Mr. Rosenwald is related to my stepmother. He sponsored her family so they could come from Germany to America and be safe from the Nazis. What an incredible human!!!

Four Rosenwald Schools were built in Pamlico County, NC and one is still standing, Holt's Chapel. It was important 3 room school until 1963, then became Holt's Chapel Community Center. It is a 501 (c) (3) and in need of a new roof and other renovation.

I attended Roland W. Hayes Elementary School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, 1958-1964, a Julius Rosenwald / Booker T. Washington School. Today 2024 our Neighborhood has formed a Core Committee and was donated a plaque, which has been ordered. A Memorials plaque that will be placed on the Home of The Bessie Smith Cultural Center's property located on Martin Luther King Blvd. in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This plaque will represent our school Roland W. Hayes Elementary, and to thank Julius Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington for their dedication and gift to Black Education. Plans for this plaque and placement should be finalized by the end of 2024. 🙏 Miz Rose Core Committee Member

Hi, Do you remember much about your day to day curriculum? 1) Did you focus primarily on core subjects? 2) Did you have any arts available I.e. 3) Did you have homework? 4) Did you have books to take home and read? 5) Were your parents expected to help you do reading/ homework?

My mom and other family members attended the Julius Rosenwald School. The structure is restored and is located on the Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. I have her class picture and sent a copy to the curator to include in the historical information on the school.

I am from Eastern NC and we have quite a few Rosenwald Schools in my home county. I want to say NC had the most Rosenwald Schools. I had quite a few family members as well that attended these schools. It is a wonderful & relevant piece of our history.

This morning I attended a historical marker ceremony for a Rosenwald school in Kershaw Country, South Carolina. This was special for me because this is the school that my uncle bought and converted to his home. After my uncle passed away, one of his sons owns this home now and has fully restored it to beautiful condition. I'd always know that it was a school, but today I learned the true significance of it. There's so much history there. I was so proud to be there and to understand what it was all about.

How can we keep these schools open in our communities?

I don't think many of us knew much about it. I came to this video today because my uncle's house is formerly one of these school. This morning we had a historical marker ceremony to commemorate this school. When I was a kid in the 70s, I'd been told that the house used to be a school but I had no idea about the true significance of it. My cousin has completely restored it now, not as a school but as a livable home. My father attended this school but I only learned that yesterday. I lived in the community, my family lived in the former school, but I still didn't know about it's true history until now, almost 50 years later.

I attended a 3 room Rosenwald school called Rockwell in Derita, NC outside of Charlotte in the first grade. The school closed late 50s and we were bussed to Torrence Lytle in Huntersville...all segregated. Segregation definitely had it's positives.

They should have allowed these schools to stay open after desegregation and receive tax money to sustain the schools just as the white schools did. Now we have schools in Texas named after confederate generals and their white founders. These schools could have still existed today desegregated but while preserving the school and the history. I live in a freedmen town that my family settled in after slavery and now the school is crumbling. If it was allowed to stay open then the whole town would have advanced around it because of the influx of students. What they did was deliberate and an attempt to wipe us away from history.

This morning, we had a marker ceremony for one. This one was purchased more than 50 years ago and converted into a home by my uncle. I'd always known that the home was once a school, but I never knew any of this history until now. There's a tremendous amount of history there both as the school, and as a home for my uncle, his children, and grandchildren.
