I remember that while attending the University of Alaska, Fairbanks from 1965 to 1967,they gave us a concert. They received a standing ovation. That was the last time that I heard them. This concert brings back memories of the extreme cold encountered as we left the gym where the concert was held. But looking up suddenly we saw the northern lights sweeping across the sky. Their music was sweeping like the sky reaching down to us as the snow squeaked under our feet.
When I played in the Boulder (CO, USA) Philharmonic Orchestra, we played this concerto with los Romero. Such a fine fun piece! And these world class musicians are just as fun off the stage as in concert. They played 2 or 3 encores; I only remember their last one, Flamenco Conversation, that started fast and only got faster as it went on. The Colorado audience all stood and cheered at the end. What a great family!
Thanks for sharing this wonderful performance. Rodrigo's works are some of my favorite music. Miles Davis's Sketches of Spain, Chick Coreas Spain all pay homage to his work. The Romero's are unparalleled and this is testimony to that fact.
For what it is worth, this recording sounds a lot like the Mercury Living Presence CD that was issued in 1996, # 434 369-2 that was made during the first presentation of Concerto De Arunjuez commissioned by Celedonia Romero for Rodrigo to play with his three sons, Celin, Pepe and Angel. The piece sounds like the one played on the CD recorded in in San Antonio, Texas. With Vivaldi Guitar Concertos. The Rodrigo pieces are almost note for note. Undistinguishable from the CD and Video. FWIW, Rodrigo was blind by the age of three.
