Hannah grew up mostly in southern Delaware and attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland for her undergraduate studies. She commissioned as an ensign in the navy and met her ship in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. While on sea duty and between deployments, Hannah became very involved in ultra endurance sports, including running and cycling. Happiest on technical single track mountain trails, she trained for the 2012 Badwater 135-mile ultra marathon while underway on the destroyer Hopper, based out of Pearl Harbor. She was one of the youngest runners in Badwater. Visit www.runsealegsrun.blogspot.com for more information.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I try to run daily for my depression , anxiety and self confidence purposes . You become addicted to the endorphins after a run . Highly advocate running.

I run 3 times a week and really notice when I don’t or can’t run. We all have a run’s and it’s a little hard to explain the joy and the trials that running provides.

You're a BEAST! Thank you for sharing a personal part of your life. In my personal battle with depression, I have found running to be extremely therapeutic. I will be running my first marathon in 10 days. I am actually running in honor of those affected by Depression and Suicide. I am also running in honor of those affected by Dementia and Alzheimers Disease. Two extremely sensitive topics that hit close to home. This run is not funded or an actual sponsored, public event. My wife and I routed the course which is actually 26.6 miles long. She and my 11 year old daughter are my designated volunteers who will assist me as I attempt to complete this run. I am not a runner and I am totally not prepared for this marathon. I know I will hit mental and physical walls during this run and I am praying by finding a way through or around these walls, my determination will reflect the fact that we all still have hope. Where there is a will, there is a way. Who knows? Maybe one day I'll be brave enough to train for and participate in the Badwater Run. For now, I will take it one step at a time. Thanks again for your inspirational story!

I spent 1.7 years fighting depression after a knee injury stopped my running and hiking and took me out of the communities I was in. It sucked so much. It took 4 separate PTs that I quit and found someone else till I quit the 4th and found new treatments docs were doing online and asked the last PT to teach me to do them on my own.. and it worked.. oh god, that day I woke up without knee pain.. and how I wrote in my journal all those dark thoughts the day before.. it was like standing with one foot at either sides of a chasm as I read what I wrote and contrasted it with how the morning felt. Keep trying, keep going, life is exactly like the badwater ultra.

I become depressed after my endurance events/ultras because I miss that endorphin after accomplishing an event surpassing the pain I endured.

Yes my first 100 I ended up on crutches. It’s not the first 80 miles, it’s the last 20 that seems like 100 miles. I have run with the best ultra runners and one of my friends who I ran with on my first 100 had climbed Mount Everest and is now participating in Badwater 135 this year 2022. The people you meet at these Ultras are Badass. I felt depressed once it was all over, feeling lost because I did not have any direction. So I signed up for more races that tested my limits. I’ve participated in the Ultra rucking world championships and now for the world championships in multi day ultramarathoners. This was all within 2 years of starting ultras. 26.2 to 50 to 100 in less than 1 year.

Awesome video! I had a bout of post accomplishment depression after my recent marathon. I had been training and eating right for so long that I did a complete 180 after it was over and got bummed out about it. Signing up for another race helped and I'm back in therapy (training) 😊👍🏻
