Here is the machine section I built for Domino World 2020! Due to the pandemic, we couldn't have the event hosted in the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum as we normally would. To make up for this, the team decided to host an online event, in which each of our individual projects built throughout the week would be screen-linked together in the final product. Half of the tricks in this machine were completely improvised, but everything ended up blending together nicely and I'm happy with how my final machine turned out!
Domino World is an event hosted by bpdoles:

The honest truth is that I love basically every trick in this. So novel, so aesthetically pleasing, and in particular, so well-designed with some super fleshed out connections and mechanisms operating behind the scenes to make complex execution look easy. Balls aren't just gonna launch themselves three times, after all.

Just another outstanding effort from you once again! One of the biggest challenges for me (as usual for live events we're both at) was keeping my own morale up while you were showing off what you had built during the day. And that's a huge compliment. There are lots of builders who I admire, who are capable of stunning me with what they've made. But you're the only one whom I'm actively jealous of. I find myself thinking "I wish my machine was more like Joel's" pretty regularly during event weeks, and DW20 was no exception. It goes without saying that the tricks you built here are god-tier. The crane? Genius. The circular track creation? Brilliant. The launcher reloaders? Outstanding. And although this machine (like most of your machines) has minimal overlap, or interwoven connections, or intricate pathing between tricks, it still avoids the pitfall that many machines like that can fall victim to: feeling more like "a bunch of tricks" than "a machine." This is achieved by making sure that all the elements fit together snugly on the table like puzzle pieces (Tetris blocks?) and making sure that the end of one trick leads seamlessly into the beginning of the next. It really is masterful chain reaction art, and I'll forever be envious of your work.

Your determination to still make these machines/video's after 8,5 years is amazing! Thanks!

My favourite thing about this machine is probably its attention to detail for only using a single ball in each sequence - namely the unfolding track with the cup attached to the lever, the crane, and the triple launch. It’s very easy when making machines to have a ball roll down a track and then once the track has moved, have a different ball roll down it. It’s really cool to see that the same ball that causes the crane to move into position is the same ball that rolls down it, and same with the lil leap day lever that causes the launchers to move. It’s not even completely necessary, but it’s so interesting to see how a single ball can go through so many little motions to get from one part of the machine to another, like a little journey for the little guy Also Mukmuk is tony hawk skater pro!!! 🛹🐬🛹

Idk how on earth you make your machines so compact and intricate. I love how the arm unfolded and doubled as a ramp later on.

Do you and Lyle both just happen to own mini globes? Or did you use the same one? Amazing machine, as always :)

The trick of ball which got launched 3 times was amazing. How did the launchers move there places ❔

There’s a system of levers that the billiard ball switches every time it passes the top part of the track. The launchers are glued to a sliding system and there are 3 latches on the side that the lever system attaches to. Each time the lever at the top flicks, the bottom lever unlatches from the slider, causing it to go one increment forward. Thanks!

o k a y c o m m e n t t i m e As always, you take the cake in terms of style points. Everything you do is super elegant, simple, and clean, and this machine is no exception. 0:24 - obviously i love this one. I think it's a nice play on the rolling gear trick. I also just realized as I'm typing this how you prevent slipping then it "rolls". The use of those little circular things in combination with the grey pieces in the corners of the holding cell is brilliant! I know you've done this before and I'm not sure why I'm just now noticing this haha 0:29 - oooh this one is very clever too. The way you incorporated this with the very next trick (the one with the red cup) is seamless as each trick relies on each other. Gotta love s y m b i o s i s. 0:36 - ugh how do you get the perfect weights for everything haha. That's something I struggle with so much for some reason... This trick is very aesthetically pleasing as well! 0:48 - this whole sequence with the launchers is so amazing, from the way the launchers shift due to the tiny lever on the track to how precise every single motion is. In my mind this is the perfect trick for someone who writes code because it is literally just a for loop 😂. That might be why I like it so much... Anyways, well done! You never fail to impress with event machines!

Wow! My favorite trick has to be the one with the launchers. The way everything is powered/triggered by the cue ball is really satisfying, as extra connections would take away from the trick. I also really like the trick at 0:36 because of how you included an elevator for the red ball to travel up instead of a string pull that released a different ball to go down the track. Once again an amazing machine from you with tons of other innovative tricks!

Your machine has so much consistency among its ideas, now I love the concept of unrolling or even just "unstacking" of objects! I guess I've seen it in your work before but now it has that extra appeal. It feels like those machine ideas could almost be easter eggs for Domino World 2018 and 2019, because of the unstacking tracks being an innovation from 2018, and the dipping track arm kind of being like a reverse snake tail trick from 2019. But the final launching trick is completely new and creative, and... H O W. I can't even begin to explain anything about it but that's my favorite trick from your section. Awesome job!!

Thank :) That launching trick was initially planned for 11 Inventions so maybe that’s why it was so d e n s e with action and s u s p e n s e when I built it

I absolutely love everything about this machine, primarily how I feel like this machine best captured the “live-event” feel of a chain reaction. All the tricks were remarkable, presented well, and stand out on their own while also blending well with all the other tricks. My personal favorite would have to be the black track bridge, but I also really liked the unfurling black track, the blue round track sequence, and the triple launcher. It’s a shame that you weren’t able to bring these amazing ideas to Ann Arbor this year, but I’m really happy that you were able to bring this beauty of a machine to life :)

This is literally the perfect eye-opener to the event, although I guess I expect nothing less from your style nowadays. You are continuously able to take straightforward yet incredibly clever concepts and incorporate them in your machine flawlessly. It was very fun to hear your whole thought process through video calls, you have so much insight on your machines! Thanks for epic machine joel yantha

I've been watching and admiring your machines for years, and I feel like this was in some ways a perfect machine. Technically impressive as always, but more importantly, it aesthetically feels to me like your most balanced composition yet. Nothing is excessive, there is a very pleasant amount of variety, and the pace and duration feels just right. The space between lines, curves, and areas feels almost like it's to scale of a real life place - there is no overcrowding, and no wasted space. It feels almost like a city planner's diorama - the space accommodates the ball as a city block should accommodate a pedestrian. Sometimes I feel like mastering a craft isn't about the most impressive feats one can perform - it's about knowing how much or little to utilize to create an intelligent piece of art. Beautiful work! Thank you so much for continuing to make these!
