The track listing on some of these albums may vary as US an UK versions were different. wonderful Jagger thumbnail courtesy corner4art at corner4art.com/product/mick-j...
I'm gonna tell you Barry that this video was great I loved it now my favorite album is probably After Math now I just love how you talk about old music and how smart you are about it because you know this generation of music sucks and kids nowadays will never understand the meaning and love of how old music really is so I'm just glad there are people who still know and care about older music because I wish I lived back then so bad I'm the only one in my whole school that loves rock and older music so thank you Barry so much also another thing Mick Jagger will be 76 tomorrow that's crazy anyway just keep doing what your doing Barry I really appreciate it and again thank you for doing what you do
@@classicalbum Yes idk if done these's bands or not I would love to watch one about Nirvana, GNR and the red hot chili peppers and yea that's it thanks Barry
Beggars Banquet #1 for me. And you can't talk about Exile without mentioning Ventilator Blues. As usual, excellent to hear your viewpoint and use of language. Thanks.
Definitely agree with the top 4. Hard to separate them and they’ve taken turns being my fave at one time or another. Mick Taylor should get more credit for his contributions .
My number one Stones album is Sticky Fingers. All the planets aligned for them on this one. There isn't a duff track on it. It's pure Rolling Stones. Dripping with swagger and taunt, with a lascivious twinkle in the eye. Up to no good, top notch unfettered Rolling Stones. Cock rock at its finest. Brilliant.
Everyone makes fun of Satanic Majesties Request but I think because it is not just a Rolling Stones-style album, it actually shows how creative, fun and freaky the band could get. The songs are great in their own way, along with being a concept album to poke at the Beatles. Psychedelia is appreciated!
SMR was a great album. Loved all the early Stones. The Jimi Miller produced albums. Those where Mick Taylor played his astonishing virtuoso guitar. Some Girls was brilliant. They always write great songs, but for me a 1950’s child, later albums just don’t do it for me.
@@LeonTrotsky6782 Miller was great. After Exile I think they became more commercial, but I still like the later stuff, though not as much. Beggars Banquet was their highlight for me.
Interesting list, here's mine 1. Their Satanic Majestic Request 1967 2. Flowers (US) 1967 3. Sticky Fingers 1971 4. Exile on main Street 1972 5. Around and around (D) 1964 6. Get yer ya-yas out (live) 1970 7. Some Girls 1978 8. Beggar's Banquet 1968 9. Aftermath 1966 10. Totally Stripped (4 CD box) 2016 11. Black and Blue 1976 12. Tattoo you 1982 13. let it bleed 1969 14. Between the Buttons 1967 15. It's only Rock'n'Roll but I like it 1974 16. Goat's head Soup 1973 17. No 2 1965 18. Out of our Heads (UK) 1965 19. Steel wheels 1989 20. December's Children and everybody's (US) 1965
I’ve grown to really like Undercover lately. I put it on the other day while doing house work, and I couldn’t stop swinging to it. The stretch from “Too Much Blood” to “All the Way Down” is amazing. It reminded me a lot of the groove of “She’s So Cold”, which is just a lot of fun.
I agree completely about Exile on Main Street. It exists as a commentary on and deconstruction of the American musical idioms the Stones grew up on. It captures them throwing the histories of country, blues, gospel, and rockabilly into a mud pit and wrestling with them. Toss in an insane quantity of drugs and booze; the result is brilliant and heartbreaking in it's beauty,
Exactly! I knew I loved both albums when I bought them without knowing why. Would have been a hell of a double album. My first stones purchase as a kid was Beggars Banquet and that will always top my list. Just a great band!
i read that Ringo suggested “After-English” as the title for the album that became Revolver obviously as a play on After-Math…and I Am Waiting is in my Top 5 fave Stones tunes and i love that you referred to its inclusion in Rushmore.
An amazing review of the Rolling Stones top 10. Your insight is right on with each album. My tops in order: Let it Bleed / Aftermath / Exile / Beggars Banquet / Sticky Fingers / Some Girls / Buttons / December's Children / Black & Blue / YaYa's Thank you.
I have to agree with you Undercover, is their best album after 1970s and Tattoo You album. It's also the last album they made while they where still "young" early 40s to mid 40's for the band members.
I pretty much agree with your choices, certainly, the top 5 are just about cemented as their best recordings. Maybe an honourable mention for 1980's 'Tattoo You', but I've no idea which of those mentioned I'd leave out! Another classic 'Classic Rock' list, keep up the good work!
Excellent and insightful commentary and one of Rock music's most iconic bands. I've really enjoyed watching many of your fantastic reviews, excellent work!
Great stuff Barry. Great to see those 2 very underrated albums Black And Blue and Goat’s Head Soup on your list. Great to hear you mention great songs like Sway and the gorgeous Winter. Exile On Main St. has always been my favourite. Very entertaining and informative video.
One of my personal favorites , that NEVER gets mentioned much is "Metamorphosis". It's more of a collection of rarities and jams..but I really enjoy it. "Satanic Majesties" seems to take a lot of shit for some reason and gets knocked down - maybe I'm weird, it's one of my favs too. I always thought the Stones should do a tour called ANYTHING BUT THE HITS"...where they play EXACTLY that...ANYTHING but the hits..
To this day, I still am high on the fact that after one listen to Exile the week it came out in the US, I pronounced it the best Stones album, only to find out that on our side of the pond, critics and all my friends shat on it. And I just played it louder and more often. And decades later the place of Exile is not in question. But Beggars is a hard one. It could be number 2 for me. Or 3. or 4. It all depends on the day. Buttons never took for me, nor Undercover. Aftermath could be higher up. Too bad Brian couldn't roll with the punches. He had awesome range musically. I like Satanic Majesties for #10 on my list. The way I see it, the lads were stoned and having some goofy fun and I can easily align myself with that mood. I think people overthink it, taking themselves to seriously. I like artists that can say, "Yeah that's me. And that's me. And this wacky stuff, that's also me, too. All these moods exist in me in harmony. So, get comfortable and why don't we sing this song all together. . . "
Hello from the u.k. there was a flex disc sampler, given away free with our new musical express Magazine. When exile came out bought it, on release, I agree with all your comment!
Thank you... it's absolutely obvious that you have actually spun this entire catalog countless times in your life. Very refreshing perspective. My list of favorites changes monthly. I'm a deep diving lover of The Stones. My top 3 are Goats Head, Exile, and Emotional Rescue. Subscribing now!
Right on... Though like many I am partial to the Mick Taylor years ("Time Wait For No One"!), these are my favorite Stone's albums... Nice to see some love for "Goat's Head Soup", "Black and Blue", and "Undercover" (Spot on reasons!), the last two of which I find myself returning to more than any other Stone's albums for those sweet grooves, no doubt. Thank you, sir.
Very well done video. My opinion is 1 Let it Bleed 2 Sticky Fingers 3 Exile on Main St 4 Beggars Banquet 5 Tattoo You 6 It’s Only RnR 7 Some Girls 8 Goats Head Soup 9 Black & Blue 10 Aftermath
Excellent, thank you! Insightful and informative as always. Quirks of taste (as you say about choosing Undercover) highlight our, often intense, personal relationship with music, and that, for me, makes words like under/overrated redundant.
Hello. I just subscribed to your channel. I'll agree with you about Undercover and Black and Blue. Both these albums are overlooked, but like you said, there are all sorts of underrated gems on both these offerings. I'm looking ooking forward to more of your reviews.
Just discovered your channel last night through your Yes Albums Worst To Best video. Your channel is an instant classic! Love your detailed reviews and insights. I, too, LOVE Undercover and 90125. Based on you saying you were 13 when 90125 was new, I think I’m ten years your junior. Anyway, love that Undercover, Black And Blue and Goats Head Soup are in your Stones top ten! They’d be in mine as well.
Great list. For me the albums from 69 up to 72 are "the toppermost of the poppermost" (to quote another classic band). BEGGARS BANQUET, LET IT BLEED, STICKY FINGERS AND EXILE OM MAIN STREET dwarf the rest of their, however, brilliant catalogue.
For me? Yes on Undercover , Yes on Some Girls, Yes on Beggars Banquet, Yes on Exile on Main Street, Yes on Sticky Fingers, Take all the early records and take the best of the best in Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks, then add Voodoo Lounge, Bridges to Babylon ( I know it isn't a favorite by many but I loved it), and then take 1/2 of Steel Wheels and 1/2 of Dirty Work and put them together. Round out my list with Emotional Rescue.
Very impressive review/breakdown overall. I saw you kinda glossed over Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’ off sticky fingers though... Imo one of the greatest intro riffs ever created. And then didn’t even mention Monkey Man on Let it Bleed. I’ll have to check out the Let it Bleed review you did. Sticky fingers, beggars banquet, let it bleed, exile. All take turns being my favorite album. Just depends on the time of year and mood
Can't You Hear Me Knockin' and Monkey Man are two of their best. Stretched out jams with virtuoso killer jazz grooves; the hired guns sure earned their pay here. Wish they cut loose like this more often, cuz very few recordings reach this level of sonic bliss.
I've watched a few of your videos with interest and I found myself listening to Rolled Gold, which has led me to listen again to the Stones albums on my MP3 player. Sticky Fingers is a great album, but can I give an honourable mention to Blue and Lonesome which proves (as if anyone doubted it) that they are a damn good blues band.
Can't argue with your views but I had hoped that Voodoo Lounge would get a mention. Not by any means their best but one my personal favourites. Great video, thank you.
Tattoo You was the last great album /tour by the Rolling Stones with Waiting On A Friend, Worried About You, Neighbours, Hang Fire, Slave, Little T&A as well as No Use In Crying. ,
I love the fact that you included Undercover as a personal favorite of yours. That's why I include Sonic Boom and Fly on the Wall on my Kiss and AC/DC lists: personal favorites. Everyone having the same albums on their "best of" lists would be predictable and boring.
Exile's my favorite album ever by anybody. Absolute magic. But I feel the only thing missed here was Side 2 of Tattoo You, which stands with anything the great band ever did. It's special.
Great selection. The only one missing (but perhaps you excluded live albums from consideration) is Get Yer Yayas Out. Exiles is probably my favorite Stones album too. And I'm glad you included those two crucial early albums with Brian. As I grow old I find I almost prefer the Brian-era Stones to the later version.
I love Between the Buttons...it's their most English sounding, and top notch pop/rock on the cusp of psychedelia, also Amanda Jones reminds me of the Stones of "72/"73. They seemed to fit right in to the scene, while at the same time experimenting with studio and instrumentation. Jagger has complained about the production, but I think the stereo version is awesome, especially at full blast...
Great commentary & explanation for your personal choices. I loved Between the Buttons. Apparently Jagger hated it. Possibly due to Andrew Loog Oldham’s very strong influence on it.
For me, it's 1 Black & Blue, 2 Satanic Majesties 3 Let It Bleed 4 Beggars, 5 Steel Wheels 6 Sticky Fingers 7 Some Girls 8 Exile 9 It's Only Rock & Roll 10 Goats Head. Enjoyed your choices.
Just wanted to say that this is an excellent video and I'm looking forward to more content like this. I'm not too savvy on the post-'81 albums but I think I can manage my own top 10: 1 - Exile on Main Street (10/10) 2 - Sticky Fingers (10/10) 3 - Let it Bleed (10/10) 4 - Beggar's Banquet (9/10) 5 - Some Girls (9/10) 6 - Aftermath (9/10) 7 - Goats Head Soup (8/10) 8 - Tattoo You (8/10) 9 - Between the Buttons (7/10) 10 - Their Satanic Majesties Request (7/10)
I always enjoy your ranking videos, and this one is another of my favourites. I agree with you on many of the reasons, but I still think that the top two albums for me would be Let It Bleed at number one and Beggar's Banquet at number two. Those two albums were the peak of the Rolling Stones overall career, and after Brian Jones was gone his ingenuity was never replaced. I have loved this band throughout their entire career (even the lousy 1980's shite), but their pinnacle was that period in the late 1960's.
My top 10: 1. Exile On Main St. 2. Sticky Fingers 3. Tattoo You 4. Goats Head Soup 5. Let It Bleed 6. Beggars Banquet 7. Out Of Our Heads 8. Black and Blue 9. Emotional Rescue 10. Voodoo Lounge
interesting Top10. I would like to mention Bridges To Babylon and Steel Wheels as especially strong albums. Love the 'Just Might Get Juiced' from B.T.B. However the period from '68 to '72 was no doubt the peak of this band's powers.
Hi Barry, Always a pleasure and just incredibly spoken and described by you.I expect nothing less that is for sure. Your list is pretty much the same as mine. I would not include Between the Buttons... because I am not familiar with it... don't listen to it much. I can understand why you include Undercover of the Night. Love Too Much Blood and She was Hot. I think in Sticky Fingers the Stones have a perfect album... nothing is out of place. Our of the Blue has Memory Motel which strikes a particular chord with me. What to say about Let it Bleed and Exile. I cannot add any more to your video because your appraisal is just exquisite and all encompassing. You are definitely a man after mine own heart musically. If I can make a request for Classic Album Review.. if you can shine the spotlight on Procol Harum. For me an incredible Prog band... and have at least 5-6 masterpieces. Would be interesting which one you would choose to excavate and explore. God bless and keep on rocking, Tino
@@classicalbum Thank you. I most certainly will. Oh, I am sorry. You did do that video on Procol and I even watched and commented on it. I will re-explore it again. Thank you. I guess my memory plays tricks. Sorry.
Barry I am so happy to see that Black And Blue made the cut. I agree with your assessment of the tracks. Hand of Fate has sounded better as the years have passed. Let It Bleed comes very close to Exile for me. A truly great double in your list.
“post-prog apocalypse known as punk rock” i’m not sure if this was meant to be derogatory, or just general commentary, owing to the nature of punk rock. But this line made me laugh out loud. You’ve got a great way with words.
After doing a deep dive into the Stone's early years, I can say without any hesitation that Brian Jones might just be the most misunderstood and blatantly underrated musician in the history of rock and roll......tragic figure who simply dazzled fellow musicians with his rare talent and vision. 1. Exile On Main Street 2. Sticky Fingers 3. Let It Bleed 4. Beggars Banquet 5. Aftermath 6. Tattoo You 7. Some Girls 8. Emotional Rescue 9. It's Only Rock N Roll 10. Between The Buttons
Don't know why you didn't include some of the Stones' earlier, blues-influenced albums. The Rolling Stones Now is a classic, and one of my absolute favorites! Also love 12x5 and Out Of Our Heads. Hell, I still get down with December's Children and England's Newest Hitmakers. The Brian Jones years were magical for me! I was just entering adolescence, and music meant everything to me and my friends!
1.Sticky Fingers 2.Let It Bleed 3.Beggar's Banquet 4.Stripped 5.It's Only Rock'n'Roll 6.Exile On Main St. 7.Dirty Work 8.Goat's Head Soup 9.Some Girls 10.Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out
It's a good list, all the greatest albums are there. Stones are a difficult band to make a list for. I might have included Emotional Rescue because of the excellent Down In The Hole, featuring some of the best and most bluesy Mick Jagger vocals. And Where The Boys Go with the great Charlie Watts drum fills. Also a shout out for the first album. Friends of mine are always bitching about that basically being an album of covers, and that might be true, but the way they did them, raw and aggressive, must have been a big influence on the harder bands that came after. Funny how you mention all songs from Black and Blue, except Melody, an absolute masterpiece, although you could argue it is basically a Billy Preston song with the Stones in attendance ... You could also do a video of their greatest songs, I'd like to see you try ;) ... Or maybe you already have, I'll take a look ! All the best from Den Haag, Netherlands !
With Aftermath, I noticed Mothers Little Helper sound mix a lot more uneven and heavy with reverb effects compared to the same song on Through The Past Darkly (aka Big Hits 1969) with a much more even mix.
I bet you can guess what I'm going to say... 1) Thanks for the overview. You give me several albums to check out, when I come across them (your top 3 or 4, I'd say). 2) I wish there were MORE Rolling Stones in surround. And 3)... You will be greatly rewarded if you check out the multichannel (5.1 surround) SACD of Sympathy for the Devil. It's the only studio Rolling Stones in surround. It features the original recording mixed in to 5.1 from the multi-tracks, plus several interesting remixes from various artists, all in surround as well. Quite an interesting listen and one of a kind. I know of no other similar surround singles, per se. Thanks again.
For those who, like me, find their album output outside of the golden years + "their last great album" Some Girls somewhat spotty, can I recommend the Singles Collection: The London Years, a chronologically ordered compilation of all their early A and B sides, I can't remember if it has the odd album cut here and there. Wonderful compilation. I must delve one day into whether any of the latter day compilations are worth having. Even if you're a fan of some of the pre Beggars' Banquet albums, this compilation is an exhilarating listen hearing all those singles back to back. Tails of a bit by the third CD but worth it for the first two.
Back again, enjoying your videos immensely.. 10. Bigger Bang 9. Some Girls 8. Their Satanic Majesties Request 7. Goats Head Soup 6. It's Only Rock n Roll 5. Tattoo You 4.5 Aftermath And sorry to be boring 4. Beggars Banquet 3. Sticky Fingers 2. Let it Bleed 1. Exile on Main Street
Great list and analysis. I would personally bump Undercover (though I agree with you, it is underrated) and Black and Blue from the ranking in favor of Tattoo You, which I'd place at #10, and Satanic Majesty's, at #9.
At 10:58,between the buttons is in my opinion their most underrated albums ever I own both copies of it on cd and VINYL the cd is the u k version and the VINYL is the US version.
