Back in 1978, my older sister was a contestant on match game. The whole family went to the studio and watched. What a great experience to see the studio, gene and the whole panel. I still have the episode on VHS tape but have since had it digitized so we can check it out whenever we want. At one point when the camera pans across the audience you can still see all of us sitting there. What a great memory! One of the most surprising things for me was how small the studio was compared to what it looks like on TV. And the audience was pretty small as well. It was a very intimate setting and there was great back-and-forth between the panel and the audience during various breaks. Thank you Dave for posting this and bring back some memories

@@jdsundstrom Hey Dave, here is a little 70s tv bonus fun fact for you related to my experience back then….. A week after the episode aired on TV, I was in Hawaii on vacation with my dad. Exactly one week after the show aired in California, the same episode aired in Honolulu. I got to watch it again! LOL Later, I found out that most shows like this aired a week later in Hawaii because the film prints had to be flown there. These of course were the days before satellite communications like we have today. I just thought you might find that interesting

I remember coming home from high school every afternoon and tuning in Match Game. That was is the mid-1970s when the show was in its heyday. I loved watching Gene, Brett, Charles and Richard - they were truly the best! Now, as a senior citizen, I still watch Match Game on RU-vid and I still roar with laughter and I'm thankful that through the wonders of the Internet I'm still able to enjoy my all-time favorite game show. Match Game will forever be a classic! Gene, Brett, Charles and Richard are all gone now but their memory will always represent what the 70s were for me. That was a happy time! Rest in peace and I'll see you guys up in Heaven! Thank you for this nostalgic and fun video! Now I'm going to watch more Match Game videos!

Thank you! I'll tell you why I thanked you later! I have watched "Match Game" over and over on Buzzr...plus, I watch the "Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour" on Buzzr also! The way that Gene Rayburn would say, on the show, "Hey! I'm the boss here! You'll never be on this show again! I'm the boss! I can fire you!" Gene said quite a few things like this and I took him to be an egotistical man who was "struck" on himself. In the end of this video, you mentioned his 56 year-long marriage and that he was a wonderful father. THAT gave me a new perspective on how to view Gene Rayburn. THAT's what the "Thank you" was for. You painted a new, true image of Gene Rayburn for me! Thank you for this video and your other videos!!!

The Match Game brings back memories of watching it in the 1970s with my grandfather after school. Those were good times. Gene was the best game show host ever and it's sad they refused to let him host the 1990s version. I read he got very depressed and didn't find joy after that. Very sad. Gene Rayburn should be "The King Of TV Game Show Hosts." He was the absolute best! Nobody was better than him! My favorite memory(s) of Gene Rayburn would probably be those multiple times right after a TV Commercial that the TV cameras would immediately resume with filming in the Match Game Studio. So many times when the cameras went on the air, the audience would be laughing hilariously. Gene and the other panel members would see that the red light on the camera was on, and Gene (and a few other panel members) would say "Hello!" to America, trying so hard not to laugh like the audience. Gene & The Match Game panel did that, not once, but numerous times. I later learned that they'd film a whole lot of episodes of the Match Game on weekends, because Gene lived back east, but the Match Game was filmed in L.A. Now being a part-time TV & Movie Actor myself, I can understand why everybody was laughing so much during the commercial breaks, and why they had trouble stopping the laughing: When you film so many episodes, over one little weekend, you get tired, and you've gotta just let loose, and let it all out.

I love it that they could be wild and wicked with the remarks & humor…nearly every show, we comment on how ‘you can’t say that today’. I think Gene was every bit as funny as anyone else, and his vast array of knowledge and intelligence just blows me away. I love how he was so proud to be of Croatian descent, and could speak that language fluently whenever a contestant was on with the same ethnic heritage. The tone of the show changed with Richard Dawson’s departure, imo. My husband saw a taping of the NY Match Game, and at one point, ran into Johnny Olson and exchanged a few words. It's also left out that prior to 1990, there was a brief revival/mashup of the format with the Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour in 1983 (Match Game proper having been cancelled in 1982 vs. 1984), that flopped epically. You can see Gene wasn't as into it as he was the previous iteration when you watch it back now, and him and Jon Bauman who hosted the Hollywood Squares part of the show didn't really mesh well as co-hosts. Peter Marshall (the original host of Squares) was supposedly thought about in place of Jon and expected to get asked to do it for that matter, but Goodson from what I understand wanted him instead, so he got him. It's one of the all-time duds in TV history.

In the fall of 1973 I began seventh grade. When I got home from school I would make myself toast with butter and jelly and orange juice and sit down and watch THE MATCH GAME! The Match Game wasn't just popular, but for many many years it was the number one rated daytime show!! Everyone wanted to be on it. I am sorry Lucille Ball was never on it or Elizabeth Montgomery or Mary Tyler Moore, but I loved all the stars who made it funny. I still watch the same clips over and over on You Tube.

I wasn’t around to cash it in its original run, BUT I have found it here on youtube & I am trying to watch as many as I can. Wow, the stuff they got away with is mind blowing. Some of that may not fly on today’s tv. Gene was amazing. I love his interaction with Bret & Charles. The prettiest girl always sat on the bottom left- closest to Gene. The way he flirted was perfect. It was crystal clear he was flirting, yet not creepy. Great show!

He was as NICE a man as EVERYONE says he was. What a gentleman! Who says showbiz types are all NOTHING but puffed up egos? If so? Mr.Rayburn was definitely made from the mold that didn't get broken but was hung up high in a place of honor to show how ALL molds should be made!

What a wonderful tribute, sir. I effing love Match Game. My mom and I watch it almost every night. I love how it's so unprofessional (I'm saying that as a good thing, bc game shows now are way too scripted, plus no host would ever purposely fall or run laps around the whole studio), and everyone was having a great time and can take many jokes, unlike today's PC world. I call Gene, Richard, Brett and Charles the fab 4 of game shows. I can go on, bc there's so much to love.

You mention his love of marching bands and it sparked a memory I have of him hosting a televised contest of high school marching bands. I recall I found it incredible that a national host of his stature was doing that. It had to be some time in the early 80s and I think it was the Kentucky state finals, which involves several schools from various classes so it’s an all-day event. Match Game was staple viewing at my house and there he was, out in a press box in November hosting a show of high school kids for a TV audience that could not have exceeded 150,000. Absolutely amazing man, God bless him!! We are blessed to have been entertained by people like him.

Wonderful video. I was a regular watching the prime time version and anytime I could during the day when I was home from school. One vivid memory I still haven't forgot. I think at the end there was a special bonus round for the "big money". The match on this day for the money was "Aluminum blank". There were groans thinking this was too easy. I think the contestant chose Brett Sommers Klugman as his partner for this bonus round. The contestant had a big smile on his face as if he was counting his money. His answer? "Aluminum ... pots." Another grown from the audience but then a female voice (he identified it as his wife) shouted from the audience, "POTS????" Brett Sommers couldn't contain her laughter and neither could the audience. I know Gene had a quip about that but can't remember exactly what it was. I hope I have that correct since I haven't seen that in probably 30+ years.
