He's been getting away with these types of tackles for years. Then after the tackle plays injured. I blame the refs for not clamping down earlier

He had all the time in the world to drop the tackle around his waist or legs and he didn't. It wasn't mistimed.

Courtney Laws is 6 feet 13 and can still make shuddering LEGAL tackles folding people up like deck chairs. No excuses - this was reckless and deserves the maximum ban.

The ban reduction of 50% was the most ridiculous decision for a serial offender. Anyone who thinks he’s not a serial offender is disingenuous.

Farrell went out to royally smash that kid into next week. Make a big statement tackle but got it very wrong. Looked like some of the tasty tackles from 1970s French players! 10 week ban surely. Doubt it though as it's Farrell aka England captain so more like 4 - 6 week ban I reckon.

Why the protracted debate? He's a disgrace. If it walks like a duck... Ban him. His "loss" to rugby will be no loss at all.

If OF doean't get a lengthy ban it will certainly show Englush Rugby in bad light, bot just to the youngsters comming through the game, but to the rest of the the rugby world. This tackle has rightfully gone viral, and people all over the world have an opinion. Owen has a global reputation for having poor technique and hitting hard, sadly for him there is no excuses at his level of proffessionalism, that has to be a lengthy ban, and any mitigation needs to be put aside on the grounds he's escaped punishment to date while anyone with the slightest interest in rugby has seen this comming for years. Sorry Owen, I think you know it but have been too sheltered by the Saracens arrogance to be put in a losition to have to do something about it in the Premiership......we didn't see it so much during rhe world cup, so clearly an issue addressed by the England coaching staff.

There was malice and ill-intent in the tackle. No question. If he hits him low, it is a good highlight and counts as a dominant tackle. Hit him as he did and it is red card and at the high end of the discipline range.

Ban him for a year. He’s done it so many times. Players should start coming at him with their shoulders if he’s not gone. Put him out.

Farrell has been getting away with this sort of thing for years, (being England's golden boy) where no other player would. This is the logical consequence. The brat naturally thinks the laws don't apply to him. In the 2018 Springbok series, he dished out a no-arms high tackle in two consecutive matches, and got away with it. Luckily for Andre Esterhuizen, he's a much larger man, than Farrell. World Rugby is all talk about player safety, but reality is a bit different.

About time that the guy has been sent off. he has been getting away with this type of tackle for far too long.

I suggest that the referees who have bottled out in the past and not red-carded Owen Farrell for terrible tackles can take a share of the blame for this. A couple of previous bans already served would have most likely done the job.

What's so bad about it, besides the swinging arm and the height, is the fact that Farrell had SO MUCH TIME to prepare for that hit. And still hit his opponent too high. It makes it look like he actually wanted to hit him high. Which he might actually have. That really was a despicable shot.

If the tackle was made by a Polynesian covered in tattoos... would people be calling for a lengthy 6month plus ban?

If Farrel had dropped his height by even 10 - 12 inches, that tackle would be on a highlight reel. Sadly he didn't and almost took a chaps head off. Yours, a Sarries fan.

All we can go on at this stage is the TV replay. It was a very bad tackle, it was with force and it was at neck height. As such the starting point for any punishment (and there will be) is what is the normal punishment for that type of tackle (10 weeks). From that starting point there will deductions from the starting punishment for OF's immediate contrition and that he is not a regular visitor to the disciplinary committee. My guess is that he will end up with a 6 week ban

It wasn't a tackle it was an assault with intent. If he doesn't get the maximum penalty then there's something very wrong with the system.

10 games isn’t sufficient, 5 games is insulting. He’s the Joey Barton of the rugby world...this isn’t a one off, he’s at it week in/week out!

Saw him play in epic England Scotland draw at Twickenham. He got frustrated when Scotland came back and lined up Darcy Graham, smallest player on the pitch with a spiteful and nasty hit that could have injured him. I lost respect for him then. This latest one looks very bad - not on at all. Ps I’m English

His been doing it for years. Similar to Butch James who had to address the shoulder charge/ high tackle. I think 5 match ban may be light. There needs to be evidence that his working on this, special coaching etc. If he does it again he should be given a 6 month ban.

Whats everyone's bet on how long his ban will be? I'm putting my money on 4 weeks. 6 weeks is the minimum ban for mid level incident and they can reduce it down by up to 50% for being deeply remorseful and having a good record. There is no way they could reduce it max because he has literally been cited for the same thing before. I think it should be longer because he could have killed an 18 year old but its owen farrell and God forbid we hold him fully accountable for his actions

I like Farrell, he's an excellent player, tough as old boots and I love the way he gets under the skin of the opposition. This was a horror show though, I have no idea what he was thinking here. If the 9 hadn't dipped he'd still have got it in the jaw. Farrell has ridden his luck for a long time, hopefully this will make him look at tackling technique - he's going to have plenty of free time to practice.

He should be getting a long ban to the high end of the guidelines. But I don’t think he will because he’s the England captain especially with Bill at the head of world rugby. And he can’t exactly claim good previous behaviour.

A tackle like that, there are no words for it, you play rugby hard for sures, but legally, sad part of this is, everyone knows he will get off with a joke of a decision, most likely 4 to 6 weeks, anything less than 12 weeks, does not do justice to the great game we love, we need rugby players to watch, not cold blooded thugs

I pin the responsibility on McCall and Jones in that they have failed to correct a player who consistently tackles high and illegally.They have compounded the error by defending him at the enquiry.I want to know what they and Farrell are going to do to prevent this happening again.No info whatsoever is a gross failing of the authorities

That kid was introduced to Farrell at an England training session just before the World Cup when Atkinson was playing schoolboy rugby. A year later Farrell decides to try to ruin his career with a blindside full body hit to his head. It was intentional, designed to permanently damage the boy, and Owen should be ashamed of himself. The new laws were designed to protect players, Farrell has no respect for the laws or his fellow players. If Eddy had any balls he would make an example of him for the greater good of the game.

Rugby has been trying to get tackles lower for safety. Farrell chooses to play on the line of legality. If you do that, eventually you're going to go over the line.

If you watch it frame by frame from the moment the ball leaves Farrell's boot - ie in context - you can see that multiple factors were in play. It's high, it's a red, but the fact that both of them are flat out massively contributes to the impact, as does the body positions involved. It wasn't imo deliberate violent play, unlike say eye gouging. I'm not a Sarries fan, but if you want to pass judgement you have to be 100% objective. I just think using this incident as clickbait doesn't promote rational discussion.

It wasn't even a tackle. A tackle is an arm wrap below the shoulders, hold, and bring to ground.

Farrel intentionally drove his shoulder up, swing the shoulder arm and again absolutely no intent to use arms. 100% intent to cause harm. Farrel is the most dirty player. He should not be included in English Lions. And if he is... Someone please give him his own medicine.

Oh dear oh dear, it was a shocker, Owen plays right on the edge, which gives him the edge. He is captain of his country a fantastic player, top top player. Admittedly I'm a sarries supporter and followed his dad at Wigan, so maybe I am biased...... But I wouldn't change one aspect of my game, yes it was a shocker and thankfully the lad seem OK. But....... It is what it is, the game is cleaner and safer than it has ever been. These things do happen in rugby as I'm sure you are aware. Don't hate the player motherfuxxer, hate the motherfxxking game.

Goodie is correct, he did intend to smash him and quite possibly result in a turnover. I played both 7 & 8 back in the day. And one of my roles was to smash players which can result in a turnover. I was pretty good at doing this. But from my own experience, I wod start thinking about the hit & consequently the turnover before I should have. That loss of concentration would result in me either getting stepped or not making the tackle I wanted. I think Farrell got into this mindset so when it was clear that he would hit too high, he hadn't time to change it. He played the result of the tackle (the crowd roar etc) way too early and that loss of concentration traction could have seriously hurt that young man.

This was yet another terrible Owen Farrell assault on a player with complete disregard to the outcome on a fellow professional. As usual his reaction was to make sure he was not punished on pitch. He usually feigns injury to minimise referees reaction but this time he simply lies on the ground with the referee protecting him. He's utterly pathetic and I look forward to the day he comes up against a team who are not prepared to let him escape. Goodie and Jim get it spot on and if the disciplinary panel have any regard to the law and spirit of rugby he will get 10 weeks minimum...and then a "good" shoeing down the line which I'll pay god money to watch

Jim Hamilton has nailed this . It was awful ....no excuses or mitigation. Owen is a talented guy without doubt but has played on the edge for years and needs some basic coaching advice on how he reacts through a game . It is unthinking to tackle like this and my worry is that he will never remove this thuggery from his game . Big Jim was a tough player but always had the restraint of a decent person . Owen is out the box !!!

Goode is correct but the way attacked faz on Twitter was a disgrace. He will face the consequences and rightly so but this is the captain of our country and to throw him under the bus even more than he was already under it, was needless and it’s unfortunate that now Goode is in the media he takes every oppurtunity to throw someone under the bus.

The problem with this podcast vs the others is that you really just talk round in circles. You’re just discussing your own opinions and with only 2 people (and not exactly the most exciting personalities), it just makes for really mundane listening. The Owen tackle was absolutely atrocious, but you guys somehow managed to make a hot topic into a boring video. Shame.
