In archaic times, man saw the world as the intersection of two dimensions: the sacred and the profane. The sacred was the plane of forms, archetypes, and categories. The plane of the profane contained all the random accidents of life.
For archaic man, “an object or an act becomes real only insofar as it imitates or repeats an archetype. Thus, reality is acquired solely through repetition or participation; everything which lacks an exemplary model is ‘meaningless.’ i.e., it lacks reality” (Mircea Eliade, The Myth of the Eternal Return).
It was through the technique of repetition or imitation that a concrete, otherwise profane action became universal and thus sacred for primitive man. By identifying with a myth or an archetype, man participated in ultimate reality and entered the plane of the gods, of life everlasting. He strove to escape the transitory reality of individual life, full of random and meaningless particularities - and to connect with the universal patterns of human life. For archaic man, these patterns were best captured by myths and legends. Thus, he strove to participate in these universal patterns through aligning his own life to them as closely as he could manage.

I'm still amazed how a young man like you, 25 years, and a Bulgarian (I'm from Romania, like Eliade 😁), could aprehender so deep all of this philosophy and meanings. Nice job, Simeon! ❤️

Really nice video! I read Mircea Eliade's "Patterns in Comparative Religion" a year ago and it changed my life, he was truly a great author and academic.

Reading Eliade i was also interested in C. G. Jung's and Joseph Campbell's books. They all talk about archetypes and psyche, power of the Myth.

Just happened upon this video, please keep it up! I thought these ideas were presented in a well articulated manner, and perfectly in line with the area of studies I’ve been recently treading upon. Good job 👏

I saw the video on sacred space on the channel "Like Stories of Old" and haven't yet bought Eliade's book. I wanted to watch another video that expands upon this concept and how one might incorporate it to make modern life a little less profane. I think you did a nice job by bringing up the well-known phenomenon of "Flow" and repetitive ritual. Nice video!

Modern Life...modern is from 'mode' or fashion, so something that changes. The changes come into our lives from 'outside'; they are dictated disrupting our rhythm. If the disruption is challenging we lose our equilibrium succumbing to the stress...dis-ease is first, followed by misery, illness[physical or mental]or even death. Observing the Sacred allows us to jump out of the merry go round manipulated by the Madmen.

Does Buddha discuss this possible “hidden” plane of conscious exp our archaic ancestors may know more about than us? …Or, does this plane more relate to Jung’s collective unconscious? Thanks for the vid -subscriber

Your choice of visual for the profane at the beginning combined with the explanation of the profane is hugely interesting in the way that it is prototypically anti-black.

You are the second person to make that comment, but let me again say, there is no pro- or anti- any race or group of people in this and my other videos. In fact, in 5:47 I use images of a black tribe for an example of sacred ritual…

some of this misinterpretation is the result of the unsophisticatedness of the English language (in terms of comprehending unfamiliar non-western psychological practices that has obviously no sociocultural references from western perspective due to different geographical location separated by vast distances) and mistranslation due to unfamiliar and incompatible meaning of terminologies

I enjoy your videos my friend but this seems to me to be Platonic philosophy with it's own jargon. I think in a way Plato was confused. The ground or reality may be more than constantly changing physicality but it is certainly not symbols or language. No form is sacred, certainly no book is sacred. Our consciousness is almost certainly not individual the way we think it is. It may well be man's collective consciousness that reincarnates but the sacred while holding all of this must be way beyond even the collective consciousness of man. What even is archaic man? Once thought in the form of articulate speech had arisen would not man be what man is? It's nice to explore this stuff and indeed for me it is a vital form of meditation but I don't think any of these men who recorded Thier thoughts so that we may conversate with them should be regarded as more than friends who we are prepared to listen to with an open mind. 👃

Durkhiemian view is more functional. Without the phenomenon of the collective, the partition between the sacred and profane does not exist ! The greatest foundation is the PHENOMENON OF THE COLLECTIVE !
