The great thing about this stage performance is, that even in songs that are clearly about one character like Tugger, the other cats have such distinct personalities and are not some random cats but have charming, distinct interactions and expressions of their character... it builds up to a wonderful picture of the entire group. I just love Jellylorums shocked face when Tugger gives the older ladies a kiss, or Demeters annoyed strike at him... all the little pieces fit neatly together... that's something the movie lacks

When i went to see it there was a lady in the audience who was dressed as him. During his song he came off stage and went to her seat, made her get up and he sat in her seat and kept motioning for her to go on stage!!! She was so happy after!!

cats is known as one of the most absurd musicals ever in the theatre community. it's creepy and confusing, but can also be quirky and fun. we all know this. but the movie took all of the creepy and confusing, and left out the quirky and fun. jason derulo didn't do it for me as rum tum tugger. mr. mistoffelees was the best part of the film by far. i had low expectations, but STILL. i came here to flush the cgi out of my brain.

It's interesting watching this scene after the film because I feel that in the film they tuned him down like he's still the guy who turns down women and acts like a womanizer/playboy, but here he is extremely sexual and extravagant. The energy from this version compared to the film is completely different.

One thing I noticed is that a few of the name songs seem to be about what the cats are like...AT HOME, the way their OWNERS see them. RTT probably gives his owner a RIGHT headache getting stuck in drawers, wanting in and out constantly, and refusing every food he's given but he'll eat that same food if he's given something else and harassing her (Idk why I imagine RTT's owner is a middle aged widow) while she's sewing but never wants to cuddle when she wants to. Misto probably isn't cuddly or super affectionate AT ALL and loves his family....at a distance. As he is described as shy and aloof in his song, as well as often hiding out on the roof. As well as a bit of a trickster. Meanwhile with the Jellicles we see his true self, still quiet, but has self confidence and even sometimes a flare for the dramatic. And in Mungo and Rumpel's song we see them being absolute chaos incarnate, but we see Rumpel being childish and even a cute kitten at times, while we get a hint that Mungo might have a darker side (being an agent of Macavity. I know Rumpel is usually included as well, but honestly it just makes Rumpel a more interesting character. I'm personally of the opinion that Macavity is the Twins' father, and that's why they are considered "Agents of Macavity" rather than them being evil) but if you listen to Macavity's song...the crimes he's ACTUALLY being accused of by name...aren't very serious if they are actual CRIMES at all, but we know Macavity is dangerous and is implied to have hurt Demeter, and DOES kidnap Old Deut! And we see him being violent and injuring other cats as well. This implies humans don't really know much about Macavity and his true nature. They would probably not see him as any more troublesome than RTT and probably LESS trouble than the twins!!

My favourite part is at 0:30 because if you watch Misto in the background he's meant to catch the ball Tugger kicks - but instead, it misses and goes right over his head and there's a very brief 'oh shit' moment

This is the real appeal of Cats - the lyrics are ridiculous but the performance is so energetic and fun that you end up not really caring.
