Excerpt from The Ruined City Chapter One
“When I was your age, I thought this keep could hold back time itself, never mind the greenskins. Those ruined towers that fester in the rubble? They once speared the clouds. Now look at them; broken teeth in a bloodied mouth.
Once this city stood resolute against the sea of evil that rolled out of the mountains, the green waves breaking on our walls. But then we were betrayed, and that gate-once so indomitable-was raised before them, allowing their filth to swamp our streets and galleries. They gushed through in such numbers we were drowned…
…And when we cried out for help, none came.
Perhaps we were too proud of our city, perhaps we were too sure it would hold the evil at bay. Whatever the case, our neighbours delighted in our downfall, and they were only too keen to pick over the rubble once the greenskins left.
And so here I am, yet another crow come to peck at the corpse of this great city. As it was brought low, so too am I. For now I am but a carrion thief, feeding on the marrow.“
