Yes, I'm back. Sorry for the long sabbatical, I've been doing stuff on my other channel and also freelancing. Some points regarding this video: 1) Yes, the famous films 'Mad Monkey Kung Fu' and 'The Drunken Master' seems whimsical, but they're based on REAL martial arts! You can learn to fight like a monkey, or fighting whilst drunk ... that's a real thing! 2) As a Cantonese speaker, I know my Mandarin needs work - so please, knock off the pronunciation comments. 3) Because this is a martial arts video, you'll always get some supposed 'smart-ass' saying stuff like "anyone doing MMA would kill these guys". But do you know what would beat an MMA fighter ... any idiot holding a gun. It's all relative.

General comparison for people who still don’t get it after watching: Taolu = Figure skating or gymnastics, but a lot more badass. Sanda = MMA minus joint locks. Hope that’s somewhat correct!
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 3 года назад
Pretty much!
@user-kz7wj5fl9r
@user-kz7wj5fl9r 3 года назад
Not really, for your Sanda analysis. No knees or elbows are allowed in the World Sanda Championships or World Wushu Championships. No groundwork is allowed and clinch time is a maximum of two seconds (unless you’re in the process of throwing, which they’ll typically give you a little bit more time to work with, but nothing over 5 seconds). You get punches, kicks, and throws, but it’s more limited than MMA.

I was expecting you to make a Sanda video someday (regarding all the martial arts you've already covered on your channel), but doing a video on the entire Wushu sport (including Taolu)! Woah! I'm impressed! So you are starting to talk about sports based on judge based competion! Excellent! It's a first time for you and you've managed it well Can't wait seeing your future videos on Gymnastics, on figure skating, synchronized swiming, diving and so forth! Maybe since you've made half of this video on Taolu, you might consider making sometime in the future a video on Karate Kata and on Taekwondo Poomse, which are basically to both of these respective martial arts what Taolu is for Wushu? Anyway, just keep the good work!

Note that wushu in chinese means martial arts so is another way to say kung fu. Wushu as a sport started as a way to unify classical styles of chinese martial arts (long fist, mantis, pigua, fanzi ect.) Into one single sport. The forms of each respective style are either modify or preformed notably different to their original contrerparts to make them look more flashy and acrobatic. The forms were originally desinged to teach moves for figthing and exercice the body (that's why they tipically look more exagerated than they really are) but in the modern sport wushu way, is all gymnastics (witch Is ok but it dosent have too much to do with real fighting). That dosent mean that a wushu person cant use their Skills for training and figthing in other combat sports.

@bluehippofilms
@bluehippofilms 3 года назад
@@NinhLyUK: I don’t want to harp on this too much since it’s overall a great video and I’m canto too. But my correction is more towards the spelling, since obviously working around an accent is quite hard. There is an official/correct way to translate and spell mandarin in English with the pinyin system, so not sure how you ended up with weird google results. But run it through google translate, look back at any of the videos, or the rule book you mentioned, and you’ll see it spelled as changquan. The potato example is actually a perfect counter-example. Just because some people pronounce potato as potayto makes no difference, but potayto would never be the correct spelling. Changquan is one of the most popular forms of taolu so it’s good to get the spelling right. Also while I’ll on small corrections, I would add that most taolu forms do not actually have music. Taiji styles and group forms do, but all other taolu styles don’t (and as you saw there a quite a few). Changquan does have music at the Chinese tournament level, but it’s not part of the international standard or official IWUF rules.

With equipment (like the sword)... they would never let weapons be in school. The weapons which are equipment (like a ball and a hoop in gymnastics🤸‍♀️🤸‍♂️🤸) make this sport look dangerous, but they can’t be a real weapon/sword/spear right? And the team/group format is a nice format too And the sanda format kinda reminds me of my favourite fighting game of all time Dead or Alive (also one of my favourite games/game series of all time) And I like that there are ring outs Oooo that’s gotta hurt!

As a wushu practitioner and a referee I can assure you that these weapons are mostly made specifically for training and competitions. For example Dao (sabre or boardsword, i have seen both translations) is made from thin sheet metal so if you strike correctly it flexes and rattles. They still can be pretty dangerous I have seen some horrible injuries.

@@nikohamilto2934 oh ok, it just look like one wrong move and they have a serious injury, it’s good to know that it’s a thin sheet of metal that flexes and rattles, preventing minor injuries

The monkey staff only reminds me of 孫悟空 or sun wukong cause the one move where the stand on the staff is a classic. Also great Chinese pronunciations

Thanks! And yes, I believe the monkey staff was inspired by the legend of Sun Wukong.

Montante is basicly greatsword in Spanish medieval history, and Figueiredo is guy who wrote manual on how to use that big sword in many different scenarios....so my thought was that it would be neat to see competition on "kata" or technicue show off like they have in Wushu....kinda HEMA guy nerding out ;) :)

Basically similar to difference between kata and kumite of karate. But taolu is more artistic than kata. And there's the "enbukai" (literally "demonstration meet") of Aikido.

Wushu is a variation of Kung Fu or Tai chi. It is still Wushu and not defacto Kung Fu or Tai chi. It is rather like a style in it self. I have Practiced Yang-cheng Tai Chi for some 22 years now. It is athletical but much less gymnastical than Wushu. The fighting style is more like Mutai or kick boxing. Still both formats have a value.
