While never truly popularized, or even widely available in the United States, the 9.3x62mm is the most popular safari round on the African continent and is still widely used as a hunting cartridge throughout Europe. It recoils like a .300 Winchester but has ballistic reliability like a .358 Winchester and terminal performance like a .375 H&H. In this episode, Bill talks about what he likes most in a bolt action hunting rifle and shares some stories of his time out in the bush.

Ken Hackathorn has served as a US Army Special Forces Small Arms Instructor, Gunsite Instructor, and NRA Police Firearms Instructor. He is currently an FBI Certified Firearms Instructor, and an SRT member and Special Response Team trainer. The 9.3×62 reminds me of the 22-250, in that everyone who has used that cartridge loves them. They just flat out work. I've never heard anybody bad mouth these two great rounds.

Since being bequeathed my hunting mates Mauser action FN 9.3x62, I've grown to LOVE the calibre (my 30/06 is getting jealous!!). Everything these guys say about the 9.3x62 is true. It is a SUPERB calibre!! Period!! On my last trip, I dropped a cape buff with a single frontal quatering shot. The 286gr Woodleigh RNSP went in on the inside of the right shoulder, went through the top of the heart, and the projectile went on and was found just under the rear left rib!! Wonderful 40" straight line penetration - you couldn't ask for better performance!! 👍

Picked up a 9.3X64 Brenicke German guild gun a real 375 equal. Regards to Ken we were at Columbia Conference together in 1976 but lost touch. Spent 25 years with US Marshals had Jimmy Cirillo for firearms trainer in Basic.

I was lucky enough to pick up one of the Gunblast Ruger M77 a while back and fell in love with the 9.3. I then got a Mauser M12 in it as well and that is my go to rifle. Absolutely fantastic.

I've had my Ruger M77 30/06, that's still in factory condition, for 35yrs now. Taken everything from kudu and wildebeeste down (and a shark!) My daughter took her NT water buffalo with my dear old 30/06 too. NEVER had a jam, or any problem with it - and as of last week, STILL shoots sub-MOA at 200m!! Perfect!! 😊👍

I re barreled a model 70 crf into a 9.3 x 62, works perfectly with a good firber glass stock. Not an expensive project.

I also love the 77. I'm surprised they don't use stock bolts in the heavier calibers. I have one in .338 Win. On almost exactly the 600th shot the stock split like firewood. I sent it back to Ruger and it came back with a new stock with a stock bolt at the recoil lug. (no charge)

I, by chanse, met Col. Jeff Cooper on a shooting range in Norway back in the days. He had to shoot a required test to go moose hunting with a couple of norwegian guys. Cooper had a Rem 600 in 350remmag. I can remember the discussion because Cooper was "outgunned" by a 9.3x62 rifle one of the norwegians used.

I have been using the 9.3x62 since the early 2000's, great caliber for worldwide hunting. I have used it in the States, Europe and Africa. Mine is a left hand Zoli (old Husky) 1900, topped with a Meopta 3-9x, German #1 reticle. Most often the pill is a 286gr Partition pushed with 58gr of R903/RL-15. Terminal performance is super. As indicated by Bill, handier than my .375 H&H, and my go to rifle for Africa.

I’ve heard that when it came out the gun writers saw it as an excellent cartridge, then the magnum craze hit a few months later, burying the .358 in obscurity.

I went hunting in the Czech Republic in the 90s with a Ruger No. 1 with Mannlicher stock and 20" barrel and caliber 7x57mm. I shot a roe buck there at 180 m. 7x57 is a good hunting cartridge. I also had a pre-war Mauser in 7x57 (1937) and an FN Mauser in 9.3x62 caliber. Sako are good weapons too. Back then, I had a Sako 375 H&H converted to the 404 Jeffery caliber by a Nuremberg gunsmith. I am a German from Franconia and now live in Thailand.

I understand most Europeans only have about 2 or 3 rifles and they hunt everything with them. Usually a 6,5×55 Swedish or 7×57 Mauser for all deer, mouflon, Ibex, Chamois, sometimes even Moose. And a 9,3×62mm for driven boar, bear, bison, moose and of course dangerous game in Africa, the Big 5. Here in the States we want to have the latest new thing and have 1 gun it seems for every type of game and end up having like 10-15 rifled haha. There's nothing wrong with that I suppose I myself have 4 rifles. But a lot guys I meet have lots more. At least for me it's too expensive to have that many rifles and different types ammo etc

I think the 9.3x62 is the most balanced hunting cartridge out there. More rifles should be chambered in this caliber! I’m currently looking at the Sako 85 Carbonlight in the cartridge. It seems hard to top!

With 293 TUG bullet it is well known for efficient work onhuge Saltwater crocs and maneating Royal Bengal Tiger's , 300 Swift is perhaps one of best big game bullets for it besides Woodleihgh.

Compared to the 35 Whelen, the 9.3x62 case has about 7 or 8 % more powder capacity, and the .366 bore has about 5% more area than the .358 for the gases to push against. So in a strong action, the 9.3 can be loaded to 4000 ft lbs of ME. The 9.3 also has a faster twist to stabilize bullets to 300 or more grains.

Bill converted Dad to the 9.3, and Dad converted me. It did everything I asked if it in Africa, from a fine kudu down to a baboon. Such a great cartridge and that Ruger African shoots great

I got a 7 x57 that I bought in 1975, it's a Steyr Mannlicher Model M Professional. I have shot piles of deer and other games with it over 46 years that I had it. I just load 140 gr Nosler Partitions or 139 gr Hornady SP's over a dose of IMR-4350 in a Winchester Western Case. 6 x 42 mm Leupold Scope. I just redid the mounts Talley rings and bases detachable so I can also add a 2 moa Aimpoint. Of late that has been my sight of choice. I don't shoot far, most of our shots at deer come in at well under 100 yards, at or very close to dark. You can really see the game well with the 6 x 42mm and that is the reason I have it on the gun. No real issues, the only downside is finding an extra magazine for it has been petty much like looking for the gun Grabillo Pincept used to kill Arch Duke Ferdinand. I got other rifles like a Sako 6.5 x 55 that I hunt a lot with too.

You might want to try an LPVO illuminated scope sometime. They are mostly used for DMR type rifles but I think they would be great for all around hunting at shorter ranges. They come in 1x6 and 1x8 to 1-10X magnifications.

Put a cloth on the stock that is a little wet. Put a iron on low and heat that area it will raise the dents in the wood without hurting the stock. Will need to reseal

For around the farm 6.5x55. For stuff that needs a little more persuasion, right up to anything on earth, the 9.3x62 is the best gun there is, but if you want to use it at the very upper end, you need to be a real cool hand. And one of the coolest was Don Heath. Here he is seen protecting a photo safari, where they waited till the very last minute, as it turned out the animal fell on him and broke his arm. In his storied careers, Don shot thousand of buffalo and elephant (due to pandemics control operations). While that might be pushing the 9.3, Don felt that for elephant, and in his hands, the next step up would require him to move up to something that had some knock down power, not merely a laser like probe. And on Elephant that would require the 500 Jeffery.

Naughty, most Southen African coutries have a minimum legal requirement of .375 for dangerous . Great calibre which has repeatedly proven a reliable stopper for everything when used properly.

@@mdd1963 "Waivered in" ??? Before it was Tanzania, the country was Tanganyika. When game laws were formulated, the minimum was the 375 H&H, with the caveat being the 9.3x62 in the hands of an experienced man. Do you people know the history of the 9.3x62 ? It was released in 1905. It was used all over Africa. Many elephant and rhino were taken with the cartridge. Many elephant and buffalo are still taken with it. A waiver ???

I'm currently building a 31" 35 Whelen. Running Accuracy International 300WM mags = 6+1. 250gr Speer 2453 .422 BC @ 2,900fps MV with RL17.. It'll go neck to neck with the 9.3x62 at a fraction of the cost! 30-06 or .270 Brass works for converting + .358 bullets are way more plentiful/cheap! Need to save all the money I can, to afford a trip to Africa :) But I do mainly hunt with .308 gas guns or 300 HAM'R's. Thanks for sharing Bill & Ken.

The problem there is that the AR-10 platform is designed for short action cartridges. They'd have to design something different than the AR-10 that would be very custom and expensive. Not many long-action AR's have been built.

The 9,3x62, invented 1905 by Gunsmith Otto Bock, was intented for German Settlers as a cartridge that fits into the Mauser 98 system. The british express rifles or double rifles were to expensive. Today, with light leadfree bullets, you can create loads that have the speed and range for plains game and with the heavy once for buffalo or eland etc. If you need more speed and power the step up is the 9,3x64. The 64 equals the H&H but needs no Magnum rifle system. The only thing is that the brits "order" the absolutely stupid .375 minimum rule. I have a custom 9,3x62,based on a Steyr 1912 system made by a gunsmit here in germany. If I could have only one rifle, thats my joice. From fox to boar and red deer, ending up with moose an buffalo it performes flawless.

6mm ARC gas gun for medium sized game loaded with 100g Partition or 103g ELDX. For big game 308 loaded with 165g Partition or 175g Edge TLR is my go too .

Not a fan of the Ruger 77 but a huge fan of the 9,3x62. Would love to see Winchester chamber their Model 70 Alaskan in that caliber. The Sauer 100 is the best value out there right now but the 9,3's get snatched up as soon as they come in.

I shoot a Remington woods master model 742 in 30-06 185grain it works for me on deer and hog I was shooting corlock and hitting them through the lungs and heart and they would run away and I would have to find them and to let you know I found them all but I changed rounds to a federal premium and dropped them were they stood. What the heck I said but the federal worked better.

Created by Otto Bock, Berlin especially for German settlers in Africa. Produced by Paul Mauser in series for standard Mauder 98 systems nearly 1910 for general purpose for every African game. After WW I swifly the British administation created a new rule because of big game hunting rifle about 9,5 mm allowed only. This rule had pushed the famous .375 H&H and whipe out the very best german cartridge from market. I've shooten some rifles, all of them copies of the orign Mauser system, any other modern Straight pull closeures too. No Sir. Norbert Klups wrote, ,,the Mauser system is the best choice. Safe, precise, reliable in every harsh conditions. I own some Mauser rifle, others I don't need !

Well that's a great video and great choices for hunting rifles. However I have to take exception to Bills view of the 35 Whelen, which is 9.1x64 and by many accounts can be loaded up to have even more energy then the 9.3 but uses slightly lighter faster bullets. The real benefit of the Whelen is its versatility due to the thousands of bullets available for handloading in 356,357, & 358, where the 366 is a bit of an odd duck reducing choice down to a few dozen choices almost all of which are over 250 gn. I can see the benefit of the 9.3 in Africa due to it being legal for dangerous game in many European colonized countries where it is grandfatheed-in, that the American Whelen is not. The Whelen however is a better, flatter shooting long-range large plaines game rifle with the same amount of punch up close. Both can easily be loaded up to over 3700 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle.

(.3x62 is equal power wise to the 375 ruger. both are 30-06 length and power wise. the 0.3x62 uses a .366 bullet versus 375 in the ruger.

No, they‘re not equal power wise. The 9.3 doesn’t quite generate 5.000J while the .375 Ruger can go up to 6.500J.

According to all my books the 9.3 is not more than a .35 Whelen. None of my books show the 9.3 loading my favorite 225 grain bullet which will produce more energy than the 285.

Look up Woodleigh manual ,data for 320 grain there as heaviest .

My Ruger M77v in .220 Swift, loaded to shoot at 4160 fps can defeat most modern armor. But not very good for small game.

No they are not highly endagered at all,that is ara propaganda, they are rising in numbers in many africqn countries,,conteolling their number is a best way to prevent reducrion in the number aswell as giving them value and limiting the risk for maneaters and locals wiping them out .

Yeah, You really need to understand the economics of big game and wildlife in Africa before you comment on hunting. If these animals are not valued for hunting they will be poached illegally without any protection.
