Based on the play by K. Simonov
USA, 1946. The editor-in-chief of an influential newspaper, McPherson, commissions the talented journalist Harry Smith to write a critical book about Russia for a substantial fee. Smith's fiancee Jessie persuades him to take on this job for the sake of the family's future. Using the advance, Smith and Jesse buy a house, furnishings, a car in installments... The hero is trying to come up with something a compromise. However, McPherson tightens his demands: “there should be no middle ground in the Russian question.” Then Smith decides to write an honest book about the country he fell in love with. This turns into a drama for him: he loses his job, his property, his beloved woman leaves him... But Smith does not give up and continues to fight for the truth.

Good to watch for several reasons. The themes of honesty versus selfishness in public discourse, and the misuse of the power of money, are even more relevant today, the corruption having spread in and beyond the media into academia and 'science'; similarly with the continuing war-promoting and war-generating of the American military-industrial complexes. We can put aside any criticism of the film's lack of subtlety - it's purpose was to be direct, and for the average citizen - and with a little empathy in ourselves we can find it amusing to see the Soviet idea of what life there was like, and to watch the Russian passion come out through the Russian actors, quite inappropriately for the characteristics of the people of the USA at that time. I don't mean that in any derogatory way - they are all of their time and place and experience, and it is all part of making such a seriously-made film a valuable historical document. Thank you.

Thank goodness they don't dub films and you actually get to hear Russian. There are so many Russian films on youtube but unfortunately they are dubbed and completely unwatchable.

I really love your channel. If it's possible, not prohibited or barred by sanctions against Russia, could you set up a Patreon or 'Thanks' feature on your channel? As an international viewer, I want to support you financially. If more financial support can provide more subtitle, I'd be glad.

While the plot is rather simplistic and the dramaturgy feels executed in a broad-brush manner, there are quite a few good comedic effects (even though the laughing stuck in my throat as the subject is hardly a laughing matter, neither on the U.S./Truman nor on the SSSR/Stalin side) and there is lots of good camera work - though not the same league we are used to from top Soviet directors like Sergei Eisenstein or Andrei Tarkovsky. What surprised me most is that this film was already turned in 1947, well before the Second Red Scare got fully under way in 1949-51, and even before the notorious HUAC Hollywood inquiry that started in October 1947. Then again, with the experience of the First Red Scare (1918-20) in mind and hearing President Truman's March 1947 "loyalty review" executive order (not to mention Stalin's purges in the 1930ies), it probably wasn't _that_ hard to anticipate what might be coming. Still, getting the film out within months of this stuff becoming official U.S. government policy, and about two years before this hysteria in the U.S. got out widely of hand, to me feels eerily timely, almost visionary even from today's retrospect perspective. All the same, only 4/10 because while remarkable in some historical respects, it is not nuanced enough to be really captivating or thought-inspiring, (thankfully) not funny enough to be suitable as casual entertainment, and while decent cinematographic work, not a significant aesthetic innovation either.
