I too am perplexed by the fact that so many critics hate this album. It remains my favorite by the Stones. Songs like Citadel, The Lantern, In Another Land, 2000 Light Years From Home, She's A Rainbow...magnificent! Sure there are a few misses in the proceedings but still it's so excellent. Thanks fer the heartfelt review!

Well, it's because so much of it is fake, laboured, plastic British psyche. Three brilliant tracks and so much garbage.

Hi Abigail! Thank you so much for bringing this brilliant, masterful work of art out into the light... back in the'60's, my friends and I in Iselin, NJ truly believed that we were the most devout Stone's fans on the planet 🤷🏻‍♂️? When the album came out and we first laid eyes on it, we were intensely blown away. When we gave it the first spin, we were totally confused and thought they had lost their minds. After dropping acid a few weeks later, we completely realized that this album is the epitome of psychedelic rock, far superior to anything else we've EVER heard. If I can figure out how to bring one album with me to the other side of deaths door as a conversation piece, it would be this album... God Bless you, Brian Jones & The Rolling Stones! ✌️💜🙋🏻‍♂️🎸

Wow. As a teen, in the late ‘80s, I frequented this vinyl shop called 2nd-Hand Tunes, a scant four blocks from my home, where I picked up _so many_ lightly-used first-press albums from their $0.99 bin … which, at the time would’ve just been some slightly old albums. So it blows my mind that my then 20-year-old near-perfect copy of _Their Satanic Majesties Request_ with the original lenticular cover purchased for 99¢ … is now a 55-year-old antique fetching over $50 on eBay. I wouldn’t part with it for anything, but it’s still crazy. Makes me rue the sh*tty roommates and friends I’ve had over the years who idly made off with many of my other albums, posters, amps, guitars, books, and oddities I’d picked up or inherited from the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. At least I still have my mom’s transistor radio she wore around Paris in 1962, and her many Beatles 45s in French! 🤗

Abigail, nice review. I like that you gave a little background on what the band was going through in 1967. I definitely think the sporadic recording sessions was in part due to all the upheavals the band was going through at the time. Looking back at the album so many years later, it is probably more popular, and more respected today then it was in 1967. There are some great tracks on this album. It’s an underrated gem to me. Keep up the good work.

Nice review! Thanks for choosing this album to discuss. It’s sadly an often overlooked and dismissed work in the Stones catalog. There are some really cool and creative arrangements on the record. “Citadel” has always been my favorite - featuring that great guitar riff. I really like the creepy spacey atmosphere of “2000 Light Years From Home” too. I remember saving allowance money to buy a copy (reprint from 80’s) and spending hours getting lost in that beautiful album cover and packaging while listening. I’ve also always dug KISS’ take on ‘2000 Man’ off of their Dynasty LP. Great review!

I absolutely adore this album. Yep. My favorite Stones record. But I can't help think if they would've gotten rid of "Gomper", shortened "Why Don't We" and added "Dandelion" and "We Love You". It would've made the album even better and probably better liked. But, of course they didn't issue singles on albums then so it was a missed opportunity. And dare I say it, but "Their Satanic Majesties " > "Pet Sounds" imo.

This is my favorite Stones album. I bought it at this department store, which seems weird, but they used to have record departments there. That was in 1970 or 71. At first I didn't get it but soon I was asking my guitar teacher to teach me how to play The Citadel. He was amazing and figured out the chords after listening to it a couple of times then taught me how to play it. It's one of the few Stones albums I still listen to.

If anyone reading this comment hasn't listened to the album yet, I urge you not to sleep on it. Some of the Rolling Stones' best songs are here - "Citadel" (amazing, echoey guitar riff), "She's a Rainbow" (one of the most beautiful songs of 1967, and there's some heavy competition), "The Lantern" (seems to me like a prototype for "Moonlight Mile" and "Shine a Light"), "2,000 Light Years From Home" (spooky space rock a la Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd). Rootsy, traditional rock 'n' roll wasn't the only thing the Stones could do. "Between the Buttons" is well worth checking out too - if "Satanic Majesties" is the Stones' Sgt. Pepper, "Buttons" is their Revolver. P.S. - the mellotron that opens "Sing This All Together (See What Happens)" sounds cheekily similar to the one that opens "Strawberry Fields Forever"

Hello again Abby, Brian Jones contributes mightily on Satanic Majesties! My favourite tracks are ~ Citadel ~ Brian plays some Psychedelic Tenor Saxophone! She's A Rainbow ~ Nicky Hopkins plays that nice Baroque Acoustic Piano. 2000 Light Years From Home ~ Brian plays some Eastern Psychedelic "Mellotron", àla The Pink Floyd's Rick Wright playing his Farfisa Organ, which is a highlight of the album. You know, I've always felt that The Rolling Stones "Child Of The Moon", on which Brian plays Soprano Saxophone, was their farewell to Psychedelia.

Damn girl...you look awesome. Wow. This album is good. My Mom had a copy she bought in 1968. When I was little she played her records all the time. I remember this album because it sounded different. When I got old enough I listened to this record and the CD I bought and it is something to lay back and put your headphones on. There is so much instrumentation to hear. "Sing this song all together see what happens" is interesting. Just a jam sounding like an acid trip. Cosmic Christmas is a bit spooky. But the album is a statement of the times. Psychedelia and swirling colors.

I just saw the Stones outside Boston. It was my 7th time. I'm going to see them again a week from tomorrow. I just got this album off my front step, on vinyl. I was thinking about giving it to a girl I like who likes the She's a 🌈, but I might keep it for myself. I already gave her Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Bob Marley's Kaya. I don't think she cares very much. It's still shrink wrapped, but it's tempting to open it cuz I know there's that funky maze inside. It's almost like a cereal box with games on the back. You didn't comment on the Beatles faces on the cover, and the lenticular cover changes the Beatles' faces into Stones' faces.

Hey Abby, You know they hid two Beatle pictures on the front cover: one of John, one of George. Can you spot them? It was a nod back to The Beatles who had put the "Welcome The Rolling Stones" on the cover of "Pepper". You can definitely see George below Charlie. I believe at least some of the band was on acid for the cover shoot, lol. I LOVE this album and so did my entire family; it has always had it's champions! I like it ten thousand times more than "Between The Buttons"! (but not "Aftermath"! That's a great one.) I LOVE the cover (which was relentlessly maligned!). So many great similar covers, where you open up and there's some psychedelic art. Moody Blues "In Search Of The Lost Chord" from '68, great album, great cover. "The James Gang Rides Again", do you have THAT album? Or "Yer Album", their first one? You will LOVE those albums, especially "Rides Again"! The James Gang (when Joe Walsh was in them: their first three albums), great frickin' band. / Major omission on guest players! Nicky Hopkins is the piano player, especially on "She's A Rainbow", which is virtually a Nicky Hopkins showcase. The guy does this, next thing you know he's playing the solo on Beatles "Revolution" (single version), he's all over Who and Kinks albums before and after, and all over The Stones albums.....unsung hero of British rock: Nicky Hopkins!

Brian plays mellotron, soprano sax, and flute. He plays organ on ‘The Lantern’ electric dulcimer and recorder on ‘Gomper’ and maybe some guitar somewhere. Keith probably plays almost all the guitars. Brian probably does not play the other brass instruments. Nicky Hopkins plays piano and harpsichord.

Funnily enough… I was introduced to this album as a boy via a cover of Citadel by the UK band The Damned. Released in 1981. Worth a listen. They did a few 60s covers including ‘I had too much to dream last night’ by the 13th floor elevators’….. wonderful how music takes us to different places. Gomper is awful, but she’s a rainbow is a joy. Sums you up 😂👍I don’t have instagram but love your full reviews - and the hair looks great. Image wise you dress perfect.

Their Satanic Magesties Request is my favorite Stones album, regardless of what anyone else thinks. She's A Rainbow & 2000 Light Years From Home are the highlights. I really liked this era, when the Stones ventured away from their bluesy roots towards other styles, from olde English to psychedelia.

If you look at it like "The Beach Boys Party" what's wrong with it? We never took a trip without it! "Citadel" is an AMAZING critique of modern society! I always add to the mix, "Dandelion", "We Love You" and "Child of the Moon". Imagine if you throw out the "duds" and add those songs! If it had come out like THAT, it would have been the greatest psych album of the sixties! Anyway, that's how I listen to it now. "Rainbow" still begins it of course!

Not my favorite Stones record, but when I want to hear the standout tracks from this I play side 3 of More Hot Rocks, which has Rainbow and 2000 light years, but then Child of the Moon (which apparently was a B side but could have fit on TSMR) No Expectations and Let it Bleed. That's a great side of music.

I never knew the snoring story! Ha! Like a lot of this album (and other albums of the period), i was haunted by that when I was a kid! I was also haunted by Brian on the front cover; he was the first rock star I knew who had died, might even have been how I learned about death! Ha! / I used to feel down on the long Sing This All Together but I love it now, you're right, great psychedelic track. It's a little like the fourth side of "Freak Out"! And we KNOW they loved Zappa! / The reason "Satanic" was so maligned was EVERYONE was doing "Sgt. Pepper" knock-offs by the end of '67, which is when this came out. Everyone suddenly had colorful, psychedelic covers (The White Album put the brakes on that!) and were doing long jams and using flange and all that. Plus you had all the NEW psychedelic bands: Hendrix, Airplane, Grateful Dead, The Pink Floyd, The Doors, Moby Grape, et al. So they were being accused of jumping on the bandwagon - not for the last time in their career! "Pet Sounds" by then had run it's course, that had been the year before......which in the 60s might as well have been five years! lol. The Beach Boys had some kind of small controversy regarding not playing Monterey Pop and were looked on as a bit unhip by December '67 (Hendrix saying "You'll never hear surf music again" in "Third Stone" didn't help!). Damn, I've written you TWO gigantic comments, so sorry!!! I'm recording actually, and I keep your blog and videos up.....they're fantastic for hitting when I start getting burnt out! You really are a muse! :D

thanks! i can't play that audio for more than 4 seconds or else the youtube copyright gods will smite me. most of the time the details i point out in songs would take more than that 4 seconds of audio to illustrate (plus i'm already flying pretty close to the sun with my other audio jokes,) so to avoid the mess i leave the music out

when it came out, the cover and psychedelic sound made me feel like they were trying a bit too hard to 'compete' with sgt pepper. but i was 17 and a bit too sure of myself. now, as an old fart, i love the album; they did a very credible job and several of the songs have come to haunt me a half century later. and, yes, you do in fact look like you stepped right out of my favorite time period.

The Gomper is one on highlights of this wonderful album. It is one of the most consistent because is not a song properly, but a jam, a fantastic jam though, that allowed the Stones to dig inside and out of their stone rock cannon. Jamming is an essential of psicodelic music of this time, so is a staple here, indispensable in this only psicodelic experience of this talented group.
