This was a very clean take on a disgusting piece of religious history. The way you managed to make this episode seem disconnected from the present day was masterful.

What? He calls the Khazar origin theory "tin foil hat" and "conspiracy theories."" That's not seriously addressing "difficult topics." Here's what he should say: "The theory that European Jews are decended from a mass conversion of Khazars is disputed by many scholars. I personally don't believe it. However, it hasn't been completely ruled out and there may be some truth to it. Many Jews are uncomfortable with the possibility because, if true, they feel it undermines their literal genetic connection to the ancient Israelites and thereby impacts the question "What is a Jew?" Other Jews aren't concerned because they feel that a Jew is something that transcends physical identity."

My Favorite study topic the Donmeh and the Sabbatean movement. Turkish politics indeed in the last century as you mention effected. The interesting question is after half of European Jews converted, what is the current following in these days. Many Royal families are rumoured to be with the sect.

Thank you for your hard work. This is a problem that needs to ne addressed on what it is. To understand why this movement gained popularity makes sense, especially after inquisition. It was hidden and created problems, specifically with the French revolution. The problem is coming to ahead now and our brothers and sisters of God must be brave and believe that good Americans will understand so we can get past the antisemitic insanity

I think the best translation of "antinomian" into modern English is "counter-cultural".
@NarnianLady
@NarnianLady Год назад
nope... un-lawful or, anti-law is the real meaning. (the concept is known in Christian theology as well.)
@SaraMastros
@SaraMastros Год назад
@@NarnianLady That is, indeed, how the word is used in Christian contexts, but that is not generally what it means in non-christian contexts. Νομος (nomos) means "law", but only by extension from its core meaning of "habitual practice", "social norm" or "cultural custom". To the best of my knowledge, the word αντινομία (antinomia) is first used in Euclidean logic meaning "contradiction", particularly in the context of what we now call "proof by contradiction". Over time, it began to be used to mean any belief or philosophy in direct contradiction to normative cultural beliefs, ie "counter-cultural". It's use in Christian theology stems from this use, but is not the only usage of the word.

We can learn from here the dangers of Blind Faith. People that are easily influenced will fall pray to concepts that are questionable at best and more likely are considered Kafira. We, unfortunately, see such trief beliefs espoused by some people even today. We can also learn from this that scholarship is not enough to declare one as Mashiach. The are other factors necessary to consider and most people don't.

At 6:25 you incorrectly state that Rav Shlomo Alkabetz was the father-in-law of the Ramak. He was his brother-in-law. Also, his teacher in halacha and Talmud was Rav Yosef Karo. It was after the Ramak married Rav Shlomo's sister that he began learning Kabalah from him.

The Frankisten used the saying of Chazal ״ אין בן דוד בא אלא בדור שכולו חייב או בדור שכולי זכאי״ If Zakai didn’t work let’s try כולו חייב. The Frankisten were known to have done terrible things on Yom Kippur, הוא ובנו בעלה מערה המאורסה ביום הכיפור. The Dönmeh had a special room where special orgies occurred in the dark to bring the soul of Moshiach which must come from a forbidden union.

@@HenryAbramsonPhD when the Frankisten forced a debate on the Jews after being ostracised completely .At the heels of this cherem was the venerated Rav of Lemberg ( Lviv) R’ Chaim Hakohen Rappaport. Who called for uprooting this movement. The debate was to prove that the Jews do actually need blood for their matzohs . Also against the Talmud as for them the bible and the Zohar were the only books Needed. As they entered one of the main guys to this sect of Frankisten said to the Rav ; חיים חיים דאס איז דאך דם תחת דם .

I know that The Doctor is keen to attributing the roots of the enlightenment to R’ Azaria min Hadomim the B’aal Meiros Enayim or to Spinoza R’ Aryeh Di Medena , and other Crypto Jews that tried to integrate back into Jewish life . Which formed the first scientific analysis of the Bible or the מבקרי התורה . Some even argue that the Ibn Ezra was the first ח״ו and the Bible critics found in his open and original approach to interpreting the Torah. Or Gersonides. I agree that in the intellectual level that is very true especially among the Galicianer Haskalah. In pamphlets from Zuns Shi”r and the like the creation of Wissenschaft des Judentums . But the assimilation aspect had its firs roots with the Frankist movement, as the group of some 50000 people the lowest and most ignorant of our people felt disenfranchised from the Elitist learned Jews . They just wanted out . With the constant fighting and endless cherems following the the Get me’Cleve and the terrible machlokes on R’ Yonasson Eineshutz even more felt to rebel against the old Kehilla elitist system, as they lost confidence in the old time structure.,were if you were learned or wealthy you were deemed righteous and if not you were a nobody. In places like Germany for many the answers was to assimilate with the local culture. In the east it was the chassidim that broke away from this old root and sought meaning outside the kehilla structure . So in my opinion it was the Frankists that where the first serious break from the old order. Although they did it radically and eventually baptised and were responsible for the burning of the Talmud. If not for Chassidim there would be no Ashkenazi Judaism alive today . They too were put in cherem but they bought the souls of the common folk . And revived and put a new spark into Judaism. Even the Litvaks needed a mussar movement to salvage the little bit that was possible.
