The Roman Legion's focus on the Hastati, Principes, and Triarii often obscures the vital role of the Accensi, a class of troops specializing in skirmish warfare. While the heavy infantry units claim historical attention, the Accensi, primarily armed with slings, were essential disruptors on the battlefield.
Roman citizens, obliged to serve 16 years and provide their equipment, resulted in two infantry groups. The lower property class formed light infantry, including the Accensi, often underestimated but crucial in Roman warfare. Contrary to misconceptions, their skilled use of slings played a significant role in disrupting enemy formations.
Despite economic constraints and limited defensive tools like small shields, the Accensi's mass volley fire harassed foes, creating opportunities for heavy infantry advancement. This strategy, initially seen as marginal, contributed substantially to Roman military success.
Economically disadvantaged within the Legion, the Accensi faced unique challenges. While their heavy infantry counterparts boasted martial prowess and elaborate armor, the Accensi, often older and less experienced, relied on slings due to financial constraints. Their role as skirmishers, however, proved vital in creating chaos and opportunities on the battlefield.
Positioned strategically behind heavily armed units, the Accensi used slings to engage enemies from a safe distance. This disrupted formations and created openings for fellow infantry, showcasing their unique skills and tactics. While not frontline fighters, their role in shaping Roman military engagements was invaluable.
In conclusion, the Accensi's position as the least affluent and least equipped members of the Roman Legion made them a unique and often overlooked component of Roman military forces. Their reliance on slings, along with the challenges posed by their age and inexperience, set them apart from the heavy infantry. Nevertheless, their contributions to Roman military success, particularly in disrupting enemy formations and creating opportunities for their heavier infantry counterparts, should not be underestimated. The Accensi's resourcefulness in making the most of their limited equipment exemplifies the adaptability and effectiveness of the Roman military machine.

I'm dumb, are slings not line of sight weapons? Were they able to arc their shots?
@54032Zepol
@54032Zepol 10 месяцев назад
Yeah you sling the rock upwards not down or straight ahead otherwise the shot would be far short of target
@RushlockMedia

@@54032Zepol ah ok, I'd assumed it would lose too much velocity, but I guess the trade off of coming in from above would have greater value

@@RushlockMediaYoure right Slings are much more dangerous as line of site but would you like being pelted with rocks from above? Still has value.

Similar thing with archery, Aim upwards and then on its way back down the arrow speeds up. :)

@@AncientHistoryGuy yeah for some reason it makes sense to me for arrows but not slings. Probably my lack of awareness of size of shot for slings

Skirmishers in this period are often underestimated. Even if they never killed anyone, forcing the enemy line to stay in formation and with shields up while your own line could take a knee to rest and get water brought up to them would have a big effect when the lines finally clashed.

Heard about these guys from a game "Total War: Rome 2" DLC Rise of the Republic. So now when can you talk about the Rhodian Slingers or the Hellenisation of the Egyptian Army after Alexander's death?

Never got round to playing Rise of the Republic! And im around halfway through ancient Italy at the moment, i think the next series of vids after i finish Rome (one more) will be the Etruscans, and then the Greeks of Italy. And then probably some more Greek units!

What's the different between them and velites, other than their weapons?
@vondantalingting
@vondantalingting 3 месяца назад
Velites came from the Polybian reforms where Manipular system was applied (Velites,Hastati, Principes, Triarii.). What History guy forgot to mention is that they existed in different eras. Rorarii, Accensi, and Leves were classifications of light infantry troops that accompanied the armies before Rome adopted manipular organization. They trace their origin from way back to the Kingdom era where a Roman army was followed by a number of Lightly armed troops who acted as Skirmishers but after the Polybian reforms was done with and grouped only as Velite. Btw. The leves, Rorarii, and Leves operated differently. Leves were at the front and were frontline skirmishers, rorarii were the reserves before the triarii who filled the gaps within the lines of need be, and the accensi, its explained in the video.

To make it more convoluted: Velites came as a result of an effort to simplify and increase the flexibility of the Roman army. The Previous Camillan System might've been useful against the Celts but they were rendered useless against the Southern Hillbillies known as the Samnites. In the Camillan System there were four classifications of troops. The poor (Leves, Rorarii, and Accensi), the less poor hoplites (Hastati), well off hoplites(Principles), and the rich old bastards (triarii). See those three kinds in the poor section? They were useful against the Celts when they invaded Italy and fought the Etrurians. Furus Cammilus who didn't have good political record but was the man Rome needed thought that to beat the Celts is to be a celt, he assigned more skirmishers in the army resulting in three distinct kinds of light infantry with different roles all because he saw returning soldiers with shields turned into porcupines. Leves at the front, Rorarii who acts as in-between a skirmisher and a hoplite despite wearing almost no armor save for a shield and helmet, and the Accensi. In this case the Rorarii and Accensi were reserves while the Leves screened against cav and other light infantry in the flanks or wherever they were assigned. That's pretty much all you need to know other than the Velites performed all three roles.
