On October 31st 2000, a Boeing 747 was cleared for take-off at Taipei in the late evening. Singapore Airlines Flight 6 had actually taxied onto a runway that was not clear. The The Singapore Airlines plane then collided with construction equipment halfway down the runway, causing the plane to break apart killing 83 people. Why was Singapore Airlines Flight 6 on a runway that had such glaring obstructions?

Based on the vdo that i have just seen, i would say bot the taiwan airport authorities and the pilots onboard are to be blamed for this accident. Being a busy international airport and especially when taiwan is prone to typhoons every year, shouldnt there be more than sufficient lightings be installed to ensure good visibility during bad weather conditions ? Shouldnt there be clear indications and/or obstructions to stop planes from entering a closed runway ? Did the airport flight controller check the exact location of the plane before giving the all clear message to take off ? On the other hand, why did the pilots failed to realise that they were on the wrong runway for takeoff ?

From what I understand, it did not have the runway lights on (color coded white lights.) It had green center lights on, designating the runway as a Taxi way (color coded green lights.)... For as much as I know, three crashes like this one happened in aviation history : Western Air 2605 in 1979, Aeroflot flight 3352 in 1984 and SQ 006 in 2000.

If your neighbourhood road is having road works on a 50kph giant barriers as tall as cars are temporarily erected. Meanwhile a runway capable of taking a plane carrying hundreds travelling 300kph ---- nah they'll figure it out -- pilot error

They should have used both different letters and numbers to further differentiate the runways. Example: Use 23 L and 24 R instead of 23 R and 23 L.
@DanknDerpyGamer

Except if they are both heading ~230*, it makes sense to have them both designated 23L and 23R respective.

Dark fact: Singapore Airlines flight 006 crashed on Halloween, the same day Western Airlines flight 2605 also crashed in a runway incursion in 1979, only that crash was on landing rather than takeoff.

For you Armchairs. The old runway O5R was reported to ALL departing pilots as CLOSED. Even if it was open it would be far too short for a trans Pacific flight. It is the absolute responsibility of the Captain to select and positively locate the correct runway. This is done by positive identification of the aircraft navigational instruments. This did not happen due to appalling airmanship and professionalism. What idiot departs on a runway surface with GREEN centre line taxiway lighting? ?????

I was just going to comment what I’ve seen now multiple other commentators bring up and ask and thats the failure to install any such barrier, signs, or any other construction indicators at the start of the runway marking it and making it obvious to pilots that said runway is closed and inoperable ensuring pilots are always aware in the event of a possible miscommunication. It’s also appears thar ATC made no mention of runways 05 Right being closed so the pilots were completely unaware that construction was taking place. These easily preventable accidents just add that much more of a sting because you know it just shouldn’t have happened.

A simple risk management could have safe this mishap...etc...turn off the lights or change it's colour...parked the vehicles at a different hold up area....everyone involved to ensure this just take things for granted...sadly a group of passengers paid with their life...

No, the primary cause of this accident was not pilot error. The primary cause was heavy equipment being left on a runway that was not blocked and clearly marked as closed at the entry taxiway, or simply not leaving the equipment on the runway in the first place. Pilots don't make errors when they are prevented from making the error in the first place. So tired of these final reports always blaming the pilots for their inevitable human mistakes under duress such as navigating the dark taxiways in inclement weather when simple common-sense safety measures are not preemptively put in place by those making administrative decisions behind the comfort of their desk.
