Little Dalton ceased to be a parish in 1609 and by 1633 the church had been abandoned although the Carruthers of Holmains and others continued to use the burial ground until 1788. In Victorian times it was partly rebuilt as a romantic ruin and in 2003 it was consolidated and repairs were carried out. The village stood to the north and was abandoned with only some remnants of the old corn mill surviving on the Dalton Burn.
Dalton old and new parish churches stand in the village of that name and the Mouswald church and school sites lie to the west.
