@@mouthofthesouth4267 Haha, we got a rescue a couple years back and it was non-stop fights for basically every hoof. (Some of the worst times, she pulled entire stretches of the fence she was tied to, about 100ft of metal corral fencing secure down rebar, anywhere from 5 to 10 ft out with her jumping/bucking/kicking/pulling) We are pretty sure that she was abused before we got her and her hooves especially were in absolutely horrible condition. About a year ago we finally had started making some real good progress and started a new technique where we didn't tie her and did a sort of dance with her whenever she started getting antsy. (An old school cowgirl had stopped by once and suggested it haha) I just came in today from doing them and the progress is remarkable. She still gets a little tired/annoyed if I'm holding them too long (we have had a lot of rain recently so I need a little time to dig everything out) but in general it is almost as if she is a different horse. She took longer to adjust than any other horse I've seen but as I'm sure you know, you just got to keep working with them and teaching them that you're there to help and eventually they come around haha. :)

I just bought a 3 1/2y/o TB gelding. He was never raced or put on the track and was kind of a rescue but the lady I bought him from didn't ride anything but gaited so she mostly did groundwork with him. He picked up all his feet perfectly for her and my uncle who went with me but he doesn't want to pick up his hind feet for me and it's on the side of him where I have to use my right shoulder which I broke a few months ago and I know he senses my nerves and I don't have the strength in my shoulder to pull on him like that. He picks up his front feet like a dream though, which was one of my favorite things when I bought him; I wouldn't need to do much groundwork with him. I'm ok with being on the back of a green horse because I trip over my own feet anyways but I don't want to get kicked. I have a yearling who kicks me when I pick up his back feet all the time but right now he's small enough that I can over power him and hold onto his leg but Carlos is 16hh and the biggest horse on our farm compared to our 14.3-14.5 QHs. Any advice??

I have a 7 month old weanling and I expected his front feet to be the issue as they usually are but he was fine with it. His back feet however his kicks out if I even touch a hind leg. I'm currently getting him used to having his legs touched with a glove on a stick but he isn't happy about the situation and is still kicking out at the pole :/. Think it will be a while before he will be able to have a foot trim

Hello sir and ty for the video. I have a horse unlike any other one I have owned that is twelve years old and STILL fights and evades every hoof. She will kick with the rear when you want the front and vice versa. I've desensitized each leg and she will even lift it when I tell her to but actually grabbing it is dangerous. She has a thrush infection on one of her front so I know she us guarding that one. However, NONE of the ways I have known to get her to submit are working. Suggestions?

I have always been successful getting my horses used to hoof cleaning BUT, I have an 11 year old mare that trusts everything I touch but as soon as I am near her back feet, there is kicking. There is nothing wrong with the areas-she's totally fine but, she just does not allow it. I wanted to ask you if you had any new desensitization tricks I could use to fool her into this. I do not want to have to use a rope and make it a negative experience for her.

@karleemckean4329

Have her tied to a post of some sort, take an extra lead rope, fold it in half, keep the two loose ends in your hand and put the connected end around her fetlock and just keep on pulling and putting pressure on her fetlock until she gives it to you, the slightest amount that she gives her foot to you, release the pressure and repeat until she is comfortable with it

My horse will spin his butt away from me and pull his hoof away., I don’t think I could hold his hoof when he does this, and even if I could, I’d be worried about an accident and injury to one of this when he tried to spin. Any advice? Oh - spinning his butt away is his typical action when he’s afraid of or doesn’t like what you’re trying to do beside him.
@hellenmoo8817
@hellenmoo8817 3 года назад
I would suggest leaning into him so that he is leaning against a wall/ fence and then gently try to pick it up and then if he picks it up without a fight or when he stops fighting, lean away. Pressure and release :) Good luck!

@spirit6938
@spirit6938 7 лет назад
Kian brunton I've used a method of is he starts leaning imeditly drop the foot and catch him or her offguard making him think twice about leaning. of course make sure you do this safely and be in a position to move back if needed.
@danverschild3295
@danverschild3295 7 лет назад
Horses naturally move to "pressure" and contact. If you don't give them anything to lean on, they generally won't lean. :-)
@jessilatiolais4894
@jessilatiolais4894 6 лет назад
My lazy boy does this. I don't know if it's because I am short or what but I can't get far enough away to keep him from leaning. I may try to catch him off guard to see if this helps. I will have to make sure I can jump out of there because he probably will come down or kick out to stop at last second.

I've made my own methods maybe other people have discovered them I'm sure but this was one of my methods that I just discovered cuz I work with a lot of untouched horses that weren't even halter broke when I got them that were completely crazy and would definitely hurt you so I did this before even seeing anyone else do it.

Hi, I don't know if you've already solved this or not but if you haven't then I would suggest maybe letting her spend a few minutes with the farrier before hand, let him pet her etc. Tie her up short with a ROPE halter and try to be there with her to let her know it's ok. My yearling TWH is similar. He hates picking his feet up even for me and tries to kick me (although he's gotten better.) It sounds like a respect problem but a good farrier should know how to handle a naughty horse because if they don't that's a red flag right there. If she's good, make sure to reward her AFTER you get done. Don't give treats beforehand as then it will become meaningless and can cause respect issues. Anyways, best of luck to you!

I don't ride horses (yet;) but I've always loved them (at the risk of sounding somewhat naive, I do believe there's, or there can be, this kind of special ancient magic bond/connection between a rider and their horse) and every now and again I toy with the idea of learning to ride, ideally own one, groom etc., however, I'm scared to death at the prospect of being kicked by a horse (I've seen this happen), I mean, even when I'm merely watching the guy holding the horse's hoof like that I'm like gee any second the horse is gonna crush the man's bones teeth what have u. Now, I'm aware that for professionals it may sound silly and exaggerated, nevertheless that's how I feel, lol:)
