POSITIONS : GK - Goalkeeper LB - Left Back LWB - Left Winger Back LCB - Left Central Back CB - Central Back RCB - Right Central Back RWB - Right Winger Back RB - Right Back LDM - Left Defensive Midfielder LM - Left Midfielder LAM - Left Attacking Midfielder LCM - Left Central Midfielder CDM - Central Defensive Midfielder CM - Central Midfielder CAM - Central Attacking Midfielder RDM - Right Defensive Midfielder RM - Right Midfielder RCM - Right Central Midfielder RAM - Right Attacking Midfielder LF - Left Forward LW - Left Winger CF - Center Forward ST - Striker RF - Right Forward RW - Right Winger Obviously, Not All Of These Positions Can Be Played At Once, As This Is To Many Players On The Pitch And Exceeds The 11 Player Limit. The Reason There Are More Than Just 11 Positions Is Because Different Players Prefer To Play In Different Areas On The Pitch FORMATIONS : This Is The Distribution Of Players Throughout The Attacking Zone, The Midfield Zone, And The Defensive Zone. For Example A 4-3-3 Formation. This Means That There Are 4 Defenders, 3 Midfielders, And 3 Attackers TACTICS : Tactics Is Basically How Your Team Is Going To Move The Ball Up The Field, For Example How Often To Pass Or Dribble, Who Marks Who, How Tightly To Cover Your Marked Player etc. ROLES : As Ninh Did Not Explain, Your Team MUST Have A Designated ; Captain Direct Free Kick Taker Indirect Free Kick Taker Corner Kick Taker Penalty Kick Taker Pls Like Took Me A Long Time:)

kidmanier wait one last thing. Offsides is actually called by the second to last defender. The goalkeeper technically is a "defender" since they still try to prevent a passage of play in the goal. Theres a good example of it in the 2010 world cup. It was mexico vs an african nation. Youll see what i mean, even the commentator was confused on the rule ;)
@rizzorizzo2311
@rizzorizzo2311 5 лет назад
Also, if you posses the ball past the last defender the ball essentially becomes the offside line, can’t pass it to a team mate whose in front of the ball but you can if they are level with the ball. And sometimes on Tuesday’s during the month of August if the starts are aligned properly then passing it to the attacking midfielder when he’s within two meters of the third to last defender is perfectly fine.

Some finer points - A player is only offside when the ball is being passed forward from a player behind him. If (say) a attacker gets to the goal line and pass the ball backwards to a player ahead of the last defender, neither player is offside. Also you can't be offside in your own half of the field. There is some leeway as far as handball goes - if the ball hits a players hand or arm and it would have hit another part of his body anyway (e.g. his hand/arm was in front of his chest) then ref will *usually* not give handball. If a player blocks a pass or shot with their hand/arm that would have kept going then it should be handball. There's two types of free kick - direct and indirect. Direct means that the ball can be hit directly at goal. Indirect means it has to touch another player (either team) before going in the goal. If an indirect free kick goes straight in without touching anyone it's disallowed and a goal kick is given to the other team. Usually direct free kicks are for fouls and handball. Indirect free kicks are for offside. Indirect free kicks are also given for the keeper handling a back pass in the area as opposed to a penalty for any other sort of foul play, but these are rare occurrences. Even rarer is the drop ball which "is designed to offer no advantage to either side, generally being awarded when play has been stopped due to reasons other than normal gameplay or misconduct.". For example if there a streaker or animal on the pitch. Usually one team agree to kick it straight back to the team which was last in possession. Which leads me to the 'gentlemans agreement' - you may see players kicking the ball out of play deliberately - most frequently when an injured player needs treatment. It is usual for the other team to return the ball back to them in the interests of fair play. There is no rule saying a team must put the ball out of play or that the other team return possession however it is EXTREMELY bad form to not return possession. There have been instances where teams have not returned possession and scored - this has led to the other team allowing a goal in return to even things up or even games being replayed. But as mentioned this is all a 'gentlemens agreement' and not enshrined in the rules of the game. Nevertheless it is part of the game. I mentioned the 'no backpass rule' for goalkeepers earlier - essentially a goalkeeper can only pick up a pass from his teammates if it has been passed to him by any other part of the body except the foot. And even then it has to be a DELIBERATE backpass. If the ball ricochets off his team-mates foot the goalie can pick it up. Also goalkeepers can only handle the ball inside the 18 yard area. Handing the ball outside the area (deliberately or otherwise) is almost always at least a yellow card. Often a straight red as it is usually a 'professtional foul'. And what is a 'professional foul'? - "a professional foul is a deliberate act of foul play intended to bring about an advantage for the perpetrator. Professional fouls are usually committed to prevent an opponent from scoring.". I.e. a deliberate foul on the player rather than a result of bad timing or technique. For example player through on goal and being fouled by the last defender will invariable be a red card offence whereas a player being knocked over in midfield will be a yellow card or just a free kick. Professional fouls can happen anywhere on the pitch depending on circumstances and the referee's interpretation of the situation. And speaking of interpretation at time of writing for the most part referees cannot rely on replays or other technology for taking another look at incidents. At the higher levels of the game there is technology for the refs to be informed when the ball has crossed the goal line between the posts. Also refs have earpieces and other gadgets so the linesmen and fourth official can inform the ref of an incident the ref did not see so the ref can take appropriate action. This is the ONLY time a ref can do this. Refs cannot (for example) take action based on video replays inside the stadium. Finally there is the concept of 'playing advantage' - if a foul has been committed but the advantage is still with the attacking team the ref can choose to let play continue until a natural stoppage (goal, ball out of play, another foul) occurs. I.e. if a player makes a pass and is fouled but it looks like the pass might lead to a goal then the ref will let play continue as it is to the advantage of the player being fouled. If the foul is worthy of a card, the ref can give that card once play has stopped. Refs can also give cards before the game, at half time and after the game. Also refs can give yellow or red cards to substitute not yet on the field of play.

+Jayfive276 There are lots and lots of finer points that could have been in this video, but I obviously think that the point of it is to be a simple indoctrination into the most basic of rules, and too much of the complexity would not be helpful to the uninitiated viewer... right?

Plus, referee actually CAN punish players for arguing with him with a yellow card. Usually he's not because it's understandable that players are often upset and emotional over his decisions, but if they're arguing too much - a card goes up their asses.

I've been watching your videos (five years after them being made) and I got jaw-dropped about some other kinds of football out there. Anyway, a good note to mention (if no one has mentioned it) - the 'imaginary line' for offside is marked by the 2nd last defender (2nd being the key term here). The last defender is, most of the time, the goalkeeper, but on rare occasions, he/she is not the last defender. So we're looking at the 1st and 2nd last defenders actually being two Backs, in which, the offside imaginary line is still being marked by the 2nd last defender.

I've not heard that, but if it's true - it's about time. The only reason why they took so long is because of a very corrupt Sepp Blatter. Most likely being paid by match-fixers for not allowing instant replays so that it's easier to rig a game.

Except in the U.P. where it's more Packers fans... always the contrarians, those Yoopers. ^_^ So I'm holding out for an MLS team because that's something that would be televised and I could catch a match without making a four-hour drive in and a four-hour drive home. There are some smaller teams like that closer to home I might check out some time once fun is allowed in the world again.

Hi Alex. I kinda mentioned in a minor substitle at 1:46 when talking about Draws, but I chose not to manually explain that in Knockout Games there's Extra Time and Penalty Shootouts, but there's no shootout if there's a 'golden goal' scored depending on the format of game etc. Remember, I have to keep this video short and easy for a beginner to understand. Since most matches are league matches - I felt that this would confuse a complete beginner and thus left it out. You seem to know what they are though, so no harm done :)

Yep, Australia and South Africa also call it 'soccer' as well as a few other countries. But generally when you say the word 'football' internationally, this generally refers to 'association football', not American Football or Aussie Rules Football (which is the next video). Nice to hear from you again Don!

@Scoinsoffaterocks 9 лет назад
An explanation for the weird terminology of football/soccer in NA and Australia. [TL;DR at the bottom] One of the leading theories is that in the past, games played on foot, as opposed to on horseback**, were called football (irregardless of whether you kicked the ball). A wide variety of non-standardized ball games were played on the streets but eventually two main codified versions of football arose in England, rugby football and association football. Because saying the full name was a mouthful, they were simply nicknamed rugger and assocer respectively (assocer eventually just became soccer). Soccer was common terminology throughout the entire English speaking world. It was only until the 1970s & 80s that the word fell out of favor in the UK because it was (mistakenly) assumed to be an Americanism (this coincided with the peak of the North American Soccer League). Not only that but Association Football completely overtook Rugby Football in terms of worldwide popularity and eventually it became THE football. Rugby Football simply became Rugby. In North America on the other hand, a unique code of Football arose more or less at the same time that the English ones came about (gridiron is not a direct descendant of either soccer or rugby but rather it originated from the same unorganized street footballs played at the time, most of whom had shared the same basic structure). Eventually it became THE football in its respective region and soccer was elevated from being a nickname to being the sport's official name in order to avoid confusion with gridiron. Australia also has their own Football code (not so sure about it's history but it probably parallels that of gridiron) so they too say soccer in order to avoid confusion. Not only that but Rugby is still called football in Australia so the word football is even more ambiguous there. New Zealand switched from soccer to football very recently, which is a pity considering that it was probably based off the false assumption that soccer is an Americanism. Many nations in Oceania call it soccer because of Australasian influence and Japan and Philippines call it soccer because of American influence. South Africa also calls it soccer and Ireland uses it in some contexts to avoid confusion with Gaelic Football. This post turned out longer than expected but that's basically the meat of it. It irritates me a lot when the whole soccer/football flame war pops up on the internet, mostly because it is nothing but misinformation and regional elitism. What I said in the first paragraph was the leading theory because it makes the most sense (why else would so many hand games be called football, also soccer could have easily been called kickball) but it isn't the only one. Another theory states that it's called football because that's the size of the ball, and if you think about it, all the hand-games called football do use the same oval shaped ball thing. TL;DR Many games are called football because they were played on foot (irregardless of whether you kick it or not). Soccer is a nickname that originated in England based off the sports official name and it's used mostly in countries with another popular code of football. ** Back in the day, only rich people played organized sports and it was almost exclusively on horseback. Therefore the word football most likely originated from them describing the 'plebs'.

Yeah, the US and Canada are the only countries who get bashed for saying it for some reason. Even some of my friends from other countries like Brazil and Spain call it soccer. You only get heat for saying soccer if you're from the U.S. A lot of rugby players call it soccer too since they consider rugby to be the "real" football I like "association football" the best. That's what I like to use lol
@OLGMC

I never saw someone from spain or brazil naming it soccer to be honest xd those may be the most die hard football countries in the world. indeed people are only saying usa and canada call it soccer, i think that thats because america has american football, or just football in the usa, for example in africa they may call it soccer but they dont really have football. For many europeans its weird that a game with a ball, player by the foot isnt call football, instead usa, canada names a game with an egg played by hand football... I couldnt care less really but I just call soccer football and football from america I call american football

You already addressed the nuances of the offside rule in your Offsides video, including the fact that it's actually based on the *second* to last defender, including the keeper, as infamously became important with Carlos Vela in the South Africa/Mexico World Cup game in 2010, but there are a few other topics that'd could make for an interesting "football rules you may not know" video. As one example, Indirect free kicks, especially ones in the box, seem to cause a lot a lot of confusion when they occur.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 4 года назад
In English parlance, the second to last opponent is known as 'the last defender', as we don't count the goalkeeper as a defender. This is technically still correct so long as the goalkeeper is still there.

Out of curiosity, have you considered tutorials of the various leagues and organizations, at least how they're competition is organized in these sports (professional and international play, etc.)? I'm actually interested in seeing how the competitive rules of each organized league or events in soccer. (points and standings systems, league rule differences maybe, and tournament plays, etc.)
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 9 лет назад
izumiryu Not really, as they're changing constantly and to do that with every sport is a lot of work. Nice idea though ...
@izumiryu
@izumiryu 9 лет назад
Ninh Ly it was a thought, especially curious about the differences with the European leagues, the MLS and FIFA's international play. Though from what I understand, FIFA governs the pro leagues too.
@jazzx251
@jazzx251 8 лет назад
+izumiryu Allow me! Every European country has its own soccer tournament - organised in a league structure. The winners of each league get put in a sort of club "World Cup" knockout tournament which results in one team being crowned "European Champions" - the greatest possible accolade that any club football team can achieve. ALL of the leagues use a points system to determine a winner - 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie, and 0 for losing. MLS also uses this structure - but adds on an American-style knockout playoff system to determine who's won the title in the post season. The winners of that go into the North American version of European Champions League - called CONCACAF Champions League, which models itself very much on the European version. Now structure: FIFA governs world football - but is in serious trouble due to terrible management and criminal scandals at the very top. Under its umbrella are all of the continental governors of football - UEFA (Europe) and CONCACAF (North America) being prime examples. While FIFA tends to manage the World Cup and global international tournaments - it is the continental governors of football that manage continental club tournaments - such as the European Champions League/CONCACAF Champions League. etc. They also handle international tournaments that occur solely in their continent - such as the "European Championship" which stars european countries, not club teams. Typically - within the continental governance - are the individual "football associations" for each country - they handle the day-to-day running of the leagues in their country - most of which have a special knockout "cup" tournament. [such as the "Football Association Cup" - more commonly knowns as the FA Cup] But the continental governors rule everything - it is possible for your winning football team to be kicked out of the European Champions League for things like fans singing racist/Nazi chants or picking on black players by making monkey noises ... the continental governors (UEFA in this example) are judge, jury and executioner. Other sanctions meted out by the continental governors of football involve fines and even docking of points in the tournament where the offence was committed. Individual country's Football Associations may also sanction teams in their leagues this way - including docking points for financial irregularities, or fielding more players than are allowed.
