for him; I've never seen footage of him where he seems to be straining. And, despite the fact that he's one of the most charismatic front-men in rock history, I'm one woman who's never found him to be attractive in the way Ty implied. So I guess there's one or two of us out there, lol.
