This was great, thank you for introducing me to this prize, and to some great books.

Oh wow, I read 3 of them: taking flight, jellyfish, and the exceptions. Nancy Hopkins' story is by far my favorite and I hope it wins. Just excellent book, capturing the exhilaration of doing science and the obstacles and hard choices women (but not men) must do in this field. As a woman in science with a mother who made it all the way to faculty chair status, I connected with the book 100%. Sadly very accurate representation of our current science environment too

I would be interested in reading The Exceptions, I work in science and I think this topic is so relevant today. On that line, I really enjoyed Bitch by Lucy Cooke. A very informative and fascinating book on the female animal, evolution, and the sexist paradigms that have interfere on how we interpret the data we get from science. The way she narrates serious topics while also being funny its just great :)

I read An Immense World and it's as close to a page-turner as scientific non-fiction gets! Super interesting & I blasted through it in about a week.

I highly enjoyed your reviews. I will put An Immense World and Jellyfish Age Backwards on my list….. and probably the rest as well. Thank you for reminding me of this award list. The first I heard of it was last year when you review that year’s entries and I read a few of them since.

Merci beaucoup, Eric. I try to integrate some non-fiction into my reading too (when I can), though typically it's Hstory or social science, like Philosophy. I guess you could say I am overdue for some pure science.

If you can find a way to watch it, PBS did a Nova episode including Nancy Hopkins and her story in 2021. It is called "Picture a Scientist." It's very well done. Thanks also for covering this prize. I'm very happy that these books were brought to my attention. A science book I read recently which I would recommend is Pandemic by Sonia Shah. This book predates Covid by a few years. It is a fascinating look at how pandemics work, primarily through the lens of cholera.

Thanks. I should read some science. Three books in that list are interesting to me. Do you ever feel the pressure to be your own elder, to be wise beyond your years because you have no one in your life to be wise for you? Does that affect your reading?

@@EricKarlAnderson OMG thank you for displaying such a classic actor, I have friends in their 20s who do NOT have the same film references I do. I recently heard of Paul Newman referred to as the "salad dressing guy" and died a little 😱

@@ginsoakedgirl4 I would have died a little as well. Refer them to Cool Hand Luke and The Towering Inferno.
