Yes, a true one of a kind that you couldn't copy if you wanted to. It's been my personal favorite since it first came out, which is kinda funny because at the time a lot of critics complained about the sound production, and that's one of the things i loved about it!

The best pop-rock-blues-country-everything album ever recorded. I bought this in 1972, in a record shop in Brasilia/Brazil, when I was eleven. Since then, songs from this album, like Torn & Frayed, have been constant companies to me.

Love the comment and replies but ya left off a few. Reggae, Punk, Ballads. That evil word disco but hey, it shot to #1 picked up more fans than they lost. In concert miss you Rocks as does emotional rescue. Finally played it live in 2013 ? Yep, never know what them boys will come up with. Keith could care less the genre of music it is. Well, he probably hated disco. So many other bands stuck in one genre. We've been blessed 56 years and counting.

Brian Jones (a.k.a. "Elmo Lewis") actually had very little influence in the recording sessions (March-June 1968) for what would become The Rolling Stones' seventh British and ninth American studio album, "Beggar's Banquet" (1968), a fact which may observed in scenes of Jean Luc Godard's film "One Plus One" (which incorporates the evolution of the recording for the track "Sympathy for the Devil"), which depict Jones dosing off while crouched on the floor playing acoustic guitar in a sound booth at Olympic Sound Studios in that turbulent summer of 1968. Perhaps The Rolling Stones' recording session in which Jones had the most influence was that for "Aftermath" (1966), the first of the band's LPs comprised entirely of tunes composed by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards that was also the fourth British and sixth American studio album released by the band and on which Jones played sitar, Appalachian dulcimer, marimba and Japanese koto, as well as guitar, harmonica and keyboards. Yet even despite these textures, the record's sound is still rooted in the Chicago electric blues sound that was the principal style of the early Stones, albeit perhaps with a "Paint It Black" hint of the psychedelia that would emerge more fully in the sessions of the band's next two studio albums, "Between the Buttons" and "Their Satanic Majesties Request" (both 1967). In the "Aftermath" sessions Jones showed precisely why he was, at the very least, the musical director of The Rolling Stones, clearly a musical wunderkind capable of playing just about any musical instrument he handled or touched. The term "musical genius" would not be much of stretch to describe Jones' playing abilities, even though he seemed perpetually frustrated by the prospect of actually composing a tune (in terms of the mechanics of that process, which include the writing of lyrics). A person may be well-spoken, very orally articulate, but still unable to transfer that verbal mastery to the creative level of writing poetry and prose. One may also clearly ascertain the instrumental contributions of Jones in several of the tracks" on "Aftermath," the sitar in the album's opener, "Paint It Black," the Dulcimer in "I Am Waiting" and "Lady Jane," locomotive-in-the-distance mouth harp-blowing in "Goin' Home' (one of the earliest rock & roll tracks to exceed the 10 minutes' mark), marimba in "Out of Time" and "Under My Thumb," among others. In "Ruby Tuesday" (from the sessions for the "Between the Buttons" LP which followed "Aftermath") Jones performs a tour de force in his multi-instrumentation of flute, piano and recorder. But by the time of "Beggar's Banquet" Jones was all but finished in his musical journey with the band he co-founded and gave its name, already contemplating new musical horizons along the lines of a Delta Blues and swamp rock-influenced ( a la Creedence Clearwater Revival) sound until the fate of July 3, 1969 intervened.
@thomasjensen3214
@thomasjensen3214 6 лет назад
I am sorry man, but Brian Jones is overrated as a musician. He was a great harp player. But otherwise he could only play bits of music on different instruments. It is not like he MASTERED all these instruments. I play guitar and bass, but I can also play Oh Susannah on harmonica or I can play simple one note tunes on piano, or I can keep a simple beat on a drumkit. But it does not make me a musical wunderkind.
@flyingburritobro68

Jones barely contributed to Banquet. He played a nice bottleneck acoustic part on No Expectations but that was it. He was done. Look at the film of him in the movie One Plus One. Sad

Favorite song on an amazing album! Mick Taylor rose the tide around the Stone's boat and took the band from black & white to color. Put aside the myths and know that Mick T gave the band the fluid lead guitarist they never quite had prior to mid-1969. Keith owned the riffs but Mick T was the virtuoso. Gone after 1974.

This song is definitely Mick singing about Keith. He aint tied down, to no hometown, and everybody was reckless. YOu think he's bad, he thinks your mad, and the guitar player gets restless. His coat is torn and frayed. Keith was notorious for wearing cloths till the literally fell off him. This is my favorite Stones song ever, and this video makes me want to back up for the Cote de Azure right now and see Nellcote.

Awesome video. I think the 'Stones would be pleased. One of the greatest albums the 'Stones ever created. I love the Mick Taylor years with the group. They had a great run of albums. They took everything from the Brian Jones years, and coupled it too another great talent. Taylor does not receive enough credit for being in the band. Hope they kept a pot seed from the plant they were smoking when they made this album. So many people do not realize the greatness of the 'Stones outside the norm.

My God, don't we all miss the chemistry and musical integrity from that period. I caught them live on the '73 European tour and they were great. I have probably seen them a further 10 times since then and every time they got worse, culminating in 2003 when I nearly walked out in sheer sadness at what they had turned into.

hat was so nicely said. Delta blues, gospel, and country licks. All held together by rock and roll. People just get don't get it. The Stones have always been heavily influenced by all of this, as was Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. The blues, gospel, and country backbone are what gives their music soul and keeps it playing in your mind.
