You can also watch us on... 👀 ❤Odysee: odysee.com/@CallMeEzekiel 💚Rumble: rumble.com/CallMeEzekiel *💬Bonus Reading:* This is entirely my opinion… The Whites could have won the war in two possible ways. But first I want to cover how they could not have won: There is no way Kolchak could have won his front. The Siberian Whites were dealt a poor hand and they played it poorly. If Kolchak had perfect knowledge of the future, he could have taken a more defensive posture and waited to launch his offensive at the same time as Denikin. But Kolchak had no way of knowing that Denikin would be as successful as he was. Even with that knowledge, both Kolchak and Denikin attacked the Bolsheviks as soon as possible because time was on the Bolsheviks’ side. The other way they could not have won concerns Wrangel… his infamous criticism of the Moscow Directive probably wouldn’t have saved the White army. It’s important to remember that Wrangel and Denikin were rivals, so Wrangel had a vested interest in contradicting Denikin at every opportunity. We also get most of this information through Wrangel’s memoir in which Wrangel obviously tries to make himself look as good as possible and does not have Denikin’s perspective. Denikin had legitimate concerns that enforcing discipline could have split the White movement - which would have been catastrophic, stopping the march on Moscow before it began. So what are the two ways the Whites could have won? The first would be if the Moscow Directive had been carried out closer to Denikin’s original plan. If the 10,000-15,000 Whites hadn’t invaded Ukraine, they would have been in place to hold back Makhno’s Blacks and/or strengthen the northern offensive. This would have significantly increased the chances of taking Moscow. The other possible route to White victory does not involve a change in the White’s actions, but to the Bolsheviks’. If the Bolsheviks had stuck to their initial panic and abandoned Petrograd to Yudenich, then they could have easily lost the whole war. Yudenich was in a weak position with few men and reluctant allied support. Had he taken Petrograd, Yudenich would have suddenly gained access to a massive pool of new recruits, and such a massive success would have certainly led to far more Allied support. In fact, not only would the Allies have probably supplied him, but they’d have been better able to do so than Kolchak or Denikin. Located on the Baltic coast, Petrograd was way easier to supply by sea than Siberia or the Caucasus. Plus, the supplies would have landed right where they were needed in Petrograd, instead of hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of miles away from the front.

and what exactly would be Russia fate if the white won the Civil War. would russia be an democracy filled with Slavic populist who would oppress non Russian minorities far more then some communist government, will it be an monarch who will crack down anything progressive seeing it as a threat, will it be an military junta with an charismatic generals as the leader. if the white won the Civil War Russia literally face a second Civil War due to all of these

Interesting, I would like to push back on the final point just a hair. The whites would probably had to have made some concessions to independence movements. For example, the West Volunteer Army nearly got support from Finland -- at the behest of Mannerheim -- in their march on Petrograd. However, this support never materialized because like you said the nationalist elements of not just in Yudenich's army but also Kolchak's refused the notion of an independent Finland. Wrangle was unique in the fact that, granted he did have his back against the wall, did cooperate with independence movements, notable the Poles and to a lesser extent the Georgians and what was left of the Ukrainians. I think victory would have been more likely if the Whites had cooperated with some of these movements, but that leads into one of the main Issues of the Whites: Unity of Command. For a majority of the War, the Whites had no unified command or stated goal aside from defeat the Bolsheviks at all costs. They were an extremely diverse group, Harboring Republicans, Nationalists, Monarchists and some Socialists. It was only in the closing days of the war (1920 - 22) that any semblance of unity was showed, but this was in practice solely on separate fronts such as with Wrangel in the Crimea and Semyonov in Transbaikal and the wider Far East. Wrangel does mention in his book that he was contacted by Semyonov, who lead what remained of Kolchaks Siberian Army, who pledged fealty to him -- but at that stage in the war is was meaningless and Semyonov still more or less operated independently of Wrangel, who had his hands full. The best way to look at the 3 main fronts of the whites (the AFSR, the Western Volunteer army in the Baltic, and Kolchak) is that they were in effect 3 distinct uprisings that had little to no cooperation -- this left them open to being isolated and picked off one by one by the reds. If the whites had shown greater unity and willingness to come to the aid of their fellow generals they would have been in a much better position IMO. Wrangel mentions that after the fall of Tsaritsyn, he proposed linking up with Kolchak in a joint Maneuver, but Denikin shot him down in favor of The Moscow Directive.

I've read Wrangles Memoirs. He is widely regarded as one of the most competent White Generals. He had some strong words so to say about Denikins march on Moscow, he opted instead to link up with Kolchak along the Volga. when the front collapsed and the whites retreated to the Crimea, Wrangel was instated in command. they were able to hold for 8 months, during which Wrangel instituted very popular land reform. They even managed to counter attack, taking a region of the southern Ukraine and reaching the Dnieper. Wrangel still had hope during this time, He had gotten some aid from the French and was actively cooperating with the Poles (who were hot in the middle of the Polish Soviet war of 1921) and to a lesser extent the Georgians. But when the Poles were defeated and the Reds could concentrate their full power on Wrangel, he was eventually defeated, although he put up a very valiant fight -- having fortified the straights and land connections into the Crimea.

Also he send a Kosak raid wich was tactically successful but terrible for PR. They raped, pillaged, murdered and burned villages all around. He was hoping for a popular uprising against the reds, but no one would flock to his banner (not even many peasants and SRs who hated the Bolsheviks and would rise against them months later)

My top 3 recommendations in no particular order are: - Red Victory by W. Bruce Lincoln. This book as at its best when discussing what life was like during the war. It also does a great job covering important post-war events such as Antinov's Green Army and the Kronstadt Rebellion. - The Russian Civil War by Evan Mawdsley. This book gives the best military history of the war. - Always with Honor by Pytor Wrangel. This is Wrangel's memoir of the Russian Revolution and Civil War. It's how we know about the infamous argument over the Moscow Directive. Wrangel took over the White Army after Denikin resigned, and his time as Commander-in-chief is the subject of the latter half of the memoir. In spite of his awful strategic situation, Wrangel managed to conducted the end of the war and eventual evacuation of troops and refugees from Russia expertly - even winning a few stunning victories along the way.

It sounds like nonsense, and it is. For those who do not understand what kulakism is. At that time, there were three groups of peasants in the peasant environment: the poor, the middle peasants and the "kulaks". The middle peasants were not wealthy peasants like the Kulaks, but they were not poor either. The Kulaks were a group of well-to-do peasants. The most important thing is that they DIDN'T produce ANYTHING. They enriched themselves by usury, lending grain to the peasants (at interest). If the year was lean or the harvest was insufficient, the peasant could not pay off the representative of the kulaks. These representatives were the so-called "podkulachniki". In such a situation, they came to the debtor, beat him, then either took what they had (since the peasants mostly lived in large families, they could also take the debtor's daughter or wife to use them later as servants and so that the peasant did not inform the Cheka, that is, they took hostages.) and the peasant remained with nothing and was forced to work for kulak for free. Or they killed him (usually together with his family, so as not to leave witnesses). Besides, what is this nonsense about the lack of cavalry in the Red Army? The Red Army had cavalry from the very beginning, since its creation in February 1918. There weren't even that many mounted armies. Among them is the legendary first cavalry army under the command of the future Marshal Budyonny. I am writing through Google Translator, I apologize if there are any inaccuracies or errors in the text.

The red army didn’t have much cavalry and that was one reason they didn’t do as well as they did. Joseph stalin even said that the 1st cavalry army was the most important army of the civil war. Also they didn’t do well since they were also going through hostile territory against them.

@@jamessmilus321 The Kulaks deserved far worst for hoarding all the grain from the starving people during the famine that was caused by drought, those scumbags deliberately shot all of their livestock and set the grain on fire to prevent the Soviet government from collectivization. Stalin did right for deportation their petty bourgeois sorry asses to Siberia.

I do wish you presented the invasion of Ukraine with a bit more detail. Denikin was absolutely onboard with grabbing swathes of Ukraine, and he at best tacitly approved of the large scale atrocities committed there. It wasn't so much that thousands of soldiers were being tied up as it was that they were mauled and savaged so badly that they had to pull out, and how White atrocities convinced Makno to make common cause with the Reds, which obviously only benefitted the Reds in the end. What could have been if it wasn't for Trotsky though.
