Matthew Broderick and David Aaron Baker perform as Harold Hill and Marcellus Washburn in one of the shorter, but fun songs from ABC's 2003 production of The Music Man.
I feel like he doesn't put as much feeling/emotion in it as much as preston. Like for examlpe, Preston's "PLOP!" was a lot more well...plop into it than Matt's. And at the beggining, when he goes "no spider ever-listen boy.." it's supposed to sound like he suddenly stops what he's saying about the web part as if to say "nevermind, listen boy" kinda thing. Matt just immediately said it. Preston: "no spider ever....listen boy," Matt: "no spider ever, listen boy" Big difference. Think about it.
He has a very boyish look and personality that I have always associated with Professor Hill but didn't see in Preston. It is really a breath of fresh air.
I thought that Robert Preston did a great job...It seems that preferences are based on who grew up with which version. I watched the Matthew Broderick one multiple times before seeing the Preston version and I definitely like this one better...Preston was indeed more charismatic, but personally I prefer the more nonchalant attitude that Broderick brought to the stage.
I love this song...best number in the show, I think, although "My White Knight" is lovely and the "Shipoopi" dances were always fun for the orchestra...
Ick, I don't like this at all compared to Preston's version. It seems woodenly performed by comparison. I think Preston's is a lot saucier with far more charm. Broderick is too baby-faced to seem nearly as convincing on the subject. At best this is a cute emulation.
