Emperor Nicholas I Pavlovich started his 30-year rule with suppressing the Decembrist Revolt. On 14 December, 1825, the day of taking oaths by the new tsar, over a thousand people, including women and children, died. The revolt’s ringleaders were executed, the participants were sent to exile. Later, when Nicholas asked his son what he would have done if he had been the tsar, the young Alexander answered: “I would forgive”. Alexander II Nikolayevich went down in history as liberator. He succeeded in doing the thing that none of his predecessor was able to: he abolished serfdom. However, together with the emancipation of peasants, a new power, unknown before, but unstoppable, unleashed…
The most vivid pages of Russian history and the establishment and consolidation of Russian state power are associated with the eighteen Russian Tsars of the House of Romanov which include such historic names as Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Nicholas I and Alexanders I, II and III. The dynasty ended with the brutal assassination of the last Tsar, Nicholas II and his family by the Bolsheviks in Ekaterinburg in 1917.
The Romanov dynasty played a hugely important role in world history, and the series highlights the life stories and characters of the tsars, recounting their rise to power and their contribution to the dynasty, their merits and their faults, their achievements and mistakes, their victories and defeats in war.
The series also examines the Russian form of 'Caesarism' as a system of state administration - its advantages and drawbacks and how the Russian state changed under the Romanov's rule.
THE ROMANOVS is told in eight epic one-hour episodes using a unique combination of magnificent CGI animation and dramatic reconstruction with careful and accurate attention paid to each period.

Same. IAnd I personally appreciate the fact that unlike other documentaries that feature "cut-aways" to historians, biographers, etc, talking to the camera about the subject matter, this one solely has the faceless narrator doing all the of talking. It gives everything a better flow in my opinion.

No, it was built that way because of steeper hills and rough terrain of russia. And either way there wasn't really a standard accepted gauge when Russia's first rail was built.

I started watching episode 1 for only a few minutes with the intention of watching something else. Well, that didn’t happen. I got mesmerized and watched all episodes straight through for 8 hours. I wondered how Nicholas II came to power and his lineage. Now I know his history and that he is the great-great grandson of Catherine the Great. I learned a lot watching this. Thank you very much. You did a great job putting this video together.

Clearly,suicide bombers are not a recent occurrence but Alexander was an enlightened and just ruler and deserved to live a full and happy life, not to be murdered at the hands of a suicide bomber.

I find it very ironic that Tsar Alexander II, a liberal, reformist and progressive, was assassinated not by some reactionary conservative, but by radical revolutionaries, who like the Tsar, wanted to change the Old Order.

+George Severn Seems like they always manage to assassinate the wrong person. Then again, in Alexander's case, they knew that his murder would cause his successor to be much more repressive thereby sowing the seeds for the revolution they hoped would help them seize power . Not all revolutionaries are dedicated to the greater good, some are quite ruthless, self-serving, and opportunistic. Not much better than the people they seek to overthrow.

I am now intensely interested in Russian history! We studied it at school in 1982 but it was not very deep, as it revolved more around the time of WWI, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand etc. Great series!

Woah Alexander II evaded death life almost as much as a cat’s 9 lives 😅 Also, I hated how they found hard to forgive the imperial court’s sins instead looking at the reforms and his strive for modernisation. He did his best and in his conscience he knew he was doing his best to be a good leader. It’s just sad

Nicholas figures in an urban legend about the railroad from Moscow to Saint Petersburg. When it was planned in 1842, he supposedly demanded the shortest path be used despite major obstacles in the way. The story says he used a ruler to draw the straight line itself. However the false story became popular in Russia and Britain as an explanation of how badly the country was governed. By the 1870s, however, Russians were telling a different version, claiming the tsar was wise to overcome local interests that wanted the railway diverted this way and that. Actually what happened was that the road was laid out by engineers and he endorsed their advice to build in a straight line.

Pushkin's tales for children are read to children before bedtime. In order to write a fairy tale in poetry, great talent is needed. But Pushkin also wrote serious works - simply magnificent. He was read during his lifetime, and is read today.

This is one the best docu-series I've ever watched on You Tube. Very very informative, very well narrated, great editing and awesome art work, great all around. I think the only docu-series or documentaries I've watched that are better are the Ken Burns docu-series on PBS all of them are great. The Civil War, Prohibition, Baseball, World War 2 all of those are top notch and done right, just like this but the Ken Burns ones are just a little bit better. Great job to whoever worked on this series.

On 13 July 1817, Nicholas married Charlotte of Prussia (1798-1860), who thereafter went by the name Alexandra Feodorovna. Charlotte's parents were Frederick William III of Prussia and Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Nicholas and Charlotte were third cousins, as they were both great-great-grandchildren of Frederick William I of Prussia.

Nicholas was portrayed by Emil Jannings in the 1928 American silent film The Patriot. In 1938 he was played by Harry Baur in the French film The Patriot.

Kiev University was founded in 1834 by Nicholas. In 1854, there were 3600 university students in Russia, 1000 fewer than in 1848. Censorship was omnipresent; Historian Hugh Seton-Watson says, "The intellectual atmosphere remained oppressive until the end of the reign.

The ultimate irony is that the People's Will expected things to be better for the Russian people after Alexander II died, more rights and freedoms for the people, Russian autocracy either softened, reformed or abolished. But the complete opposite happened Alexander III strengthened the autocracy even more He threw liberal reforms and the possible constitutional monarchy idea in the oven Censorship and repression became stronger And with all that grew the ideas and desire for revolution even more So in the end the People's Will succeeded. The results just came decades later and some of them didn't live to see it. And if they were alive during the Revolution, they would have died after Stalin took over everything

I love Russian history! It's so colorful and fascinating. I have to say, though, that it's gross hearing the narrarator offhandedly talking about royals "falling in love" with 14 year old girls. 😳

Just my humble opinion, the actor portraying Tsar Nicholas 1 is better looking than the actual Tsar...even though it is stated that women fainted in his presence because he, the Tsar, was so handsome.

@@jaddiemannie7418 Morning "J", I looked at paintings of the actual Tsar Nicholas as a young and older man prior to my post. The real Tsar, in my opinion, was attractive, especially his eyes, BUT the actor's eyes and face are more powerful and more beautiful to me. His big blue eyes are piercing and deep set which I've always thought attractive. His nose, hands and lips are beautiful , as well. Question, what do you think of the series as a whole?? I absolutely enjoyed it and have watched it several times. Very informative. Wish I had this when I was in school. History classes were NEVER this entertaining. Again, give me your opinion. I watch this way too much and my friends think I’m weird and I’m a black American so I have no ties whatsoever but I do want to visit St. Petersburg but I’m feared ppl will shun me out

Hi! Skin colour is not a problem at all. There's never been racism in our multinational country. I've seen a lot of black American tourists in Moscow and St. Petersburg, so don't worry! Just contact the travel agency :) People may glance at you with curiosity, because there are not many African Americans in Russia (less than 0.5%), but it would be more like: “Oh, you're black, that's cool! May I take photo with you?” - without any intention to offend. Most of Russians think black people are cool and easy-going, so you have all chances to become popular, especially among our girls. We're also used to think that no one in the world cares about our history and culture nowadays, or people in the West don't like us, to put it mildly, because of anti-russian propaganda. That's why we're always glad to welcome foreigners who are interested in our country and who not consider us as a bunch of ignorant vandals :D (sorry for my English if it's terrible)

😂😂😂 hey, I am Russian, living in Moscow. This summer me and my husband went to st.Petersburg as tourists. After the airport we took a bus to the city. Then we took a taxi to get to our hotel, and guess what? The taxi driver was black! Well that was surprising, in a good way :) Noone would even think of harming a tourist. And our police treats the tourists better than russians. So don’t be fooled by stereotypes come to Russia! :)

The romanov government's under the Tsar's weren't gathering grounds of enlightenment and inclusion. I'm sadly not surprised the Russian state inched its way towards Revolution! If I were a decent, hardworking good person living under the relentless brutality of the Tsars I suppose I'd find the revolutionary appeal very surductive.
