In the og story, mermaids, unlike humans, had no soul... but the little mermaid wins hers after her sacrifice for love and her spirit stays forever as a guardian of true love. It is said that HC Anderssen wrote this story, after knowing his lover was going to marry another woman... so this sad story speaks about the true love and sacrifice that means let go someone you love, for their happiness and I find it incredibly sad but beautiful at the same time.

It is SUCH a masterpiece ! The music, the animation, the dialogues... Everything flow so well and i can watch it every day and never get bored. That's the power of classic movies like these. I so wish someone would make a live action of this one with a very stylized approach (beautiful makeup, costumes, tails etc...). The original tale is so beautiful and when you know the story behind it you appreciate it even more

I watched this when I was 6. Back then my mum would borrow CDs from library and this version was one of least borrowed cartoons. I soon understood why. 😅 But today I think it is one of the best versions. Idk why. 😂

This was my first introduction to the Little Mermaid. Then when Disney version came out I wasn’t sure if I wanted to watch it if it was going to be sad like this one. Also I was a young girl at the time.

Sad story... Her mistake was not staying with the prince after the shipwreck. But in my mind she is my favorite mermaid: so innocent and willing to love a man with a full heart to the point of willing to sacrifice herself for the prince :(

I remember watching version of the little Mermaid Marina. There was another version, it was a tv series and this Mermaid was named Coral. She wore a necklace around her neck, so she can spend more time with the prince.

So one’s gonna talk about how all the mermaids are topless and it’s supposed to be a kids movie, really shows that Japan anime gets away with a LOT of stuff.😅

What was considered taboo now wasn't considered much like that back then. There are plenty of cultures that aren't deterred from some nudity even today. Whether breasts should be considered as inappropriate to reveal changes depending on place and time. It was also the 70s, so most art and movies, not just Japan, had more nudity. Watching this as a kid, it didn't really bother me at all and just made more sense that mermaids wouldn't need clothes.

The statue they showed from Denmark I think was in the nude too. Japan really does well trying to replicate art back then. Well, some things they can approach badly on.

Well mermaids in mythology didn't wear clothes and most medieval art and statues in general have nudity (and get this they had the nipples, dicks, vaginas and scrotums showing not covered), so a lot of modern ones that want to keep the nudity will cover the privates (in this case Marina has no clothes but she has her hair covering her breasts, which actually is surprising for Japan considering that Japan can be kinda sus with nudity, and especially sexual content in children's media (See, for example, Sailor Moon where Usagi is seen bathing nude in clear water where you can see most of her boobs, and it just feels kinda icky, or Naruto and Pokemon's weird sexualization of Naruto and Misty respectively (Naruto's ability to shapeshift into a nude girl, keep in mind he's also like in his early teens for most of the series, and the whole getting away with calling Jiraiya a PERVERT, and Misty being shown in a bikini in several episodes when she's like 10, and to a lesser extent James' bikini and fake boobs although he's an adult). So for Japan and "adult content in kids stuff" this is very tasteful and tame.

@@finland4ever55 Yeah, I heard about the Pokémon, I got a present from my dad’s Japanese friend, when I was in Japan, it was a Pokémon manga and a dragon ball manga, I didn’t open it until 5 months later or more, it says 13 an up, smoking, but didn’t says THERE WAS YOU KNOW WHAT stuff in there! Then I never want to read a manga again, is this what teens read!? I am 15 now, I was 12 when I read it.. Japan is quite interesting! Lol
